When my Daddy died in 2006, the local florist called Momma's house. She knew my Momma for years, and was concerned about the amount of floral tributes. My Momma can't abide the smell of too many floral arrangements at funerals due to her allergies. This lovely woman asked if we wanted Momma to receive herbal garden pots rather than flowers. We happily said yes. My Momma's yard is now filled with lemon balm, chocolate mint, peppermint, rosemary, oregano, sage and lemon basil...plants that she uses throughout the growing and canning season.

We had a tornado go thru our area and hit a Girl Scout Camp Area hard. My husband stopped by and asked if he cleaned up the tree's, if he could have the wood. They said sure. He and our boys cleaned up them up and we got 11 hardwood trees for wood. It lasted us for 3 years. It took them a week, but well worth time and saved us a lot of money.

A former coworker posted on FB that her 2 burner Blackstone griddle was no longer working and was free to whoever. I picked it up, replaced the burnt out igniter, disassembled the tubes and blew them out. I then spent 4 hrs on July 4th grinding off the rust to the hardened steel, reseasoned the griddle and now have a brand new $300 Blackstone all for free and labor.

How exciting, your famous debut! I am like you, as far as, frugal. I bought a tractor at a yard sale years ago for $140. With some implements, even. I got home and called my husband to tell him. He said, “ does it run?” I said, “I don’t know”. He asked, “why did you buy it, then”? I said, “because it was $140”. 😆. Turned out it was a great little tractor, that ran great! I had it for many years before we had to move, then I donated it to an auction for a Christian school.

February 14 is a great day because its when I received the gift of my youngest son. A smiling, laughing blue eyed, blond haired bundle of joy who is still making me smile 23 years later. Those free items may be given to you but you have to invest time, energy and work to make use of them. My best free thing is a curio cabinet that I wanted for many years but could not justify spending the money on when other things were needed worse and then a friend was getting rid of some things and asked if I wanted a curio cabinet she had. I did jump for joy that day.

After bad storms, many people have lots of tree branches down in their yards, and many of them put them at the curb to get picked up with the trash. Others need help cleaning them up. You could use them to fill the bottom of your raised beds. They don't have to be dead or dried. If you want to burn them, they need to be stacked and left to dry out for awhile though.

When I do my winter sowing in milk jugs, once I get what I need and what my daughter needs, I give the rest of the seedlings away to people I see out working in their yards. At first, they think I am offering to sell them, but once they realize that I am just trying to find them a home.....I get big smiles, and thank you.

Thank you for this post. This love that you are saving things that others would just trash. My Mom did the same when we were kids. She would pick apples from the neighbors tree and keep half and leave them half or what they could use. She had older people who would call her to pick their raspberries because they couldn’t and we all would go over and then leave what they needed. We also picked onions and potatoes up after they were harvested by the owners. There were many left and then she would share with friends and family. Thank you for continuing to save the food and things that can be reused!!!

Just found you, Tessie! Can’t wait to watch more of your videos. I have spent a lot of time in PA in my life. My great grands and my Grandma lived in York, County. Grandma didn’t live all that far from Lancaster so I’ve been there many times. What beautiful farms!!! I loved the farmers markets and especially the quilts. I am now old and sick, mostly bed/home bound. If I were physically able I’d do something along this line to try to get some things I really need but can’t afford. My grandma was a wheeler dealer. I think the only new thing she had in her home was her refrigerator, stove….shower and bathroom necessities. Just the basics. She in turn made friends til her death. We lost her in July 1997. She was the coolest Grandma ever. She canned spaghetti sauce, vegetable soup, all kinds of jams, jellies, apple butter, relishes, pickles, and she had two freezers full. She would have loved you!! Sorry for yakking so long. You brought back sweet memories. I’m in NE Tennessee, born and bred. It’s strange how fast our lives seem to fly by leaving us in that hard to deal with “old age”. 😂 Prayers for you and your family to have every need met and be blessed with good health and prosper. I’m glad to hear that as you are being blessed you are paying it forward. Caring is sharing. Vikki from Tennessee . 🏔️ 🙏🏻💜

I am always on the lookout for free seeds and even free soil (after floods you can get free soil). I like to grow for myself and for patrons of our town's senior citizen center when I can manage to grow extra. So many elderly people (I'm 65, so I am talking older than myself) are unable to grow a garden anymore. It is nice when I can take extra greens from my garden and give to them or take flowers to the local retirement home for the staff to place on the lunch table. I don't get to see them enjoy the flowers, but I imagine they are enjoying them as I get ooohs and ahhs plus "I used to grow those......" as I take the flowers in. Don't forget the local senior retirement home when you are making donations. They would like to have your craft stuff and maybe even your baby dolls for their clients with dementia as well as some hygiene/hair products. It makes me feel good when I can give seeds to people who stop and compliment me on my garden as they are driving by. If you get free stuff, you must keep feeding the circle by giving free stuff and of your time. I am currently looking for the things that I need to create a sun oven. Make a list and pray over it.

Years ago when I was younger I was very poor and got things either free or at thrift stores God always provided what I needed. Then I was in a better place and went to nursing school I’ve made good money since but I was still being blessed with people giving me things. I’m still wearing some clothes a patients grandmother asked if I wanted as we were the same size!!! That’s been 16 years ago!!!

Wow Tessie you are indeed one of a kind always thinking and planning. I have a new friend who has a pear tree and asked her if I could have some she looked at me are you for real!!! She told me that no one wanted her tree bearing fruit because they weren’t perfect enough for them. I said are you kidding I would love to have some off the ground so she told me to come over the next day and pick them. When I went over they were mostly gone and she was testing me which I found out later to see if I really would pick them off the ground. I then told her someone else must have found them because there were only a few left. She then told me she picked them herself and she gave me 4 huge grocery bags full of pears. Oh I was so happy I canned them all except the bigger ones that we had for eating. Mind you these pears are super small not sure what they are called but they were the best I had ever eaten. Being in northern MN not many pears tree exist that get tree ripened - I myself have a pear tree that is 15 years old and got my first pears last fall but they never ripened and looked like small apples but pear shaped.
@kaythegardener
@kaythegardener 7 месяцев назад
Pears need to be picked "green & hard" & then ripened till ready under cool conditions ( about 7-10 days, depending upon picking softness) Then they are ready for eating; canning ones take a couple of days more to ripen. You'll find the correct stage by trial & error!! Do you know enough about pruning, etc to help your neighbor improve her trees?

Oh, during the pandemic, I went to my local feed and seed store looking to purchase mason jars, as there was a shortage of them. A kind lady behind me in line mentioned that she had boxes of gently used mason jars she could donate to me. To my surprise, 20 of them were antique liberty jars. When I offered her $50 for the jars, she refused. I remembered her saying at the store that she loved collard greens but couldn't garden like she used to. Since I had extra greens from my garden, I brought her some in exchange for the jars. She was truly a blessing.

As for getting something for free as I believe was a blessing from God one of the rooms was full of brand new clothes still with tags in my size and shoes. There were also oil lamps, furniture, etc. As for something I would like to get that would be shelves or bookcases for me to make a pantry for my food and supplies, starts of flowers like I left behind, and some old french doors and windows for a project this spring. I now have 7 baths, four old wheelbarrows and two extra large coolers which I have turned into my raised garden beds. What I really took away from your video is to ask! If you don’t ask…. Lots of people have old refrigerators sitting around, that they are too overwhelmed to move. I get them, paint them up in various ways (my favorite is bricks), and make them into raised beds. Fill them with wood chips and cow manure, let them rot, and use them as raised beds. For trellises, I use old trampoline frames. This year, I am going out on a limb, and I bought a few flower seeds to plant. I've always just done veggies in my raised beds.

We get oranges, potatoes, apples, and tomatoes . We go through the bags and remove any bad ones. Wash the good stuff. There's a video we watch that taught us how to check the meats to make sure that it is good. My brother-in-law just came by and got some meat and oranges. The rest of our family "politely" decline. Of course, the noses are wrinkled 😂 The best thing I got free was a 3 wheel walker. We helped someone with a house clean out. I didn't need it then, but later, when i broke my hip, it became my biggest help. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. Take care. ❤❤

Thanks Tessie, I also enjoy getting things for free. I built my chicken coop for almost free, I had to buy the screws and nails to put it a together. I found pallets & reclaimed lumber and windows all of which I used to make my chicken coop. Then I picked up a few gallons of used paint at ReStore, different colors, but that was fine because I wanted my coop to be colorful. The metal roofing was given to me because it was dinged up a little here or there, but worked fine for the roof! My nesting box was a wooden toy box that the lid was broken so someone was tossing it, I asked if I could have it and they said sure. I tipped it up on its side and built some shelves in it with reclaimed lumber and my chickens love it. I wish I could post a photo of it, it's so cute! And it was almost all for free!

I enjoyed your video! When I haul my trash away, I always look at the items left at the dump for free. I have found several nice things. It's encouraging to hear you speak on your lifestyle and how to gather supplies that otherwise would have been thrown away. I like how you have built up your Homestead with a variety of sourced items. You show that it can be done!

Curbside yard waste bins - I haven't done much for dumpster diving but, I have been known to poke into yard waste bins sitting curbside for bulbs, tubers, and even shrubs. For a while, I knew folks who did landscaping and often they dig stuff out then take it to the dump or yard waste recycling. And then networking by letting folks know you'll take stuff they are getting rid of. Being able and willing to dig stuff out, you get all the more.

You and I are so much alike. When you showed that you save rocks to build and use later..........I laughed because I do the same. I recycle everything for my garden, made a fence out of pallet wood, built garden boxes out of free wood, cardboard for ground cover to kill grass in areas I wanted to make walkways. Use straw and leaves for my garden.

Great video Tessie. I am enjoying your longer videos . I had gotten free one time just driving by and seeing it outside and went to the yard sale the next day it was an old Singer sewing machine and it was electric with the sewing table it would drop into it went into and the lady had told me that I could just take it. I always have my eye out for a old singer or any brand that will fit on my treadle that I have but have not found a treadle singer or any brand to put on it. Hope you both have a great week

I walk my dog every evening. While I was out there was a almost new water bath canner with the rack, jar lifter and funnel with a free sign. I put it on my hip and walked home with the dog and a huge smile. Another time there was a bistro size black metal table again on my walk. It wasn’t heavy so I picked it up and walked 2 blocks home with it. In the spring our town does a clean up and hauls what is put out to the dump. I check those piles for garden items and have found great serviceable items and kept them out of the landfill. Last year I got free chain link perfect for gardening.

I do a bit of this also, if someone leaves something in my apartment building laundry room that I can use, like a bag of beans or can of food I take it. I found pots to plant in by the dumpster, I have also taken home things from my mosque that we either no longer needed, were not the right things. I have also been sent products to review, some good, some not so good

When we had cows we used to go pick up the craft brewery’s spent grains. Used in composting and the cows loved it. We had to come pick it up when they called and it was heavy stuff. The brewery didn’t have to pay to dispose of it and we had the acres to use it

Tessie I so enjoyed this video. Your wisdom is amazing! I think that God Morning America or someone should have you as a featured guest. You have so much great help and advice that would help many in our country. I think what you offer could be life changing for many . I got a wonderful primitive cabinet for free a couple years ago. I have also received hostas and many free perennials. I would love to find a vintage runner or fabric piece for a tiny table runner. I can't wait for Feb. 14th.

My best free thing i got has been a crepemaker we use it all the time and some beautiful artist paintings which i cherish. Great tip for free items is to look for things offseason you are more likely to get free garden items in autumn and winter and free winter clothes for example in summer.

I have been buying more glass jars like spaghetti jars and I keep them like you said. Also the different meats containers I have been buying only meats and cherry tomato containers that I can use for garden seed starters or for Tupperware type of uses and it's useful in more ways than one. I realized this more and more and it's been very useful. Thanks for sharing you're experience and ideas that you have used and have worked for you. I really appreciate you and you're channel and all your old-fashioned ways because I am too and have a blessed evening!

Hi, Tessie! We used to participate in Freecycle, too; it was a wonderful way to give and get items. Sadly, the local group is no longer in existence This video was excellent and so informative. I'd have to say the best free items I've gotten are my raised beds, some small tables, and my desk. My husband built them all from pallets or other reclaimed wood that he was given. I'm so excited for you and this interview opportunity you have coming up-looking forward to seeing it. You have so much to share that will be helpful for people!

Before my Mother passed and on Hospic. I started going through and packing up her things, as l did this l would put things on the swing she had out front of her apartment. I just put things l was not going to pack up out on this swing with a sign that read FREE if you want it. But please be quite so not to disturb my Mother and please keep it clean. When l lived in Payson there was a place they called The Mission you could donate too and get what you needed all for free. When l decided to move from Payson to Phoenix l donated a lot of things to them. I learn to barter from my Dad when l was a child.

Hello Tessie and Friends, This was a great video! I have known to frequent Thrift Stores, Garage Sales at the end of their day, and free stuff on the curb. I grew up foraging for food, and sharing with friends and relatives the surplus of our homestead. I am on the look out for old kitchen gadgets, and books on rabbit care and bees. They don't need to be pretty, or fully functional. Have a great interview, I can't wait to see it.

Great video tonight. I think the best deal I ever got was when I bought jars from a woman who had a company making barbecue sauce. It was a couple of hundred dollars but I got a lot of jars. Currently, I am looking for one of those hand pumps that goes on top of the well. Not the short one, but the taller one. And a Wood Stove. Around here there aren’t many options for free food. The food pantry sometimes runs out of food and there is none when you go. They even give out expired food to people in the bags because they have nothing else. Things have changed a lot in the past few years.

Here in Wales,UK, our local council has an initiative where everything taken to the recycling centres/landfill sites is sorted and they have an on site store where items in acceptable condition are available to buy at very low prices. I also buy from and donate to our local charity shops, especially our Red Cross bookshop. Our local wholesale greengrocer often has great bargains on boxes of fruit that are starting to turn and I buy boxes of 60 or 70 apples for £5 and can them whenever I see them. We still have Freecycle operating in this area as well.

Amen Tessie, I got 20 mineral tubs and pallets from a cattle man in my area, I told him I needed it for my veggie garden, he said will give me the tubs but he wanted veggies like tomatos, bell peppers, onions, broccoli, cauliflower. I agreed and now when he has empties I go pick them up and my work use to just throw out pallets and now I get those pallets which I put my grow bags on so not hitting my grow bags with weedwacker. My garden has become from 5 raised beds to 8 raised beds 20 mineral tubs and 10 wicking tubs and 30 grow bags 😁 since I live mid texas I grow 10 months out of 12

My most recent free gift from a neighbor was my garden fencing and t posts!I am thrilled! I was able my expand my garden so much last year! My wish is for a solar power bank as I care for my parents who have a host of health problems and we lose our power all the time! They need cpap machines at night and that would help me so much! The longest stretch with no power was 36 days! I am on a fixed income and it was winter! So running a generator was beyond costly so at night I had to shut it off! Our furnace is electric so I also had a propane heater so had that expense also! So maybe someday I can get one to help my family be safe
