I am the self proclaimed Estate Sale King. I have fully furnished 3 homes with Estate sale bargains. In fact, the green 1970s chopper was an estate sale find. Your observation of rude and obnoxious clowns is spot on. I don't believe I've ever scored anything for free though. Great work.

In my area of Ontario, estate sales are generally 2 days, first day full price, second day half price until noon then it's make a offer. When 4 o'clock hits generally everything left over is put on the front lawn with free signs.

Nice haul. That furniture is fine. That "Video Editor" is an 8mm Film Viewer/Editor/Splicer. A movie buff might be interested in buying that. It's not worth a lot, but it will sell on Ebay, if you use the right keywords film, movie, movie equipment, film making gear, etc.

Oh yeah ...an estate sale took place across the road from me. People started 'camping out' in their vehicles the evening before. They continued arriving throughout the night. Cigarette butts, prepackaged snack wrappers, convenient store beverage containers...left all up and down the road edges. Trashy people, thinking they're gonna get the jump on a super deal.

Congrats on the haul! Unfortunately here in Brazil there are stores buying and selling that kind of stuff, so no chance of getting things like that for free (or even for cheap, I think).

Two stories. First, I live in Perth, Western Australia. Furnished our home with custom made (for the original owner) jarrah dining table with 8 chairs, jarrah framed lounge suite and another lounge suite, leather with two recliner rockers. (Jarrah , a native timber can no longer be logged) All high quality, at low prices, because the owners wanted a new decor. Next story, went for gelato, I noticed the woman customer before us was extremely rude, no basic manners & pushy. I pointed this out to my wife, to make sure we said & did all the right things. Our cones were topped with very generous servings of gelato!

All 3 of those lamps are cool. A cheap rattle can (flat black would be my choice) paint job on those faux brass lamps would give them a modern touch. Kindness goes a long way.

Free furniture here in Australia is everywhere on marketplace. everything you could imagine.

Id argue that getting something used that has value to you at a price you feel is good is just as satisfying if nit more than getting something brand new. Adding a little elbow grease to it makes it even better. Im trying to teach my sons that now. Its all about finding happiness where you can.

Your ordeal with looking at the estate sale reminds me of the recent fun I had looking for a decent tube tv. Back when tube tv's were phased out you could find them everywhere because nobody wanted them anymore. Now any good model tv from the era is going for big money. I've actually found a couple really nice ones for free in the area. The main down side was the size of them as one was a huge console tv and the other was a massive projection tv. We don't have the room for something like that. Music cd's on the other hand aren't too badly priced. There weren't many houses selling cd's but between two of them I got six of them for $6 when we went yard sale-ing. Some may consider it a bad deal but for my area I think a $1 per cd is acceptable if it's a band and album you really like. Anything higher than $1 is too much imo. It's kind of sad to see people getting rid of their cd's for the convenience of digital which will come to bite them in the end. But it's good for me because I can get a deal on cd's I either never had or lost over the years. :)

End of the school year in college towns, always a great way to dumpster dive/curb deals, for just about anything.

Next estate sale, go after all the household supplies. Soap, detergent , cleaners, kitchen supplies. We usually get ours for $1-$2 per item that retail for $5-$8. We even go after the paper towels and pay 1/2 or less regular price. Brake clean, $1 a can etc. Shampoo, $1 a bottle. Course I am talking full or nearly full items only

I would add ball bearing slide tracks to the dresser for rigidity and smoothness

And if you're not too bothered about it, side-of-the-road furniture's a good source too, sure some of it could be better used as firewood than furniture, but, when times are tight, gotta mend and make do, I grew up with the majority of my things being used, 2nd hand, salvaged, etc., so I'm not too bothered about things like that... :)

I've never understood how you guys make a living. You guys have moved a lot so I wondered if you were buying, fixing up and selling for profit? I know you guys live frugally, but I'm not sure if that's by choice or by necessity? I've also heard you say something about rental or investment properties? So I'm not sure if you make money by rentals? Shedding some light on some of these things would satisfy a lot of curiosities and help to understand you guys better.

That is a splicer for 8mm movie film. Actual motion pictures, (home movies) not magnetic tape. It is for Standard 8mm (not Super 8).

Not only did they spend several days dealing with angry people trying to scam them, if its an estate sale they could have also likely just lost family members and are dealing with that as well. They'd probably be real happy to get nice people through there.

The thing to remember about Estate sales, and the thing most people forget is: The family has already taken the things they actually care about. Everything else is stuff no one in the family wants (usually) Their goal is to simply get rid of EVERYTHING, and make as much money as possible while doing it. The fools show up early, and pay too much for the really good stuff. Let them have it. Always go on the last day. Very often you will find some decent stuff for cheap or even free as you discovered.

There's millions of dollars of furniture sitting at the curbsides outside every house in Florida at the moment.
