Check my channel for some EOS M 2.5K RAW videos. They are just tests, made in a hurry and shot hand held, but you get the idea, what this lovely little camera is capable to achieve. BTW, thanks for giving good instructions, how to set the camera for 2.5K recording. It's been asked from me countless times, but I never got time to make a video of it.

By default if you hold the shutter button halfway while in 2.5k recording mode, you'll get a low framerate full preview of what you're actually recording. No need for guesswork when framing your shots.

They're working on it. If you have a 6Dmk2 you should go volunteer for testing at least, if not for actually writing the code.

I think that you are right about the crop. I own two EOS-Ms, have Magic Lantern but never tried RAW. It does produce very good video without the need for RAW. I know that some people would think that quite heretical but I'm not sure that RAW is worth that much hassle. I own several adapters for vintage lenses for the EOS-M. I also have a focal reducer for M42 so I can use old Soviet glass like the Mir 1B and Helios 44 as if I were shooting full frame. That all said, the video is the best I've seen showing how to actually try RAW on the EOS-M.

Thank You! I haven't tried 2.5k or RAW on mine yet (ordered a new SD Card after watching this video.) but have had decent results using the 3X Movie Crop mode with both the Canon EF-M 22 f/2 stm and a 35mm F1.6 C-Mount lens, Cinestyle color profile, and shooting handheld with a powered gimbal. The C-Mount lens is a soft manual focus prime that has some pretty strong distortions at the edge of the frames but with the 3X crop you end up not capturing the most distorted parts anyway.

Great video, thanks! Had been able to put my hands on this camera but haven't tried the RAW function yet. Just a quick question - does 3,33x crop adds up to 1,6 crop of camera itself or it is 3,33x crop in full frame equivalent?

That’s a great question! I haven’t done any scientific tests on it. I can’t say for sure but I believe it’s 3.33x from full frame. Don’t quote me on that but that’s what I think.

How sharp is the footage compare to some of the newer canon aspc camera (70d, 80d, m5-6, m50). I looked at Vimeo footage you posted and it looked pretty sharp. I have always found the default eos-m footage super mushy.

It’s honestly surprisingly good. I think cropping in on the sensor is the key. Fewer pixels at a truer resolution. That said, I think if you used better glass (L-series with a speed booster) you’d get even better images. This little kit lens is good, but not incredible.

Making Movies, The “movie crop” mode in ML gives better results than standard video too. I have used a few lenses on the eos-m, and good glass does make a big difference. The nifty fifty on the m is pretty nice too, as a cheap lens that gives good results. New sub, looking forward to your future videos.

Magic Lantern is such a huge advantage Canon has over all the other companies.. All of them should actually open up their firmware to at least some kind of scripting. No reason not to, just put a disclaimer in that it will void your warranty.

I was going to congratulate you on your great video, especially your use of scripts. I have alway used the same 7/2018 release. So I followed YOUR link in YOUR COMMENTS and wound-up at MY release, with none of your scripts! >This is why I like to see IN the video the person going to the site.< In your audio you say nothing about from where to download. And, I thought it was odd you cut to a folder already on your desktop with a name that has "1080p" appended. There is no such folder at ML. Then down in the list of 629 comments, you reply to a person, "Did you download ML from the LINK IN MY BIO?" To which the obvious reply is "why would I since I'm not a mind reader!" (What BIO? WHERE IS IT?) I'm not going to ask why in your reply you simply didn't give the person the link in your reply! I'm not even going to ask why in these years you never fixed the link in your OWN comments. Very strange! UPDATE: I found one of the scrips. So it appears that "somebody" got hold of these scripts and put them on a "hidden" and "now missing" site.

There's a download link in the description that has the version you need. They pulled the 2.5k RAW hack from the more recent updates.

I have a question, is the 2.5k the only mode that crops, for example I see two other modes on the scripts menu called “mv1080p_12bit...”, do they use the full sensor or do they crop as well? Edit: Basically, can you shoot uncropped with this camera and still get some decent codecs? :)

Here's a montage of some of the videos I recorded in raw mode on a 50D while on a road trip: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nZj2a1DMkdQ.html I'm very glad that Magic Lantern exists! I bought a 50D, which doesn't crop when it shoots, but it shoots 1584x894 and upscales that to 1080. You can also shoot 2000x1080 in crop mode on it. The little camera in your video is about $50 more than a 50D, but it has advantages like recording to SD cards and recording audio. That's really cool. I'll have to look into it. Hello, I was wondering if the EOS M could shoot continuous at 1080p at a 4x3(1436 x 1080) aspect ratio? I am planning on shooting a short film this summer and want to get better quality video than what my Fuji xt1 can get. I have a Kowa 2x anamorphic that I plan on using so I'd like to shoot at 4x3 so that I get a 2.4 aspect ratio after the stretch. My main concern is that the EOS M has a limited record time at anything deeper than 10 bit at that ratio but I can not find specific information about it and I would like to know for curtain before pulling the trigger on buying one. When you enable sd card hack in ml, write speed reaches 79ish mb/s top on body. So with that fact 80+ mb/s write speed sd cards are okay.

SD-UHS.MO is not in my magic lantern menu... I can set everything else but not that and I cannot figure out how to get 2.5 k RAW on my EOS M by following your instructions because of the lack of this... I noticed you were opening up the 2018 July 3rd magic lantern but yours was different then mine at the end of the file name it said 1080p... are you using a special version I can’t seem to find? I would appreciate any help you could throw my way... thanks

The BMPCC is a much more capable camera. It’s better in literally every way. This is only interesting because of its price point. If you can afford the black magic, absolutely go that route.

Unfortunately this is the only model this works on. They changed chips after this and ML hasn’t cracked the newer ones yet.

@@garrettsammons Actually, they changed the firmware base. The M's after the original are based on Powershot firmware rather than EOS. CHDK which modifies Powershot firmware similar to Magic Lantern(they are actually the original hackers) has firmware for the M3 that does a lot of the same stuff as Magic Lantern. chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12542.490

I don’t know if you’ll see this but you REAAAAAAALLLY should try this with the original 6D. Full frame removes the crop and you can make a proper rig with that camera 👀

I did mention in the beginning of the video that this camera was basically dead upon arrival. The thing that makes this camera interesting is the 2.5k RAW video hack. I don’t recommend this camera as a photography camera.

I haven’t tested slower cards than the one I recommend, but Sandisk makes great cards so if there was a slower card it could work with, that might be it. Again, I’d recommend the fastest cards you can get, but it might be worth a try.

That usually means the card you’re using isn’t fast enough to record that level of data.

I don't know if magic lantern has updated its download but I cant find any crop in my modules and my scrips look nothing like in the video. Instead of saying things for 2.5k it has a calculater. I can get 14bit raw but have yet to find any thing that helps with the resolution it's self. Any help would be appreciated

I haven’t shot anything else with it yet. I’ve mainly been using it as an overhead camera (which is why I bought it). I think I’m going to play with the raw more over the holiday though.

I’d downscale to get killer 1080p. I don’t think it’s strong enough to upscale and hold its image well.

If I'm not mistaken, the M2 uses a newer Digic chip. If that's the case, this hack wouldn't work on that.

I don’t know the exact steps off the top of my head but a quick google search should land you in the right direction. I believe you load the firmware via EOS Utility but I haven’t done it on this camera so I don’t actually know.

2520x1080 isn't really "2,5k" its just a little wider than FHD (1920x1080) foorage. Well... it kinda is, but if we play that game you could call a (super wide) 10 000x1080 video 10K!?

After Full HD (1920x1080) was created, they stopped claiming resolution by vertical pixel count. Any resolution higher than Full HD is measured by it’s horizontal pixel count. This is why 4K is only approximately twice the horizontal pixels as 1080p.

Mate this is crazy! If I knew this was possible ealier, I should have bought this camera rather than buying a Canon Eos M50. I wanted to know if you think it's possible to shoot RAW on a Canon m50 or any other canon camera? Thank you.

The M50 won’t work because it has a new chip. There are a ton of canon cameras it supports, just check the magic lantern website.

aren't you sacrificing a lot of optical resolution given that you get 2K from such a small part of the sensor?

Nope! The reason it works, is the sensor is a much higher resolution than video needs. So, it’s 2.5k native, meaning it’s only using the center part of the frame it needs. It helps with processing power, but it creates a terrible crop in the process.

I do have external video recorders. Unfortunately, the HDMI out on the EOS-M is atrocious and wouldn't make for a clean HD signal.

Do you need high storage to install the ML update? I have an 8gb card as I only got it recently and the download doesn't work, my firmware is currently 2.0.3. - the latest.

You need to downgrade the firmware in your EOS-M as ML doesn’t work with that version of Canon Firmware. I go over that in the video.

very impressive! Need more subs! Question. how does the camera handle with over heating. I'm looking at this just for a bit of fun. maybe give myself a challenge and see if I can record a short film on a proper budget. I know other mirrorless cameras over heat and was wondering how it did with prolonged shooting.

Scipt name was ISO100. Is there any ISO limit for this function? And also, very important, what is your workflow for this RAW files. How to handle it, and isn't it horrible experience. Also what is the widest lens for this EOS-M system?

Great questions! The script auto sets your ISO to 100 but you can use whatever ISO level you’d like. I have found that 800 is the absolute highest I’d take it, as you start to get that digital noise that makes the footage less usable. My post workflow for the RAW files is an app for Mac called MLV App. I’m not sure if it’s also supported on PC or not but it’s a super light-weight, transcoding software that allows you to export MLV files into any format/codec you’d like. The EOS M has an APS-C sensor, so with the right adapter, you can put as wide a lens as you’d want to on it. I’m going to explore this a little more because the 3.33x crop is so serious!

Native lenses has the 22mm which is the equivalent of 35mm on a full frame. When the EOS-M went out of production, before the new ones came in, dealers panicked and I got two 22mm lenses from China for £50 each, new.

I haven’t played with the new iterations of ML for this camera, but as far as this build goes it cannot shoot in 60fps. They went for resolution of frame rates for some reason.

For a 2.5k raw, the image looked soft. Like it was 720p or something. (watched on vimeo, not on auto) on a 3440x1440p monitor. This video that is in 1080p, is 3x sharper than the 2.5 raw one.

You’re absolutely right! I thought it was probably due to the kit lens on it not being the best. That said, a lot of the negative reviews when this camera first came out stated that the images were soft. Could be a sensor issue. Hard to tell which is the culprit without testing it against known/clear glass though.

Mine doesn't work for some reason.. tried it 3 times step by step, for some reason it says resolution 0x0 0.0 MB/s (i have the extreme pro 95MB/s card so that should not be an issue since that's what you're using). Also tried the newer version of ml but that doesn't have all the modules. I think I'm going to Frankenstein a version with the lua modules from the one you provided

Not all RAW records in 12bit. And this sensor only is capable of handling just over 8bit. So the 10bit just gives you everything this sensor has to offer. RAW native cameras will give you more options for sure.
