Freezing temps are in the forecast, it's time to protect our tropical fruit trees! We're using two different methods today - heavy mulching and mini greenhouses. We're also experimenting with our banana's frost tolerance!
Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @GreeniesGarden!
We hope everyone has an AWESOME day!

Why are you not watering them? Studies have shown that dehydrated plants suffer MORE from freezes than the ones with proper watering. Besides, if your ground is wet, that makes it harder to freeze because the liquid provides a conductor for the 72 degrees the soil is at and the surface. People often put plastic bottles filled with water at the foot of their trees to make it harder to freeze in the protected space. Get yourself some Agro-Fabric. It will trap the heat coming from the ground and/or any heat sources you add and keep the temperature under the fabric 8 degrees above the temperature of the outside. Plastic is bad because it doesn't breathe.

We have learned a lot since uploading this video, and you're absolutely correct -- we've learned that watering the ground well before a frost helps our plants survive the winter better than a makeshift greenhouse! Thanks for sharing all these tips!

Have you considered moving to a place where you could grow all of those plants, without the hassle of protecting, or even watering them? South Florida is cheaper than the California desert....
@GreeniesGarden

When we visited South Florida this summer, that thought definitely crossed our mind. We do love a challenge though! :D

@Stephen_Strange

No doubt the Mango wasn't protected enough. Bubble wrap and hessian sack cloth along with that enclosure may have helped but it needs the extra warmth from something radiating. I have to bring mine indoors.

Hello! Cool videos! Can you make a video that directly addresses the mango trees? The care and how you address sub 40 degrees? I live in Bay Area zone 9a/b and would like to grow mango trees but everyone has advised me not to. I see y'all doing it so please share your strategies to ensure the mango survives (and thrives).
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 8 лет назад
When the temperatures drop later this fall, we'll definitely do some videos on winter protection again. We definitely encourage you to try growing anything that someone tells you that you can't grow in your zone! Remember that container growing is also an option that could be helpful if it gets really cold in your area. Keep watching and we'll get some frost protection videos up later this year! Have an awesome day! :D

They should grow well enough to survive year round but the thing is mangoes need a hot, dry weather season of at least 85 F or above to successfully flower and fruit.

Are you planing on leaving the plastic on all winter, even if you get some warm/hot days in winter? i just set mine up here in socal but our weather is weird we would have a cold day/night then randomly have a hot or warm day.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 8 лет назад
Our weather has been similar, we're hearing on the forecast that because of the hurricanes, it's going to be a warm winter. Fingers crossed! We're leaving the plastic up so we can wrap them quickly if need be, but are leaving the "doors" open so there's good air flow during the day. We'll update! :)

We covered the top as well to try to block any cold air from getting in. Then open it back up during the day after the temperatures have come back up above freezing so the tree doesn't cook inside! :D

We are in Arizona. It gets into the 20s for us every winter. It sounds like you have a good frost protection plan in place, let us know how they did! You might be able to just grow them as annuals every year if they can't handle the cold.

So far so good even the other night we had some flurries but they were bundled up. Keep updating in spring if they can really make it. You have a nice garden with those tropical fruits around it.

Where can we get mulch/dry leaves in Phoenix ?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 7 лет назад
Call any organic landscaper and ask if they could deliver a "clean" load of wood chips to your house! It saves them a trip to the landfill plus associated expenses. Or, ask your neighbors for their pine needles or leaves!
