How To Get your pet Fish To School. schooling can occur even In A Nano Aquarium - Schooling vs. Shoaling behavior. Is Schooling a good thing, or is it a possible sign that your fish are afraid of other predatory fish in your tank? Is there a proper amount of fear or tension you can keep in a fish tan, in order to keep nano species like tetras, rasboras, danios etc schooling or shoaling?
Also, why is true schooling behavior so rare in captivity and what are some or the major advantages of keeping nano fish in large /nlong aquarium. shoaling for feeding time or finding a mate is one thing, however, full-on schooling is usually a stress response, or excitement for food, so how can we hack our fish's evolutionary reflexes to create dynamic patterns and movements within our tanks no matter the size.

when I saw this title, my immediate answer was..Keep them in a state of terror. Seriously though, I imagine it has a lot to do with the numbers you keep. I’ve seen some giant all-neon tetra tanks that look really cool. It really gives you a new appreciation for the fish that I feel that I kind of take for granted. I’ve got a little school of nine, but they rarely school. Lol, just very occasionally when they’re durping around. And there’s always that one little tetra that never manages to get with the school whenever they get together, and is off somewhere by himself.

You did it again! Learned something new today so now I'll be researching emergent intelligence. Always making me brain...... I have a 29 gallon with a dozen ember tetras who hang out mid center during the day but in the evening, when the lights are gradually dimming from 7 to 8pm, they all group together and swim from one side to the other. It's really quite beautiful to watch.

Significant dimming of light or turning on of light triggers schooling among I. kerri/ Purple emperor tetra. Their schooling then triggers the N. beckfordii/ Beckford's pencilfish to school with them. Sometimes, the ottocinclus join in too. I want to show it too but my camera can not pick up the event at the level of light available (ambient light from the room light) that's when the best scenes of schooling occur.

Thank you because I recently got a dozen exclamation point rasbora. For a week they schooled so beautiful and this past week they are all splitting up and what I know now is shoaling. I thought it meant they were unhappy and was sure they would all die, lol. Now I realize they just aren't scared anymore. So I guess that's a good sign! 😁

I focused on plant/ant interaction for my thesis in biology. As an ant nerd, emergence is something Im interested in. I believe in most cases we would be more accurate to call swarming/schooling/shoaling/mumurations phenomenon "emergent behavior" rather than emergent intelligence. "Swarm intelligence" is a valid concept but most often we are impressed by observing a display of behavior rather than intelligence. The semantics of "intelligence" are very interesting.
@Fishtory

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter! When I was in school they didn't have a field of this study yet, but rather 2 or 3 professors around the country publishing things on ants and bees mostly. It has come a long way in 15 to 20 years, and I appreciate you chiming in. Because I'm sure that I am behind the times with terminology and details. Thank you

I wanted some neons schooling around in my 100g with my opaline gouramies. Neons are fine but now my opaline's went from front and center to all hiding in the corner like they're afraid of the little neons... maybe they think they are one large fish. Only thing that changed in the tank was the addition of the neons.

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 месяца назад
Slightly acidic, I'd use a Substrate like fluval stratum that will have some minerals and ph stabilizing elements, but won't leech ammonia as Amazonia aquasoil will. As for plants. Fine leaf, pearl weed, maybe some small crypt or bucephelandra, and then some floating plants to provide the cover and safety feeling for chili's. Ph 6.5-7.2 kh 3 gh 4 or so...temp 78-82f and 0 nitrates plus feeding color emhanced fish foods for best color of the fish and almond leaves or botanicals to sooth their tiny immune systems and slime coats

Starlings and many shore birds use emergent intelligence. I have allot of schooling behavior with Danios, White Clouds, and Harliquin Rasboros. Some times I've witnessed them all school together as a mixed group. I believe that flow can help create this behavior.

Wow alex, u seem to always be creating the perfect vids for me... the day i got my new endlers, u uploaded a fish unboxing, and this morning i googled how to make my ember tetras school better, got no good results, then this drops! Really helpful, definitely gonna try the food-tapping technique. I have 20 embers in my 29 gal, 8 tt shrimp, 10 rocket killies, 3calico bn's, 3 endlers, and a pair of apistogrammas, would adding more embers get them schooling more as well? Or another species, such as green neons or rummynoses? I don't rlly want to overstock (visually i mean, i have a large canister filter on it, so ammonia is fine). Thx heaps, great video!
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
Im so glad I could help! I recommend sticking with fellow peaceful tetras if you want another school. The tank you have is somewhat full, so i wouldn't go too crazy or the fish will get nervous when they go too close to the BN and apistos , so then theyll have to school around decor or open areas, and in that case i think reed tetras school best with ember tetras, kitty tetras are another option (Aquatic arts has a great deal on them usually. And youll get 15% off if its your first order using SECRETHISTORY15 , or if you're reordering SECRETHISTORY10 for 10% off everything- including clearance and sale section fish! But yeah i think 20 is enough to get a lot of shoaling and schooling when startled or hungry. ....or if the apistos scare them
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
Oh and if you can find them, somphongsi rasboras are great looking with ember tetras and will form tight schools randomly in thick vegetation, or groups of 10 or more (and they stay fairly small, unlike black neons or cardinals.
@caelanharamis5660
@caelanharamis5660 5 лет назад
😪 I looked at aquatic arts' website and they have practically every nano fish, crab and invert I've ever wanted... problem is I don't think they ship to Australia 😂. Cheers though! The embers did some great schooling today, maybe it's just that I don't watch them enough.

Have you noticed any unusual behaviour from lemon tetras? I had them years ago and they seemed more deliberate/analytical in their behaviour than a lot of other seemingly faster moving tetras. Maybe they were just sizing up my crappy scape.

I would add phoenix rasboras, chili rasboras, kabota aka lime green rasboras, green or blue neon tetras, reed tetras, ember tetras, toucano tetras, male endlers perhaps, danionellas, tinwini aka gold ring danios (they get a bit fatter than the other tiny fish).... and if you feel like you have enough filtration, and or plants taking care of water quality, then you could also do rummynose tetras (best schoolers out there), Pseudomugils (tiny rainbow fish), 2 striped golden dwarf barbs, clown killies (theyll stay way up top and shoal)....and then any other rasbora or tetra that is under an inch....and you can afford 8 or 9 of minimum. Personally, id go for like 12 ember tetras , or in this specific case.... 7 embers and 7 reed tetras (they school together like in my tank). Also blue axlerodi rasboras , hastatus corydoras, corydora habrosus, or corydora pygmaeus If you like activity in the lower section of the tank.. The smaller the fish (like chili or Phoenix rasboras) the more you can fit easily... and i would say with those super small "nano" or micro fish that 3 per gallon is fine in a well planted tank Let me know how it goes. Ps the only fish for aquariums that truly and naturally school in groups under a few hundred, are rummynose tetra (1 per gallon), ember tetras , reed tetras, somphongsi rasboras, corydora habrosus, neon tetras, silver tip tetras and black/blue/purple neon tetras and lastly lambchop rasboras...but all this last group grows much larger than the micro ones... so 1 or 1.5 per gallon is a good rule to stick to. Good luck, my friend
