100% agree with you on the portable gas cans. Funny part is that they are designed prevent spilling of fuel but in reality they end up causing more spills than with one ones with no valve junk. As for fuel storage, I added a hand pump to my house heating oil tank and was one of the best things I did. If you are on automatic delivery you will never run out of fuel for your equipment.

I have seen people do crazy things to trucks to use off road fuel ..... moonshine tanks like u mentioned, having a switch between the truck tank and the transfer tank, with a set up like old box Chevy with twin tanks, even getting and old school gas tank that mounts behind the seat like in 60s and 70s . There are cheaters every where. As an electrician I saw a set up where the deceased home owner put a device sleeve in his mast head and tied extra wires in to get free electricity off the service before the meter....been that way since the house got a 200 amp service upgrade in 1979. It takes all kinds.

The problem with steel tanks failing usually can be traced to condensation build up inside the tank. Most of the cheaper tanks are bare on the inside and therefore rust from the inside out. And it's almost impossible to detect this until it begins to leak. However, if you want to prolong your tanks life, you can have an internal coating applied. If your handy, you can purchase the stuff and diy. It can be a bit pricey depending on the brand and supplier, but sometimes you can't put a price on peace of mind. Just a thought. Great videos.

Kind of off topic, but this video reminded me of some friends of mine who still had a fuel oil furnace, a few years ago. One holiday weekend they realized they had not gotten their normal monthly fill. Tank was nearly dry, they called and could've gotten an emergency fill, that night....for a fee. Well instead of paying the huge fee that I considered extortion from their supplier, I filled my 150 gallon transfer tank, just like the one you have and took care of them. The fuel guy stopped the following week, expecting an empty tank and a charge to relight the furnace. Ended up with a freezer full of homegrown beef out of that one. 😂 Really enjoy your videos and content, too.

I used to do a lot of gas station tank pulls, decommissions, whatever you want to call it. With the tanks that housed Gasoline, we used to have to vent one side with a 15 foot vertical vent pipe, and drop dry ice in the other end to vent out the fumes that were left over from the sludge in the bottom of the tank. You're right, they are never empty lol. It was a spectacle. Fire Marshall used to have to come out and throw a sniffer on the tank, and they couldn't be moved onto the semis until it was at a low enough level. Real cool part of that is we had a contract with a company who builds underground bunkers, and they used to take em from us, free of charge. Really helped out in the long run finance wise. Anyway Andrew thanks for the vid, I know it's 2 years old but I'm still trying to play catch up with all your content. Cheers!

I replaced all the spouts on my "old" fuel cans with them. They even sell a high flow version that will empty a 5 gallon can in about 45 seconds. I highly recommend for fueling larger tanks

Hello, I'd like to comment on your diesel discussion. I worked in the north both as a class one driver and working for a bulk oil fuel company (Gulf Oil), Stove oil is a lighter product than actual summer diesel and is commonly used in winter when the temperatures are well below zero. Summer diesel is thicker and lubricates much better for climates above zero. In the spring and fall when temperatures fluctuate from well below freezing to say 10 degrees above, we would add a quart of transmission fluid to each saddle tank when it got above zero and refuel at the end of the day with winter diesel (Stove oil). It should be the same in America as it is here in Canada. Ps: Really enjoy your videos and am amazed at how knowledgeable you seem to be.

Consider using the "back" of the tape when you're applying it to a pipe or fitting. It works the same way and it goes on easier when the diameter of the tape roll is considerably different than what you're applying it to. Give it a try, it actually works!

I'm an old cropduster using helicopters. Our mechanic improvised a neat way to pump fuel. He used a strong storage tank and put a tee in the vent pipe with a shut-off valve above the tee. In the side outlet of the tee he installed a schrader air valve (like a valve stem on a tire). To pump fuel, he would close the vent valve and use a small portable air-tank to add air pressure to the top of the fuel tank. He used a regular gas nozzle like you use to refuel his equipment or aircraft. It only took a few PSI to make the fuel flow. He did this on a cheap cylindrical tank, but an old propane tank would be better. Be sure and open the vent valve after pumping fuel.

Pump tube Fits inside any conventional fuel jug. it will empty a 5 gal can in less than 2 minutes. The pump part goes down into the tank and the diameter of the hose is about 1/2 in......I am 84 now and cannot lift a full 5 gal and fill my lawn tractor without spilling fuel all over the driveway. You will love it. You can thank me later. JoeB

I heard of a guy that uses his large dump truck. It has two large tanks. He disconnected the right tank sealed it off and carries dyed fuel for his machines. There are signs and labels on the tank stating that it is for equipment only. the left tank is fuel for the truck. Do you think this is legal since the tank is not connected to the truck's fuel system. It would be like carrying a fuel storage container with him. It saves time when on the job by pulling either one next to the other and transferring directly to the equipment.

If questioned you would have to prove that the tank is not hooked to the vehicles engine.

andrew as always i love your video`s. but you might want to revise your advice about diesel fumes not being explosive. (you were using a blow torch in close proximity of the fuel tank) in the right conditions i.e. high temperatures diesel can vapourize and become instantly flammable. BEWARE!

Agreed, the dolt who designed those new spill proof gas cans should be in prison. What a Gonkulator. I've heard of guys telling the DOT if they find red dye in their diesels that they added some kerosine (which is red ) to keep the fuel from Gelling in the winter time. Best to just pay the tax, the fines are crazy. I know they stop a lot of guys near farming communities and do testing. That guy with the false tank with road tax fuel and the main tank with red diesel was brilliant. I think your tool box goes with your truck. It's always best to look insolvent rather than mr. money bags otherwise it will be fines, fees, upcharges, gouging and goring a plenty.

kurt bees You can probably thank my lib-tard California for that. Law makers here are only good at making retarded useless laws that defy common sense. Thank you Andrew, fun to watch your videos. My dad is an old school Hungarian immigrant and we learned to fix everything, wish we were neighbors, currently one is a copy of Pamela Anderson and another is a guy who collects dress shoes. These people are about as useful as their fake boobs and protein shakes. My boys love your videos and like the reality. Thank you

Kurt bees - That's because the engineers are people that have never had to precariously hang from a sander fueling the engine at 3am in a blizzard with gloves on and hold a tank for 20 minutes while it agonizingly glugs through some device that takes 3 hands to operate. What ultimately happens is the operator removes the entire nozzle in a fit of rage and splashes and spills fuel all over the place trying to dump it in with no funnel. The answer is, make nozzles with a screw cap that is permanently and unbreakably attached to the nozzle and breakproof vent caps. We've sent men to the moon... this is not an insurmountable design challenge. I bet these "spill proof" spouts have spilled tenfold the amount that the "old fashioned" tanks ever did.

Its because of dumb fucks and lawyers. One of the oldest gas can manufactures got put out of business because of product liability insurance. Kinda pisses me off. Here's the article stateimpact.npr.org/oklahoma/2012/07/09/why-the-largest-maker-of-portable-gas-cans-is-going-out-of-business/

Your evolution of fuel carrying has evolved much the same as mine. First, 5-gallon containers finally going to a tidy tank in a truck box. The tidy tank has a couple of small clamps that go on the battery of whatever is being fueled. I use the yellow teflon tape on everything. Its rated for gas but is good for oil, fuel and water. Those auto-off nozzles usually work except when cold, then I will snap the trigger a few times with my fingers to make sure it shuts off when full. And with a fuel can, use a funnel. They have fuel cans now that say "the vent is back", so maybe they learned something. That fuel nozzle with the fuel meter looked really good.
