You're a great help. I'm a beginner for sure. But once you know a little. You hear things from friends. My ac is constantly running. I now say, that isn't good and here's why......Thanks for sharing. I thought AC goes to infinity in my brain before too.

Yeah have to tell people all the time that it’s an on and off switch for unitary systems. Just cause you set it lower doesn’t make it blow any colder lol. When I encounter customer or clients like this I set the minimum and maximum set points for the thermostat if it has those features built into it. Nice video guys keep showing off hvac in sd and so cali style!

Im currently on my 2nd year of my apprenticeship out here in GA and watch alot of your content, do you think you could make a video of sort of a list of things you do first as far as when getting no cooling calls and or no heating calls? Troubleshooting type videos please

Just giving the occupants the benefit of doubt, maybe the setpoints weren't set so extreme to start with, But once the units froze they probably pushed the t-stats even lower because airflow was so bad. A lot of KWh wasted at SDG&E's exorbitant rates.

We changed the minimum set point to 68 to reduce the chance of this happening again. The place is a dog daycare and they keep it pretty cold year round. If you noticed at the beginning I was going to disconnect the orange wire and they had it wired straight to red. That unit is a 2021 so that means the heat likely hasn't been operational for 3 years and the staff had no idea. All the workers there are like 18-25 and literally have no clue anything going on with the building. It's a bit of a hot mess but we're slowly getting all their locations under control since getting their business. The thermostats have lockboxes but only one is still intact.

What are the rates? I'm curious what different states pay.

@@realSamAndrew There's a huge array of different schedules and pieces to the calculation, but in very round numbers I think you can count on $0.30 to $0.65 per kWh depending on season and time of day. Since these units were running round the clock maybe they were burning upwards of $30 per day each unit. Just a very rough estimate.

Ah yes, the brilliance of modern HVAC systems! Units perched on rooftops, exposed to extreme temps and weathering. And those +250 psi pressure lines 24/7? Sheer genius. Let's not forget the toxic refrigerants, and coils and drain lines that are a haven for mold and mildew and their ability to suck up tremendous amounts of electricity. Truly, a masterpiece of outdated, engineering design!
