My dream gear for an 80s specific tone is the George Lynch's tone in the Tooth and nail, Under Lock and Key, and Back for the Attack albums. Particularly, the Tooth and Nail album.

A Soldano IR with a Detune chorus, a plate reverb and some delay with the mix not too high should do the trick for you.

Nicely done! Reminds me of my old ADA rig from back in the day:MP-1, MQ-1, Alesis QuadraVerb, B200S, and 4 Vertical SplitStack 2x12 cabs. Eventually replaced the MP1 and MQ-1 with the MP-2, which I still have. Cheers!

I dig most all of the 80s guitar tones like Whitesnake, Motley, and many others. But Tesla, GnR & Great White are my favorites. I can get any of those tones with my Peavy 6505 or PRS MT-15 with the appropriate pedals of course. Thx for the vid and keep Bangin' out that Hair Metal 🤘

Got to beJB pickups for 80s I reckon. The most popular guitars weren't pointy as such, but the Kramers with the phallic headstock.

Don't forget Kahler trems. They were a thing. Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouilllet, Jason Becker, Richie Sambora, Billy Gibbons, K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, Steve Clark, even George Lynch (and many others) all used Kahlers in the Eighties.

What songs/bands did you use to guide this? I ask because I gigged regularly back then and in recordings generally you heard a JC-120 for cleans and a Marshall Plexi or JCM800 with a Tube Screamer or SD-1 in front. Later on, the rack gear came in and so did Soldano and the like. Also, generally the reverb was big but mixed low and the delay for a lead was typically in the 315ms to 450ms range. White Lion and Queensryche are my go to tone templates.

Great vid.. i too am stuck in the 80s metal tone. For my sound, im running a boss gt6 out in stereo to 2 marshall 100 w heads. Using compression( from gt6) and using a fender twin clean preamp setting. For distorion i opted to run boss metalzone pedal instead of gt6's boss metal zone distortion as the boss pedal mt2 has more eq control than mt2 distortion in gt6. I also run a doubling sound chorus(gt6) and a slight delay(gt6) to fill out both cabs to give a stereo sound. Sounds so very 80s metal

I remember kahler trems in lots of 80s guitars. Carvin had them. Slayer was 80s, they use it still I think.

Best 80's tones: 1. Def Leppard Hysteria - this is ALL of the 80s summarized and put into a single album. 2. GnR Appetite for Destruction. The opposite of Def L Hysteria: Raw and straightforward. A quintesential rock and roll album.

Good video.. Wow, my fav guitar tones from the 80's would have to be John Sykes tone on the Thin Lizzy and Blue Murder albums. I use however a 91 Charvel Predator which has a factory Schaller trem. You can't knock it out of tune once the strings are stretched and it's setup. Back in the day when I played in a band from time to time in the 80's I used a lot of guitars. Mostly a Lespaul and a Charvel model 3 with a floyd rose from Charvel.. I think it was a Charvel branded floyd, but it was good. I used an ADA preamp into Tube power amp. I can't remember the name of the poweramp. I also used a Marshall tube amp.. Before that I used a Fender Twin Reverb with a ratt pedal for gain stuff.. I also used reverb and chorus and two delays.. One delay set very very low and the other set somewhere between 500 and 850 milliseconds according to the song, etc.. I always wanted an Eventide rack pitch shifter, but too expensive. Now, I'm going to buy the pedal version. We live in a time that is just the best for us guitarists. Regards from the heartland. South Central Indiana. USA Tim

Does it matter what amp all these go into? I’ve only got a Line6 Spider IV 15 but a lot of people have suggested getting a better amp to use as a pedal platform if I’m gonna go for these sorts of sounds.

Thanks a lot for this video. I'm trying to understand how Motley Crue, Warrant, White Lion, Van Halen, Poison, Kingdom Come etc. got their 80s guitar tone. One issue is for example how to do some clean tapping: I mean distorted but clear, to get the note without beating the guitar too much.
@j.jaguilar9770

Try high gain with a fret wrap. if you don’t have one u can wrap a bandana around your first fret, it’ll dampen the strings you aren’t using (open strings)
@r4v3nner
@r4v3nner Год назад
@@j.jaguilar9770 practice using both hands to dampen strings and most of the time, the "slop" goes away when you actually can play something up to speed, not too much of a problem but using fretwraps are kinda ok idk

The bands above have some different tones, but higher gain lead pickups are often used by these players, and some of the pickups are specifically designed to make single notes stand out.

Yeh I kinda agree. He should of also used more "vintage" gear. Like a marshall amp or something similar to one. Boss pedals and MXR pedals are best for the 80's tone especially super overdrives, chorus, phaser, flanger, harmonizer and eq pedals. For a guitar that's not too expensive but not cheap either, there are some replicas of 80's guitars from Ibanez, Kramer. A basic fender Stratocaster or Epiphone Les Paul are also great.
@mikeythedistasteful
@mikeythedistasteful 2 дня назад
MXR micro chorus, micro delay, and noise clamp are three budget friendly pedals that are of good quality (not $30 pedals that sound like shyte) but all together you’re spending as much as a plethora x3. You could skip the noise gate (I personally don’t use one, not for cost but because it forces me to use less effects and lower gain). A great distortion is the Revv G2 - wide open sound of a Marshall or other vintage British amp. Those aren’t cheap but if you’re gonna spend money on one pedal or effect, chose that I promise you won’t be sorry. If you wanna go a bit cheaper, MXR GT-OD will get you there too.
