@@criancrna1487 You still needs batteries in hydrogen EV, just way less. Also currently a good portion of hydrogen came from breaking down certain parts of oil. 1:15 interesting the DO NOT REFUEL AFTER 2036 11 on the fuel door. It's the car's throw away date. Honestly it's when the hydrogen tanks expire and need to be replaced. Hopefully they come down in price since all 3 tanks currently go for $25,000 USD to replace them (not counting labor) and they are custom built for the Mirai. We'll see in 14 years. @k1fizz Год назад
@@scottkolaya2110 The "do not refuel after" date doesn't mean the tanks are unusable. It's just a disclaimer since no one has seen what kind of wear and tear these tanks go through after 14 years. Also for comparison, I have not heard of a single FCEV owner having to get their tanks replaced, but I have heard many people needing battery replacements in their BEVs.
@scottkolaya2110
@scottkolaya2110 Год назад
@@k1fizz On the other hand, carbon fiber tanks have been out for not only more than 14 years, but many decades. The industry has long since seen the effects of deterioration of high pressure composite tanks. It's not like Toyota somehow came out in 2016 with some unproven technology and just threw it on the streets and let the public test it out for them. The US DOT and many other countries standard is 15 years. We'll see what happens when the first Mirai hits 15 years (the oldest one is only half that) but people have been replacing tanks in their CNG vehicles for a long time now because they can't re-register or insure them after the expiration date. Maybe someone will come up with a way to reliably re-certify composite tanks by then without damaging them further. It's certainly possible. And for comparison, of course you haven't heard of an owner replacing a FCEV tank because 100% of them are still under warranty. People tend to not complain when the company takes care of it. You certainly hear about every battery replacement that's out of warranty because people complain, rightly so, loudly. A few Mirais, Nexos, and Claritys have failed routine leak tests and were fixed under warranty. I'm not sure the tanks were the cause all the time, probably the myriad of pipes and connections. I hear about that all the time from owners. Many have had failed fuel cells replaced under warranty. Also for comparison, EVs outsell FCEVs by 500:1 worldwide. So proportionally, you'd need 500 battery replacements to equal 1 tank or fuel cell replacement. And the fact that there certainly have been some out of warranty battery replacements or refusals to replace them by burning them on a lake and other various stunts, is hard to compare against zero FCEVs even eligible for out of warranty repairs.

@Daktyl198
@Daktyl198 Год назад
Hydrogen is fairly new tech, that's mostly been specialized and not in any consumer vehicles before now. Producing anything gets better and cheaper with time and with the economy of scale. I still maintain that rather than Hydrogen, a Chevy Volt system using diesel instead of gas would be the perfect car until we perfect solid state batteries enough to put them into cars. A small, 35 Mi range battery for day to day operation that you can plug in to charge overnight (and regenerative breaking), and a diesel generator to charge it while driving for longer trips. More efficient by far than a gas engine on both emissions and fuel milage. It's literally the system that Diesel-Electric trains use for freight all around the world. They're the most efficient style of engines we have available to us.

I had a classic car that had been through 3 petrol engines in it's lifetime. Lack of maintenance from former owners plus just wear and tear. The fact it was on it's third engine didn't change the cars asthetic, availability or age - the things that make it 'desirable' and classic. The new engine I put in added nothing to (nor adversly affected) it's market value. Oh, it had also gad at least one fill up of fuel so the power source wasn't original either. Don't be scared of different fuel/eninges. Don't be scared of change. We will run out of oil one day - all those ICE cars won't become classics jusf because there is no fuel. We need change, we need cleaner air, we need to keep progressing or trying...

It is impossible for hydrogen to compete. Either you reformulate (I think that is the word) natural gas and have to pay the price of gas + the price of the energy used in the process + man hours to do so + energy to compress and liquify hydrogen + energy to transport it, which will obvious be much than what you pay for natural gas alone, or.... You will have to pay electricity to make the hydrolysis (a lot of electricity) + electricity to compress the hydrogen and liquify it + man hours to do it + energy to transport it which will always be much more than what you pay for electricity to directly charge you battery. So, unless the laws of physics are broken, hydrogen as a fuel for ordinary citizens won't be a thing, no matter what they tell you. It will work for very specific cases like the international trucking industry and that is it.

Just to fill up the tank hydro is a bit cheaper not much tho around 10-20€ but still diesel is around 20-30€ more but you get double or more the range so in the end its cheaper to run a diesel car but then again prob no taxes on the mirai 🤷‍♂️

For me, H2 is $18/kg that gets a Mirai 67 miles or $0.27/mi. Gasoline is $3.70/gal or roughly $0.12/mi. Electricity is $0.14/kWh that gets 4 miles, or $0.035/mile or 8 times less. I have solar, so charging doesn't cost anything.

First, I think the car is beautiful, the rims are amazing, about the hydrogen stuff... 0.11€/Km... It's more expensive than a modern ICE at 6L/100Km at 1.40€/L gas price (last price I filled my car) ~0.08€/Km And way more expensive than chaging a BEV at home - under 1cent/Km with some contracts that have very low prices at night like mine when I charge my PHEV Unless H2 prices comes down a lot (which it has the potential to if production ramps up and technology improves) I see little future for this tech... And with most auto manufacturers lack of interest in H2, even toyota launching their first BEV soon, I think H2 will die out soon - maybe it will be kept for bus and truck usage

@@thebrowns5337 It is not a question about the suitability of fossil fuels. It is a question about the thermal efficiency of the two systems.
