How to get a Vintage Spark Ignition Plane Engine Running!

This is a Vintage Frog 500 Spark Ignition engine from about 1950.
I just got it a couple of weeks ago from Australia and I don't think it's run in a long time. This is the very first time I have tried to start it as a full sparky.I ran it a couple of weeks ago with glow fuel and a glow plug and it ran well. Seems to run even better as a petrol engine!
The "condenser" is a WIMA MKS 4 0,1/250- capacitor which I bought from Maplins a while ago.
I have several other coils and condensers that I bought recently and I will be testing them in the near future.

It's a real good idea to know where top-dead-center is in relation to the position of the spark timing lever!

I have an O+R 60 which runs well, but I would like to convert it to glow. How do I get a glowplug to fit it, and would I need to alter the spraybar or glow fuel mixture? I live in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa.

Is there anything special about the coils? I see these going for $25-$40 on ebay in the US. Seems like a couple of coils around an iron core and you would have the same thing. Anyway, excellent vid - I have bought 3-4 over the years over ebay and want to get them running...

Any idea how much the batteries(s), coil & condenser weigh ? Running it on pump gas, with some oil added for lubrication ?

Normal lead free petrol with motorbike 2 stroke oil. 3 to 1.

I have a Fox .35 engine it's way older than that it's from when you have to use strings to steer a rc plane

The USA was way ahead of the UK when it came to engines. Every factory in the UK between 1939 and 45 was making munitions and it was illegal to fly powered model planes during the war. (In the USA, model engines evolved over that 5 years). After the war, most UK engines looked like copies of Pre war USA engines. The Frog 500 is a copy of a Fox (I think), so it was the most up to date. It started as a sparky, got converted to a glow and then they released a small amount of sparky versions between 1950 and 52. After that it was all glow for 13 years! It was the first successful UK glow engine and used in control line (U control) planes mainly.

What oil do you use in the 3/1 mixture?

+Gerry Priddle I have been using motorbike 2 stroke oil. But you could use caster oil or sae 10 (lawn mower) oil. Just choose 1 and stick to it. I have found that with another engine of mine, I started with caster, went to 2 stroke oil, then when back to caster and it seemed to bung up the engine. I then went back to 2 stroke oil and after a very long run, it freed up and started producing more power (back to how it was when I first used it). Caster oil smells better. Use Castrol R or get Caster oil from Model Technics.
