In today's episode of Office Hours with Coach Madden we talk about gaining weight for baseball. The question comes from Ryan and he wants to know how to gain weight for baseball. So to answer this question I share my experience with gaining weight for baseball when I was in high school and how I went from 185 lbs to 230 lbs and really developed my body. This is actually really nice to learn. I’m 6’3” but I’m only 175. I’m hoping to get up to around 215. It’s quite a bit of weight but this will surely help me! Thanks coach

This was perfect timing. My 14 year old just hit 6' and 130 lbs. Coach says time to gain some muscle. We're starting a bulk on Monday! At the same time his sister, also a baseball player, 12, will be attempting to cut a bit. Good times at my house. :)

Hey John, I love your videos they've helped me a lot especially with pitching. I used to not be able to pitch at all at 15 and now at almost 16 I'm striking out college kids and haven't give up an earned run in 21 innings. But do you have any tips or drills on lower body for hitting.

I'm subscribed and turned on the notifications. I struggle getting on plane with the ball, which results in me slicing the ball or poping them up a lot. Is there anything I could do to stop doing this.

How important is flexibility for a pitcher? I'm 17 and I stretch everyday but I am still the least flexible person I know.

It’s very important. Rly. Honestly just learn how to do the splits and work really hard on your hamstrings. Stride hard too when u pitch

What is the best pitches to throw from about a 3 o'clock angle and how can keep my arm the safest I can while throwing sidearm. Currently I'm throwing only a slider and a 4 seam fastball

Do I have to gain weight? Because I am a pretty skinny guy and one of the fastest in my team. My job is to get on base and steal the bases. If I get heavy I can't do my job, is it obligatory to gain weight?

itz Ricolicioso I you're fast and your only job is to get on base, I would join Track and Field, as you would get more opportunities for scholarships and such, rather than having a high on base percentage and steals.

Colin Kelly that doesn't make sense, have you seen Ichiro ?!?!?! Billy Hamilton ?!?!?Dee Gordon ?!?!Jarod Dyson ?!?! the list goes on and on of speedy baseball players just like Rico. I know that the only reason Jarod Dyson was drafted was because the royals had one of the last picks and they didn't know any of the players that were left, so they drafted Jarod because he was the fastest. You shouldn't base playing a sport on "scholarship" opportunities. Sports are supposed to be for fun, if Rico enjoys baseball, then why should he join track ?!?!?!?!?

itz Ricolicioso I would say no. But you should gain weight if you want to be a home run hitter. Don't listen to Colin Kelly, some players in baseball are speedy guys have you seen Ichiro ?!?! Just because you don't hit homeruns doesn't mean you have to play track 😂 you should play what you enjoy the most, Colin was saying you should play track because of more scholarship opportunities, but sports are supposed to be for fun ! Do what you enjoy, MLB is becoming more and more athletic, one of the Mariners goals this year was to create a more athletic outfield. Second baseman and centerfielders don't have to be jacked, but catchers, first baseman, third base and sometimes shortstop should be strong 💪🏻. But for you I would say, continue playing baseball and being a speedy/ base hit guy. Unless you want to be a power guy then add some muscle !!!

John Good video, but my question is the opposite and I think for an athlete is probably a bit more difficult. How do athletes lose weight? Between keeping themselves fueled for practice and workouts. I am assuming an athlete should be consuming anywhere from 2000 - 3000 calories a day based on their size. Love to see a video on how to lose weight. Tom

Coach im 14 125 lb 5,7" and im pitching 70 to 75 mph my goal for when I turn 15 is to be pitching 85 mph is this possible or should I aim lower

i agree with most things he says, however... you can gain muscle weight on a calorie deficit. You dont need fat to gain muscle. low calorie, dense foods are the key to gaining mass

Tbh it don’t matter how much you weight. Don’t matter if your like 120 or 130 or 140 or big it don’t matter. Just showed them your skills
