Hey ladies! I just wanted to drop by and thank you so much for this video. I am the most anti-diy person on the planet and with your instructions even I was able to pull this off! The results were exactly as I expected and I'm so happy with my new fireplace!

Hello Jacinta, I am in the middle of using this technique on my dark dated 70’s stone fireplace. How is yours wearing after three years? Is cleaning the soot easy? Or should I clear coat my finished fireplace?

Ohh man, this IS my favorite project you’ve done! Not that I don’t love the others, but it’s not only my style or rustic, while yes modern but comforting (if that makes sense?) but the impact for some short change really is huge! I’ve seen hgtv showing off the German’s technique of shmearing stone and even brick but, like most often, they refuse to reveal HOW! Thank you, there’s so many outdated homes with hideous old fashioned stoned or ugly bricked walls, fireplaces, etc. but I think this method would make even the ugliest 70’s stonework look like that heart warming effect that German Shmear gives!!! Thanks ladies, fantastic project and for barely an afternoon and a small cost compared to ripping stone out and starting over with new Sheetrock etc., etc., hell even compared to other builds, phenomenal results for so little work and cost!!! Btw, this white tile mortar you used, is it truly water proof or shall I ask weather/outdoors resistant or does an outside shmear require different mortar, concrete, cement? I’m planning on building, in my backyard, a playground/lounge area for my two spoiled Aussies and as much as I love wood I think perhaps parts of the build would be amazing with cheap brick or stone and then German Shmeared to fit my taste and hopefully🤞🏼 hyper, herding dog durable lmao 🤟🏼

I did one of my fireplaces in Lime wash, which was just as easy and super cheap (I think I paid under $20 to do two huge fireplace surrounds of old adobe brick. The question I have for you is, did this motar technique produce a surface that is more washable and less stainable than Lime? I love the Lime wash look and cost, but I feel that my hearth gets stained super easy and every time I use the fireplace, the smoke is dirtying up the exterior a bit. It's a large pit area and the fire can get super hot and big. I'm wondering what the feel and porasity of the German Smear is like?
@shanty2chic
@shanty2chic 5 лет назад
Michelle Guzman they are two completely different looks. German Schmear is a texture on top of brick/stone. Lime wash is more of a thin paint (white wash) look. I would assume either would stain over time but as far as styles go, it’s not a apples vs. apples.
@hismusicnme
@hismusicnme 5 лет назад
Shanty2Chic Thanks for your take 🙂. I don’t mind either texture, really. I just did the Lime wash vs Paint because a masonry friend told me my particular adobe would ultimately be a bit difficult to get paint to bond with.... so I Lime washed. I’m thinking Mortar would bond just fine, but if you’re thinking it might stain just as easily then, oh well 🤷‍♀️. Maybe I could just give it a quick wash and recoat after each season... in my spare time 😉

Love it!!! Question, if you know...I have a fireplace paint kit---which I know that someone else down the road of owners will not be able to adhere mortar for tile or granite. BUT, you used mortar to do this, so I'm thinking future owners (in my case) COULD mortar over the German Schmear. What does your experience tell you (I have zero experience) ALSO, I have brick. P.S. The fireplace paint kit has a base coat that blocks the brick, do it does not absorb the next few steps of paint.
@shanty2chic
@shanty2chic 5 лет назад
C Hubin this is a great technique for brick! It was quick and cheap so it was a great solution for me. If I ever want to change it, I’ll just have the stone removed and do something else!

Bill Camara mortar has a texture to it and you can make it more thick or thin as you desire. Paint will look like paint on stone. Schmear looks like mortar on stone and has varying thicknesses.

@@shanty2chic "LOL" all you want. You have absolutley NO idea what you're talking about. You literally used paint brushes to PAINT sloppy, white mortar over the stone! That's pretty much the text book definition of a white wash. A German schmear is ALL about "pointing" the existing joints with a mixture of Portland cement, lime, and sand...NOT MORTAR. You have to fill the joints until they're flush with the surface, then feather out from the joint to create the desired look. Some people choose to lighten the color of the cement by using a white sand in the mix, but many prefer the cement look. "Pointing" the joints also requires that you use a variety of different trowels to achieve the desired look, not paint brushes 🙄 So, you're very wrong..."LOL 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂."
