A follow-up video on the interview process for Kaiser would be great. There are just so many different processes that people talk about. Is it one or more individual interviews, or a panel interview? Do they ask unique questions or basic ones....please share! :0) Great videos!
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 года назад
Thanks for the video suggestion! When it comes to the interview process it is going to be different from department to department, position to position, and hospital to hospital. New grads applying for a residency process go through many lengths to get a job offer. They have to interview with a panel of nursing staff/managers and are competing with thousands of other nurses. They go through several interviews and have to take tests to make it to the top round of prospective applicants. Experienced nurses have it a little bit easier. But, they must still take a test, then they will need to interview with one or more department heads, possibly nurses, and depending on the manager/director you must be prepared to answer NCLEX-like questions in person.

I love your heart and honesty. I have not met people who are so open about applying to jobs in nursing . It always seems like nurse earnings and job opportunities is a secret . I also wish Kaiser didn’t prioritize family . Some of us have lost all our families and family is just us . Every one should be treated equally. We don’t chose to loose our families . Nor should families choose same careers :( for security . Every human being has their own path they need to follow . I prefer referrals and I can’t wait to put your name on it. I would never have known about nursing in California was it not for u and Monica being so honest and opening ur world to us . God bless you abundantly 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. See you in the next video :).

Check alternative options like going through staffing agencies. This is not difficult, get a professional to set up your resume and CL. Check AMN Healthcare or American Mobile staffing, the give you the option to choose specific facilities you want to work as a travel nurse. KP is one of them, you could start there or use any other one around there as a means to getting to KP as Jason did.

Having a relative may help but it's definitely not the deciding factor. Most of my coworkers do not have any relatives who work in the Kaiser system. Actually, this problem is more prevelanf when we lived in NYC. In NYC you got a job because of who you knew and not what you knew. You could also literally walk into the hospital ask for a manager and hand them your resume, tell them you want to work there, and they would forward your info to HR and you'd have a job in less time than out here. I tried to do that here in Sacramento when I first visited. I waited into the ER with my resume in hand, asked the staff if I could speak with a manager, and they straight up told me they don't do that here and that I had to go online like everyone else and apply through there. I was really turned off when they said that to me but I totally get it. They want to make the hiring process as fair and as unbiased as possible, so they ask everyone to follow the same process.

Thanks for always commenting on my videos! My brother lives in Oakland and I know many people hate on it but Monica and I love it there! The location is perfect and the weather is always on point. I have the Stanford contract and they do pay more than Kaiser but they're also located in a city that could easily be considered the city with the highest cost of living in the country. At least with Kaiser, because they have hospitals all over the state, you get to settle in a location with a relatively low cost of living and still benefit from having higher wages.

It could help you land a job in a medsurg unit if you are a new grad and currently work for the hospital, but it's nearly impossible to get hired into an ED as a new grad. So, if your goal is to work in the ED I would recommend you get a job at another hospital (even if it's part time), get like 6 months to 1 year of experience, and then apply for an ER position at Kaiser.

Thank you so much for this video and all of your videos/advice! I'm done with my BSN in 3 week in FL. My plan is to take the NCLEX within 2-4 weeks and try and transfer my license to CA asap! I'll probably have to work here until the CA license comes in but I'm excited to get started! Have had 5 recruiters from different hospitals in the South Florida area come to our university and it seems like the average starting pay for a new grad is around $26 an hour with average patient load of 6-7 patients per nurse (and that was 2 hospitals saying that's what they "try" and keep their nurses at meaning sometimes nurses get more patients). All but one hospital requires new grads sign a 2 year contract with cancellation fee's of close to $10K. I'm hoping for better in CA.
@ocholiocholi5735
@ocholiocholi5735 3 года назад
I'll defer to the knowledge of others here. I think you can choose CA as your state of licensure while taking the NCLEX and you would not need to transfer. If that is possible, I would start applying to jobs in CA, no time to waste. I think you can even apply to the residency program Jason spoke about here. Check all the other hospitals he mentioned in his other videos and apply to all of them.
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 года назад
@Christopher, @Ochili made some good points. The NCLEX is a national exam, and it's only part of what you need when obtaining your license. You can take the NCLEX in any state and then, afterward, choose the state you want to apply for licensing. So, in this case, you can take your test in Florida, and apply for your license through the California website. Also, definitely do look into nurse residency programs (I have a link to one in my RU-vid page's community tab).

@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 года назад
I think I will have to make a video about the culture at Kaiser. I will say this, every hospital has its pros and cons. I worked at Sutter Roseville and I absolutely loved my coworkers and the automy. But, I disliked the way in which assignments were handed out, although that always comes with the job and it did improve by the time I left. Kaiser, on the other hand, is in a league of it's own, it's like a well-oiled machine (for the most part) and things seem to be very robotic at times. Before going to Kaiser I heard about micromanagement and I was terrified of working here, but this is going to be highly dependent on your supervisors, managers, and director. The Kaiser I work with has very down-to-earth administrators and there is VERY little micromanagement because it seems like our census is way too high half the time to even pay attention to that. However, the one thing that does have to get audited is our stroke, sepsis, and MI documentation because we pride ourselves in having those things in check. When it comes to employee relationships, however, this is where Kaiser falls short. I have had the most amazing relationships (on a deep level) with everyone I have worked with prior to coming to Kaiser. Once at Kaiser, though, my relationships with my coworkers feel a bit superficial. We do get to talk to each other. I've even hung out with a couple of them, but it just doesn't feel the same. I hope my response answered some of your questions. If you have any others, feel free to let me know.

This is all dependent on the hospital and even the unit. Before moving to Cali, I heard this about Kaiser and I was terrified of working there. Management in my department is always working on trying to be better. My unit is pretty tight knit and we have a good relationship with our ANMs and Managers. My manager is very approachable and I can talk to her about anything. Also, an ANM's personality and work ethic can be very different from another.

Hey loving the content man! I know Kaiser likes to promote and hire from within but how are they with transferring units/floors. Like if you start on Tele or Medsurg will you ever have the opportunity to move to ICU or ER without previous experience in those departments? Are they willing to cross-train you?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 года назад
Hey, thanks for the question! Unfortunately, one of the things Kaiser is not known for is cross training their nurses. We have had many nurses leave the hospital system because they were ER nurses trying to get into an ICU but were turned away because of the "lack of critical care experience". So sad because it's the only hospital system I've worked for that does this. Although, we have had our ER nurses go to every other unit (like PACU, GI (endoscopy), IR, and many others). As a Tele nurse I do think they will consider you for a position in anyone of those units except for the ICU. So, if you ultimately want to end up in an ICU within the Kaiser system, I highly recommend you get that experience elsewhere before you apply for a position at Kaiser.

Thank you for sharing so much about salaries and how to get a job. Can you share more about what you do everyday? I’m interested in nursing school and I’d like to know more about the responsibilities and duties! Also, is the job itself hard. What’s the most challenging part?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 2 года назад
The most challenging part has been what we have been dealing with over the last 2 years. We all get into nursing (and medicine) knowing we wanted to help others, but we could have never imagined the amount of patients we would encounter that have no regard for themselves or others around them. Many of our patients this past year getting admitted or dying have been unvaccinated (not being political at all, but this is a fact). They have made it difficult for us to treat patients that come to the hospital with non-covid-related illnesses. Every day that I come to work, the doctor and nurses say they feel so defeated because we have very sick patients that have to sit in our waiting rooms for hours because we have no room in our ER to treat them in. It's extremely frustrating, and it's one of the reasons why so many nurses are leaving bedside nursing since covid came into existence. Other than that, some other challenges are: trying balance your focus between charting and providing compassionate patient care; not always being able to spend the holidays with your loved ones because you might be scheduled to work one major holiday per year (although this is not a problem at Kaiser because everyone wants to work the holiday since it pays double time and a half and anyone would be willing to swap with you); and one of the things I hate the most is taking on more roles than you thought nursing would entail (like having to arrange transportation for a patient going back home, or trying to fix broken equipment you need to perform your duties). I'll probably make a video about this topic because there's a lot more to it than what I could say in a RU-vid comment reply.

Hi, Thanks for the comment! I will actually be making a video to show our viewers what to do before, during, and after applying for a job at Kaiser. Getting a job at Kaiser is usually easier toward the end of the year because that's when departments get their budgets approved for the next fiscal year. Also, it took Kaiser about 1-2 weeks to notify me (via a phone call) that they would like to bring me in for an interview. It's by far the best insurance we have ever had. We are able to get appointments with our primary doctors and referrals to specialists within days of sending them a message on the KP health mobile app. We are also able to reserve the pick up of prescriptions or blood draws right through the app. It's amazing! Hi, thanks for the question! Your experience as a CNA, future LVN degree, and future experience in an urgent care center will make you a great candidate for most positions. However, it may be difficult to get a job as an LVN at Kaiser. LVNs, although hired as such, often times perform basic duties like checking vital signs, doing ekgs, and drawing labs. They aren’t usually put in a role where they are receiving full patient assignments. However, if you are looking to actually get hired at an ER and gain patient care experience, I recommend you apply to a non-kaiser hospital, preferably a small community hospital because they are more likely to give you more autonomy to gain the skills that would get you a job at a place like Kaiser.

Congrats on pursuing nursing! In order to get a job in California, as a new grad, you should try to stand out from your peers. See if you can volunteer in a hospital during or after you finish your degree. That is something I did and I think it really helped me in my applications. Also, make sure you are always looking for "nurse residency programs" because hospitals like Kaiser Permanente and UC Davis often hire dozens of new grads through those programs. And, also, make sure you visit California to check out the areas before you move so you know what it is that you're getting yourself into. Oh, and don't forget to obtain your license before you apply because most employers won't even look at your application unless you have your license.

Can you (or anyone reading this) tell me about being a traveler, working 1,000 hours, then getting hired as staff? Do the 1,000 hours as a traveler have to be at the same facility that I will get the staff job at? Also, does the 1,000 hours as a traveler give me an advantage over non-kaiser applicants? I couldn't find info about that online. Thanks for the video!

The Kaiser facility to take a traveling gig for would tell you that they would prefer you complete 1,000 in their facility before you consider applying. And, yes, working as a traveler in the facility would increase your chances of being hired over someone who has never worked for Kaiser.

@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 11 месяцев назад
As long as you work 20 hours or more per week, you earn the same benefits (paid time off, sick leave, holiday pay, birthday holidays, continuing education pay, etc...) as a full time employee. 40 hours is what's considered full time but you'll rarely see a "full time" employee working at Kaiser.

Hello sir I’m very thankful for all your videos. I was bothered by the current news about KP and it’s staff doing work strike … What is happening to KP?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches Год назад
Kaiser is a multi-billion-dollar organization and in the first half of this year they've already made over 3 billion in profit. The employees who are planning to go on strike are part of the SEIU-UHW union, which means it does not involve the nurses who are part of the CNA (California Nurses Union) in Northern California. The nurses who are represented by CNA have already secured a 3 year contract as of last November. However, the threat of the current strike involves employees across dozens of roles at the company, including registered nurses, admissions staff, cleaners, phlebotomists, surgery assistants, and others who work in California, Colorado, Washington, and several other states. They-and for good reason-don't feel like they are staffed properly or paid well (considering employees in Northern California's Kaiser hospitals get hired wages). So, if the strike does occur, it will mean that up to 85,000 employees across all of those states would not be showing up for work and the entire system would be affected.

In Northern California case managers do not follow a different pay scale. If you look at my other videos, you will see the last scale and will be able to deduce how much you would earn based on your years of experience as a nurse. You can transfer from a northern California Kaiser to another Northern California Kaiser and maintain your seniority but if you're transferring from a Central California or Southern California Kaiser to a Northern California Kaiser the only thing you maintain is your years of service, so you'll still accrue pto and sick time based on your years of service. Almost all their positions are part time with the max being 32. 8 hour shifts though so it feels more like a full-time job. And you can always easily pick up extra shifts if you want. It’s honestly kind of how their job model works, nurses are brought on at 24 hours but can pick up as many shifts as they want. How much does one make off the Kaiser pension and how does it work
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 года назад
Here is the text from the contract: "An employee is entitled to a Normal Monthly Pension if he/she retires on his/her 65th birthday and has completed at least one year of Pension Service. The Normal Monthly Retirement income shall be 1.4% of Final Average Monthly Compensation (FAMC is the average of the employee’s base monthly compensation rate for the highest sixty consecutive months within the last 120 months of employment) multiplied by years and partial years of Credited Service. For purposes of determining FAMC, the base monthly compensation rate shall include evening and night shift differentials. For employees retiring on or after January 1, 2007, the pension multiplier shall be 1.45% of Final Average Monthly Compensation." Basically, this is what it means: let's say your average monthly income is $10,000 and you worked for Kaiser for 30 years before retiring, they would calculate your monthly pension like this-->($10,000*30)*(1.45%)=$4,350/mo So, if you retire at the age of 65, your monthly pension benefits would be $4,350/mo, unless you opt for a lump sum payout.

It's really going to vary. I have many friends and coworkers that have recently graduated nursing school and, because they applied to every single hospital, they were able to find work within a month or two of applying. You just have to be willing to apply for anything and everything if you want to get a job sooner. And you have to apply for dozens, if not hundreds, of jobs per day. The more you apply, the faster you'll get employed.

Thank you for the insight! Is getting a RN job with the state a thing in Sacramento? Doesn’t seem like that’s a popular option.

Your full of baloney.. I've been a nurse for Kaiser Permanente for over 20 years and never heard anybody making over 350K.. even a CRNA dont make that much unless you work 24/7..

Gotcha. So I and all of our coworkers must be imagining our paychecks. It's pretty obvious you have not seen my videos where I've shown actual paystubs that my coworkers have given me to use in our videos. More than half of the nurses i work with are earning over $200k/yr and over 1/4 are earning over $300k/$400k. They literally show me their paystubs and tell me I can use them in these videos if I want.
