You are extremely thorough n detail tech that I could never be. I fix my own mowers Outboard motors Waverunners cars motorcycle scooters and anything motorized as a hobby.
Hi Bruce - Greetings from Idaho! I do not want to seem presumptuous. I have a Honda HRR216 and had a problem with surging, it would run with the choke on. I am a retired US Navy Machinist’s Mate, in civilian terms, a Marine Mechanic. I pulled the carb from my mower and cleaned it thoroughly (so I thought). Replaced the carb and the surging was not fixed!! This carb has an idle mix that would adjust only 1/4 turn. So I took a chance and removed the restriction so the idle mix could be removed for cleaning. I found a tiny blade of grass under the needle!! I also cleaned out the low speed jet with a bristle from a wire brush. Carb cleaner and compressed air were also used. For this to be effective the emulsion tube was removed. When the carb was reinstalled this time, all the run problems were gone. It starts on one pull and idles, the surging is gone. I offer this lengthy explanation for your perusal and possible use. I really like your videos and have learned much. Best Regards😀!
Entertaining and informative as usual. Thanks Bruce. I love the dedication, both to looking after the little things while you are doing your repairs and to your creation of your videos to help out people like me. Keep up the great work.
I really like watching your videos. I bought an HRA214 PX mower in the spring of 1988 and am still using it regularly. I have done all my own maintenance. I even put new tires on the rear wheels this spring.
Man, she is a smoker though eh!!!! After working it HARD to pick up all the leaves I am interested to see if it will smoke a bit less. It did sit for 2 or 3 years. I put it away till next spring.
@@BrucesShopSee if you can rig up an umbrella seals on the valves and see if it helps with the smoky start ups, you might get by with rings ( cheap ) and just a honing.
Bruce: Another interesting video. It looks like we have the same " Senior moments " when working on things. You said that you were a electronic tech, l was a X-Ray service engineer for about 30 years and see the same attention to details that l have developed over a career, watching X-Ray tech's and doctors tear up what takes hours to fix. Good job! P.S. A lot of horizontal cylinder engines smoke on start up because the oil laying in cylinder seeps around the rings. When assembling a new engine you try to stagger the rings so that there is not a ring gap at the bottom of the cylinder. As the engine ages the rings walk around the piston and some times the ring gaps wind up at the bottom. Watch starting a radial aircraft engine they usually smoke for a few seconds on start up. Tom from WY
I've run three of these commercially and that particular Honda engine suffers with start up smoke, sometimes really bad but always clears and probably valve guides. All that said they will go on running as long as you feed them oil. As a mower they are fantastic machines with good wet cutting abilities which is why commercially used.
Hi, Bruce i got a mountfield mower last year second hand the previous owner said it wouldn't start until 12 they'd of the cord ! He only used it 3 times! And purchased a new mower ! So I paid him £100.00 and striped it down cleaned everything replaced filter, gaskets changed the oil gushed the ohv , only for the choke spring to be at fault..! And now it runs sweet and on the first pull of the cord my partner said I should have been a mechanic ! Keep up the good work and just a thought you should get a camera tripod saves switching the camera about .
Hi Bruce. I know a guy that had this same type mower , the drive gears in the back wheels were all gunked up and he wanted me to fix it , so I did , aaaanyway his smoked really bad and he said its been doing that for 10 years or more. It didn't bother him he just had to keep an eye on the oil is all. Good mowers
It is just alcohol. We call it methyl hydrate the U.S. folks call it denatured alcohol. It just absorbs any water and allows it to burn when the carb is used right away after cleaning.
Good fix Bruce, pretty easy fixes and nice you had a good coil in the parts bin. That's a lot of smoke but I see where you said that's common with these. A shame it will ward off some buyers as it is so much better than any new mower they likely could get today.
really enjoyed the vids bruce I got the same mower starts but then dies so strip down starts as soon as my carb cleaner arrives ,il b harking back to your vids no dought lol
On a serious note Bruce , thanks for all the info you give on all the diff stuff you do . That goes also for many others out there like taryl , mustie , an many others . Im sure yall have save folks a few bucks here an there an i know for damn sure i appreciate it . So anyways just a thanks .
I don't know if anyone else caught it, but did you re attach the governor spring?? At 19:30 its just swinging around loose. An old GXV120 engine?? They were certainly old smokers, but given some love, it will still be running in a decade. Love seeing the old Honda's coming back to life. On Gumtree, that would bring AUD $200 - $250 every day, and they are hard to find down here, especially in reasonable condition. Cheers, Mike.
Right. First i went outside to check Yes it is on LOL.. Go to 39:50 and you will "Just" see it connects going to the back direction. Remember i don't have the camera on all the time. Sometimes i just need a moment to think without it on. Good eye sir. Thanks Things like that keep me honest.
Hey Bruce what u got cooking? Honda carburetor with Methyl hydrate on top😆 Yah those older Honda carbs are cool. Yah I have lost and found stuff like that before
thx bruce stripped her down this afternoon cleaned the carb to death and guess what shes now up and runnin great shes over 20 yrs old but wot a great mower
Iam glad that I found you're videos gave me the convince to fix my mowers and helping other people with there mowers and now weed eaters keep up the good work up there Big Thanks
Hi Bruce, thanks for another great video repair. Just curious, could the cylinder be scored or the rings worn? I though I heard you mention in Part 1 that the oil was ok but low. Thanks again!
Well these are famous for smoking. I think it is valve seals or rings. i want to start it up again after working it hard to see if it has improved as it sat for years before i got it.
Here is a Canadian Amazon site www.amazon.ca/Carburetor-Adjustment-Adjusting-Screwdriver-Protective/dp/B07HP32X8S/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1EKJVZ4Z6KD61&keywords=hipa+screw+drivers&qid=1653937201&sprefix=hipa+screw+drivers%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-7
Love the video! I have one of those old Hondas that I found on the curb on my channel somewhere. It's an HRR 214 if memory serves. All it needed was the coil gapped and she fired right up. I love it!!! I need to free up the throttle cable though as it has seized from sitting outside over the summer while I moved. That's wild on your mower there, Bruce. I wonder what the condition of the combustion chamber is? Regardless, it runs. Great save!! Thanks for the video! -Nick.
Are you shutting the gas lever off when you are done running it ..I did not see you take the gas lever out and the rubber piece with the 4 holes..Same type carb as my Honda 8 hp and my 11 hp Greyhound engine
That (0000) Steel Wool is good for cleaning the grime off the windshields, looking through the window will have the appearance of being new, but do NOT use on the side mirrors.
Hello there Bruce!!! Lots of little things addressed on this old girl!!! The gas leak must have been frustrating, but finding the missing fiber washer probably made you feel good. The smoking issue on start up, do you think that is normal? I wonder why it does that... Anyways, another interesting repair. Thanks for taking us along!!!
Well the engine is worn on the top end. (rings and valves) I know it will continue to run for a long time. I just put it to work picking up all the leaves and twigs. I am going to start it next spring to see if that helped as it did sit outside for 2 or 3 years. That is harder on them than using them
What is the purpose of that little "bowl" on the side of that older version carb, do you know? Seems to me I asked this on a forum once but I have forgotten the answer.
Hmm thought I already commented on this video. Great video. It seems like this mower was a little naughty to get fixed and running well. But as usual you got her done. By the way, I bought some fuel lines for my weed whacker a month or so ago. Do you remember where I put them? They were those yellow ones. If you find them let me know.
I started watching this at lunch. I’m talking to you when you’re getting the emulsion tube out, and when you reassembled it. My co-workers are looking at me ascanse. Talking to a video, huh? I was so carried away, like I was standing next to you. Good thing you couldn’t hear what I said, as I laughed my ass off. Get a leak down tester. I got one at HF, I think k it was $60.00. You can diagnose an engine in 20 minutes. . Bet you find worn rings. Good job.. SCORE! No matter what.
i have an older briggs 3.5 hp it runs ok but no power. it doesn't have much compression, it idles fine until i go to mow the grass then it Boggs out and dies. it was made back in the late '70s and it has an auto choke. i am going to change the carb gasket as soon as i find one. i converted it to electronic ign and it fires right up just no power.
Bruce I have a toro 421 snow blower I instal a new carburetor the problem runs good on low idle when I pul up to full idle the engines dies any idea thanks
20% mean green and 80% water or so. It isn't that close. Now check the mean green for ammonia as it turns the aluminium black. There are different makes.
Hi Bruce. Honda still make and sell those carburettors but they are only on the gxv commerical engines. They gcv carbs are junk, and best replaced with a Chinese knock off from my experience. 👍
Agree that after-market carbs are fine (& really inexpensive) but disagree that gcv carbs are "junk." If they are, then I have a "junk" gcv OEM that has been running good for 7 years.
@@jjparody8257 I have Hondas with both design of carbs on. Gxv carbs seen to live forever and are easily cleaned. Gcv carbs I've taken apart and look like new. But however many times I've cleaned them thoroughly they just hunt abit. Put on a Chinese and run a treat! Maybe down to all the ethanol in English fuel🤔
Might be one you keep for yourself, if you do not want a buyer to freak out over the smoke. Or someone of limited means who would be very happy to have a good old solid Honda that smokes vs a new top dollar "Perfect" mower that will not last 100 hours.
I think it is my mic recording the engine. . I check RPM's on other machines every once in a while and I am good. I have had a lot of comments likethis and I never seem to have the issue. I have a tach. Thanks though i will check it again.
I don't really see any benefit to having a clutch on the blade. It just adds unnecessary complexity and cost, but doesn't actually solve any problem. Maybe it was a "solution in search of a problem ".
24:44 THE MOST DANGEROUS THING I EVER SAW YOU DO! You are such a stickler for safety but you left a running lawnmower with a blade attached unsecured on top of your work bench and walked away. That mower is vibrating at a high RPM and could easily vibrate itself off that bench with the prop spinning at waste high height. I cringed watching you do that. You cannot continue doing your videos after catching a spinning blade that rakes down your body from your waist to your feet.
