Id have gone with a smaller circle or a square my self that extra strip of grass on each side would annoy me being that thin. This is a great tip for circles id never thought about trying it until seeing this.
Looks amazing I would say though to make sure your trees root flare has room to breath and is not covered to much. A Secondary root system could grow about it cause it to grow in the mulch.
This is the comment I was looking to upvote or leave myself if I couldn’t find it. The recommendation is to keep the mulch 3 inches away from the trunk of the tree for various reasons. And definitely don’t “volcano” the mulch (in other words, don’t hill up the mulch around the trunk of the tree).
So cool. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go when you were about to start. What an awesome idea and looks incredible !!! Love the black mulch too. Makes everything pop
Wow. That’s absolutely brilliant. I’m cutting in a new bed today. This is one of those “why didn’t I think of that deals. Wow. I’ll be doing the same in about an hour.
I'm needing to do the same thing and had the same idea but I'm glad you went out and tested it first so I know it can be done this way haha. Good job, looks great.
My new house has our trees planted and its been about 8 months now, I am going to attempt this since there arent any perfect circles, plus some weeds growing. thats a nice perfect line!
I laughed because you sounded so unsure at first and you cut a mean pie, but I was thinking of doing it exactly like that, now I know that's the way to go; it turned out awesome, great video.
So funny how totally opposite it was at my crib. I used to have mulch around the trees and got completely fed up with pulling bermuda runners out of it. Ripped it all out and now just have clean grass around 'em. Wife was against it at first, now she loves it. Great execution! Looks nice!
Great job! I have the same EGO Powerhead Edger! Did you put the wheel setting all the way down to get the maximum depth? Also did cutting into the dirt like that dull the edger blade at all? I want to try this method out soon.
Great idea. But yes. way to big/not enough grass left next to the concrete. My village tree is set in a smaller space between the sidewalk and curb, and eventually I made mine wide enough and eliminated the grass between the concrete areas. It now looks like two parentheses...but still looks perfectly manicured.
Been wanting to mulch around my trees also, problem I have is getting the GM1000 in those tight areas without running into some mulch and ruining the reel. Whats your plan of action for those tight areas?
What kind of grass do you have? At first I thought it was bermuda til I saw the stripes. Follow up video on maintaining the edge and keeping the grass from creeping
I did the same but also added a buried circle of plastic edging, so that Bermuda rhizomes wouldn't enter the tree beds. It's done that job for two years now.
From the masters lawn care: “Landscape fabric is not needed beneath mulch to block weeds, if you have the correct amount of mulch. Also, as the mulch breaks down, the nutrients and compost cannot do their job of helping the plants' roots and weeds end up seeding into the compst on top of the fabric.”
