Using the majority of your annual leave early in the year is an easy mistake to make, but it can really get to your wellbeing, especially as winter kicks in.
This way instead sidesteps by getting you your 47 days off across the entire year. It’s also worth mentioning by now that these are based on you working the usual 9-5, Monday to Friday. Most among us in this position will be legally entitled to 28 days of paid leave per year. Most importantly, you’ll want to check with your employer here that you get all of your bank holidays off before you book any of these dates off, to avoid disappointment!
April
In April 2023, Easter falls on April 7th (aka Good Friday) as well as April 10th. This means that you’ll want to book Off 3-5 April, as well as finally Thursday 6th of April. With these booked in, you should be able to enjoy 10 days off, all for only 4 days of holiday.
May
Early May bank holiday is the big bank holiday here. By strategically taking off Tuesday May 2nd along to Friday May 5th, you’ll grab a very tasty 9 days off of work, while only using a further 4 days of annual leave. So far, a grand total of 19 days off with only 8 days of leave.
More May and June
If you once again take four days off in total, 2 days off at the end of May over Tuesday May 30th and Wednesday May 31st, and 2 days off in June, namely June 1st and June 2nd, then you’ll grab another 9 days off, all for only another 4 days of annual leave. Grand total so far: 28 days off, only 12 days of annual leave.
August/September
This next set of days off is thanks to the 2023 August bank holiday. If you book off Tuesday August 29th, Wednesday the 30th, Thursday the 31st and finally Friday, September 1st, the you're now at 37 in total, with only 16 days of annual leave taken.
December
Okay, we’ll spoil the surprise. Needless to say, there are two bank holidays in December, which are Monday December 25th (Christmas Day) and Tuesday, December 26th (Boxing Day). This, of course, means that if you book off Wednesday, December 27th, Thursday, December 28th, and Friday, December 29th off, you’ll get a fab 10 days off, all for only 3 days of annual leave. 47 days off, for only 19 days of annual leave.
This means, we’ve still got another 9 days of holiday to use up, meaning you’ll even have plenty of time to get in some extra holidays or weekend breaks.
Remember, taking a holiday when often working is absolutely essential
With the effects of the pandemic, especially with many of us working from home, the lines between working and lifes have often become increasingly blurred. Especially when our home space is our workspace, we often forget that work should always come second to other aspects of our lives, including spending time with our family and friends, including of course our general wellbeing and our health.
Either way, there’s tons of time off to be picked up with not so much usage of your annual leave here, so make sure you pick up what you’re owed- many of us need a holiday!
Have you made use of any of these holiday/annual-leave hikes before? Know of any other ways to maximise your time spent away from work on holiday that we’ve not included here? Simply want to tell us where you’ve been on holiday and where you’d like to spend your time off? Weekends are not holiday. They are weekends. I still get the same amount of weekends, bank holidays and booked holidays no matter when I book them.

47 includes the weekends off. This is a bizarre massaging of the figures 🤷‍♂️

How does booking dates before/after Bank Holidays need a video? This isn't something new or rocket science, who doesn't already do this?! 😂

Quite. I mean even if you don't work your holidays this way (and as someone has pointed out, not everyone will be able to have the same time off work in a company so you simply may not be able to), you still get the same number of days off. Nobody is magicking up extra days out of thin air!

28 day minimum includes bank holidays right ? So there’s no 9 days remaining after this ..

Book every Friday off as that gives you 3 days holiday each time??? Dodgy maths, I think.

Some problems to be aware of: * Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave. * An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker’s statutory annual leave. * An employer may not let you take holidays at the same times as other co-workers.

Nice to see someone else who thinks like this 😂 I usually try and do this, but forget to check the dates of bank holidays, then end up chucking in my holidays at the last minute when I realise a bank holiday is coming 😂 so thanks for putting in the leg work for me and I've got them written down now this time 😁❤️👍

Logically yes, but those who already have bank holidays off had reduced allowances compared to those who don’t. I don’t get bank holidays off and I get 38 days annual leave for example. So while yeah you get that number of days off, you already paid for those days off.

That doesn't make sense to me. I get 23 days plus bank holidays, so I'm lucky compared to people who only get their legal entitlement.

I get 30 days + 11.5 days bank holidays (including privilege days) and no weekends and a day off for xmas shopping
