Best tutorial hands down I've seen to date. Zeek's is more nuanced and has more detailed, but if one just wants to get on with a general solution's I'd recommend following yours step by step!

Hello, really well done. I am quite sad because I bought a really new nice eos M , but when I use standard HD1080 ML setting, I have horrible artifacts red and green where are cutting hedge of images. All other settings as anamorphic or 2k 3k 4k are fine but unisable for other reason. It is normal or it is only my problem. Thanks
Thank you. Can you explain "cutting hedge of images"? There can be artefacts in images the worst offenders can be fixed but some can't but there's ways around it.
@@Altcine Thanks for answer. With that term I wanted to explain that artifacts are visible on the edges of objects in the image, especially straight lines or chrome objects that are on cars, or tree branches. The images are unusable. This only happens at hd1080p. The only setting I use, you know why. My Canon eos m is really new with 0 shots counter at eos info. Thanks for help. Maybe you need to see a frame to really understand.
I would go as far to argue that 1080 with a high bit rate and better codec is better than any 4K with a lower dynamic range. Magic Lantern has really pushed these cameras to have access to features I never would have imagined, but they are honestly amazing. Keep up the amazing work!
I definitely agree with you! I used to be one of the "sharpness" but after looking at higher end cams I realised the sharpness isn't the main denominator for good image. Dynamic range and a clean, smooth image is a lot more pleasing. Thank you for watching and commenting 👌🏾
We all make mistakes at first but you'll get there. The m isn't perfect so make sure you spend time in learning how to work with magic lantern and you'll be happy to make the switch.
Yeah but I think magic lantern pushes 48mbps where are even my Olympus would push 100mbps and the higher the bit rate the higher the quality of the video
I was considering that camera but instead I got a cinematic Len’s for my mirrors camera, sure it only shots in 1080p but I will upgrade it in the future

You guys are running me in Circles… I bought an M2 thinking it would do 2.5K, then I bought an M because I found out M2 only shoots 1080p. Now You finally tell us you only shoot 1080p. Well now I got an A rig and a B rig. I got to start a Channel witch one Shoots better 1080p… M2 or M1 ??? 🤩🤩🤩
Hey do you mind linking the videos of reducing or eliminating aliasing and moire here or in the description. Cant seem to pinpoint those in your videos. I wanna keep using 1080p but man the ailiasing and that pinkblue moire is pretty brutal sometimes. Edit: oh you actually show it in this video. Jumped the gun!
Hey, yeah it's not 100% eliminated but just less of it. It's a bummer that it's there as I really like 1080 but that the limitations we have to deal with. I'm going to force myself into 2.8k and see if I can work with that insane crop in liveview 🤣

Good video and break down. Only portion I don't understand is why did you transform it to BM film instead of Arri? It would probably saved you some of the tinkering with the colors. I liked your tip about the glow I never use it but might incorporate it into my nodes now.
Thank you. Yes I agree with you and constantly learning new ways to make grading easier. I've also been spending more time with lighting and settings so I can use luts. Grading from scratch really slows me down so I'm embracing luts now and it's really helpful to avoid post production fatigue.
There are a couple resolutions which are very reliable but I've just found that 1080 is still king when it comes to reliability. I feel the perceived level of detail is not worth it for me as most of my stuff is planned for some sort of production and not random videos.
Blessings bro. Recording time is unlimited in certain modes (1080 or 5k anamorphic) but some modes are crippled by the lack of camera processing power.
Gosh, that's a good question...it's been a while since I've updated...last year. But unless you're having problems I'd always say go with the latest build.
great eos m video. I have to agree with all the points you mentioned. Btw. I love the shot from back of a car (great creative angle!) as well as your lighting is good!., Davinci resolve tutorial was very usefull! have to try this grading tool!

I discovered MC 2 weeks ago through you fantastic video - the look is really great. But than a strange thing occurred - ML crashed and after the crash I could restart ML but the crop disappeared, so I have fully image what I can see an the screen ( 1080, 16:9) Unfortunately it`s now impossible to reinstall ML because the firmware update icon disappeared. Do you know about this phenomenon?
I probably need a monitor or better laptop to see my grading. I tried to color grade with a file exported from mlv app to ndxhr into da vinci and tried to implement your settings but it looks weird. I'm new at grading so. Thanks a lot though!
Maybe try messing around a bit more. Once you've done the Blackmagic inputs you can change the outputs to arri and arri log c. It will be a bit flatter and may give you a better starting point. Also after the conversion you could try the arri lut on the next node. I think it's just trial and error but maybe the dnxhr responds differently to ProRes....maybe.
Thank you 😁 it's funny but I never use 2.5k....Ive always stuck to 1080 since I had a bad experience with 4k. I've now started playing with other modes as it's been requested and just shot some slo-mo stuff which I'm putting in a new video soon but im going to put some real effort into higher resolution modes over the next few weeks.
😅😅 it's not a problem, I've been doing this for years... recently used it on a project for SHOWstudio.com and it came out well. There are some drawbacks...like you can loose some dynamic range but nothing 99% of viewers will notice.
Need to review your entire video later…. Am seriously wondering if we’ll wait for the Magic Lantern Team to finish their software for the M6. Question- doesn’t the EOS M take a optional viewfinder? And is that viewfinder compatible with other cameras in the Canon M line-up?
It would be so good if it came to M6 or M50 but it looks like it all stopped 😞 Those viewfinders aren't compatible with the original m unfortunately. I remember this discussion on the group a long time ago.

That is a phantom 2, I made a video about it. The m build was very light and the drone can hover without dropping so there's no problems on short flights. Saying that...it's definitely not a replacement for a proper setup though.
@@Altcine absolutely 🙂 go pro for example can be used for underwater scenes and colour corrected after to Match the eos m and make an awesome sequence 🙂 I mean it's so universal that you can make a Hollywood style short film with just eos m and some cheap stuff 🙂 🙂

I'm having the hardest time, usually just end up avoiding that mode. You mention you have some tricks to make 1080p look good. Can you share? when should I search for? @@Altcine That's great! I'm also interested in how you get such a stable image without a gimbal. I feel like quality gimbals have gotten very cheap, but most EOS M users on youtube don't bother with them. So far my favorite shooting mode is 5k Anamorphic frtp, but is does take some post tweaking. Looking forward to your next vid!
I do use a gimbal sometimes or a heavy set-up. I also bought some cheap STM lenses with IS. Yeah that vid is coming real soon as I've just finished up a ton of work

Hey Kenneth, thank you for watching. I go over it very briefly in the coModo video but show an example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_jj5YcLTP-A.html I use a Tiffen pro mist to soften the image ever so slightly. You can use any softening filter really but better quality ones won't degrade your image. Nowadays I use c-mount lenses and because they're a little softer than kit lenses, sigma etc...I find the aliasing very minimal.

Hi Nik, welcome to the team 🙌🏾. After all the hype about M1 I decided to buy the cheapest model I could find to test so I got a brand new M1 air base model for £600 and it actually blew my mind. Yes it does struggle here and there if I get heavy in fusion but it was even faster than my Ryzen 7 3700x hackintosh. Rendering on mlv app which is now optimised for M1 has great performance. I've since sold the hackintosh and now edit solely on the air but I will be buying a Mac mini too. I'm just holding out for one with a new processor. I usually edit 4k footage on a 1080 timeline then switch to 4k. Yes tender times could be better but it's fast enough on this base model. Definitely get 16gb if you need to buy now 👌🏾

@@Altcine very kind of you - and i think i remembered why i previously deleted magic lantern as audio monitoring was my main motivation but i rediscovered i do not get an audio menu on my 700d like everyone shows on youtube i get choice of MLV sound on/off but none of the headphone monitor, gain, boost, headphone volume or other 10 x settings i see shown online :(
@@Altcine yeah i have an audio tab with one lone item on it "MLV SOUND on/off" - but see on ML comparison chart 700d does not have audio controls but neither does EOS M according to that - and yet I see a guy with a video showing his 700d with audio controls - im close to throwing the towel in !

Hey bro, nice to meet you 😁 yeah Davinci is all about what works best for you but there are some things that are crucial to learn like colour space, a colour managed timeline and the difference between primary & log wheels. Waqas Qazi is a bit sensational but his tutorials have helped me the most. Don't follow his "how to achieve a LOOK" videos...look at his beginner tutorials and amateur Vs pro. You may have to watch them more than once but it will stick if you actually put it to practice. Upscale to 4k is simply choosing 3840 X 2160 in mlv app settings. Tbh it won't make much difference in image but you'll get a better final render from resolve and an easier time mixing it with other 4k footage.
No probs brother, I thought I may have went a bit too fast but I just meant that I don't obsess over it. It's mainly just the core fixes, Alexa profile and then export. Just like it simple 😁
@@Altcine yeah but that's good there is nothing else to confuse other than the important things. I don't want to do anything extra on mlv app. I just want the alexa log, stripes etc to be fixed on mlv and then export the prores to my main editing software and do colors and tricks there. @@Altcine Yes, that's right. But, what I have found is that the biggest benefits of shooting raw is to save time in fixing white balance in a run and gun situation. It can save time and help capture the moment. Later, we can fiddle with white balance while in the relaxed environs of our edit desk!

Hi bro, greetings from London. I have mine set to neutral but because I convert to arri log c or CDNG it dosen't really matter which profile you use as those settings don't affect the final video. Just choose whichever one you like to use when capturing footage.

Hi thanks for the video! I have a question about shooting raw with EOS M. I assume playback of raw files is impossible, so what are your playback solutions? Record to an external device like a Atamos? Imo this problem would be the biggest issue. No way to confirm that you got focus, sound, or the best take right?

Hey, yes no crop in 1080. Best normal FD adapter I've used is k&f. It has a solid build & fits like a glove. Speedbooster is going to be Roxsen but the non branded ones actually look good too. I honestly believe the non-branded version IS the same as Roxsen.
@@Altcine Yes, i am using Danne's June 2021 build, which is the latest. As you said in one of your videos, I think the trick is to understand ML's Menus and see what works best.
Interesting to hear your thoughts and approaches and I wonder about options with sports cameras/go pros that are so good these days and with stabilisation that looks amazing - would those be also useful for mounting on cars or on body poles etc as so small and light or is there something about those that isnt so great for the types of uses you put that EOS M to?
It's a very good question. It mainly comes down to bitrates & data. The GoPro etc look fantastic in good light, you can get filters too but I really do like the creamy clean look I get from the canon Eos-M and I can manipulate the footage into anything I want. You can do a lot with a GoPro etc and I probably would use one but the eos-m is mainly about cost, versatility and bitrates. If I smashed one up I wouldn't mind at all 😁
@@Altcine awesome, appreciate the feedback and thoughts - I have my trusty budget canon 700d came ouot same time as EOS M so very similar in spec - I just installed magic lantern again - it still seems buggy with glitches on screen and i tried the raw video but it stopped after 5 frames and the footage looked jittery - is there a time limit on the RAW video like 5 seconds
@@johnleighdesigns no probs. Yeah I think ml isn't so great on some camera's. The eos-m is by far the most developed and always changing. I think after that comes the 5d2 & 5d3. I've never used a 700d but try to reduce the resolution just a little bit, change bitrate and if possible use 2.35:1 rather than 16:9. A little trial and error and you may be able to get something that will allow you to get at least a few mins.

@@johnleighdesigns it's so cheap now it's worth getting one. Some people are trying to overprice them so don't pay anymore than £110. You can get unlimited record time in quite a few modes on Eos-M so no problems there 👌🏾

@@Altcine Thanks again! I have a similar lens myself, but I switched to a "better" one a while ago. But with the sharper lens I got quite a lot of footage ruined because of aliasing and moire. Do you know any tips on how to fix it in post?
@@realad88 I see, yeah it's a nightmare! The only way is going to be masking (power windows) but that could be a headache depending on the scene. I'd suggest some sort of softening filter but get a high quality one, you want to retain the lens quality.
@@Altcine I will look into it. BTW, what would be a good "next step" camera in your opinion? BPCC4K? Or maybe the Olympus camera you recommended recently? I really like the look of EOS M footage but I need something more reliable.
@@realad88 It depends on what you want to do? The Olympus is only 8bit so providing you do EVERYTHING right when shooting you can get a very pleasing image but the p4k would probably be the natural successor though.
