Hey Kyle, yes ISci is the best!! What made you interested in neuroscience and pharmaco :) Happy to recommend some profs to be your Isci integration mentor from either the neuro side or the pharmaco side! As well as some courses (10/10 300 level Pharmaco is SO interesting, and Dr. Steven Barnes' Psych classes esp the one that covered psychiatric disorders was so interesting that I actually looked forward to studying!)

@@ShannaYeung i took a psyc course, psyc 102 if ur familiar, on a whim in my 2nd term (bc i needed to replace a course that i dropped haha) and i ended up LOVING it and i grew curious abt the brain :) im honestly thinking of what integrations to do with neurosci and pharmaco was one on my list haha. and i would love some mentor recs/ course recs especially on the neurosci side😭 2nd yr specialization apps opened literally today and coming across ur video yesterday sort of gave me confirmation to carry thru w isci. 😊❤

Hey Kyle, when are the ISCI proposals due this year? I'll try to make a video on making the ISCI application before then. Try out PCTH 201 in 2nd year - it's 1 semester sampler of the third year pharmaco class. It's covers some of the same content and is taught by the same pharmaco program profs. Psyc 102 is great - you'll need to take Psyc 101 to be eligible to take PSYC 300 level courses. I loved PSYC 304 with Dr. Barnes. I had Dr. Luke Clarke for psyc 101 or 102. Both are fantastic professors so possibly great mentors. One of my friends is a Psych course TA so do you have questions about what any particular psych courses are like? She would be best at answering these maybe in a video.

@@ShannaYeung Hi! For incoming 2nd year isci students, they're not due until like 2021 (I think) but for those who just completed 2nd year, they were due in April. A proposal video would be amazing though! That aspect of ISci seems very intimidating haha. And noted with Psyc 101! I didn't know you needed it to do 3rd yr level psyc courses, thank you! As for psyc courses, I guess I really loved the emphasis on the clinical side of psych in psyc 102, so similar courses would be great! Gosh, I didnt expect to be helped out so much! u didn't need to respond at all but I rly appreciate it!

Don't let anyone tell you you're too young to know what you want in life -- it's great to find what you love early so you can get ahead working towards the career of your dreams!! Let me know if there's any content you want to see that I can make to support your journey. :) PS I'm going to release a video for staying determined to do med soon so stay tuned! -- spoiler is it's a long road from high school to becoming a physician but I think it's so worth it!

Please ask any questions you have in the comments of any videos instead of DMing me on Instagram. I love your questions but this is more efficient. Some of the same questions are asked so asking your question here helps others. I also want to be publicly accountable for some of my replies so anyone can correct me if there are inaccuracies. (I'm also on hiatus until July 4th and will get back to answering questions after then!). Happy studying

Hey Shanna, Thanks for the video. We are in the US on a visa and my daughter is doing her “pre-medical” college in a university here in US with Biology as major. We plan to move to Canada this coming academic year. Does UBC offer Pre-med? If yes, could you please provide me the details? Thanks.

Thank you so much for the video, it really helped me organize my thoughts and figure what I would need to do. I'll be going to UBC for sciences this coming September! I am very confused on how to register and make my own timetable but I think ill figure it out eventually. 1. What I want to ask is, what courses should I take to build a good foundation for the second year and so on? 2. I want to go into the CAPs program but I know its a very competitive program and I am not a VERY SMART person. What other programs do you think would be good for applying to med? 3. And also, what kind of extracurriculars did you do and how did you get involved in it? 4. What good study places do you recommend in Vancouver? As I live in an Asian household, things can get pretty chaotic sometimes haha. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :))

1 and 2 and 3 - I have videos on these in my channel eg the video called which UBC Undergrad courses to take, and several videos on extracurriculars. let me know if you have additional questions after watching them :) 4. When I was at UBC, I loved Woodward’s library, the life science building and Irving library.

This video really helped me! Thank you so much! I just have a question. I’m a grade 11 student who taken Biology 30 AP and I must say that my biology 30 grade is not doing too good right now. I really want to get into UBC as it is my dream university. I plan on taking pharmaceutical sciences as my degree but am worried about my biology grade and how it may affect if I were to get accepted or not. I am also talking chemistry and physics 30 but only until I’m grade 12. Since I am grade 11, I am able to redo biology 30 and potentially get a high grade. Do you recommend redoing it or not to worry to much about my biology grade as UBC may look into my chemistry and physics grades.
@ShannaYeung
@ShannaYeung 3 года назад
Hi Patricia, so I'm based in BC - can I guess that Biology 30 is equivalent what we call Biology 11 in BC. If it's bio 11, I don't think you need to re-take it if your chem grade 11 and physics grade 11 are really good. That's just my opinion that may or may not be correct!

Hi Thank you so much for providing an opportunity to answer our questions. I am 19 years old, I am Iranian and this year I will enter university in my own country. But I plan to immigrate to Canada in 3-4 years and continue my studies in medicine there in canada, I wanted to know 1)if I submit an evaluation of my exchange transcript by World Education Service (WES) for my bachelor's degree when I apply, Does this mean I have a lower chance of being accepted than those who did pre-medical in Canada? 2)Do I have to take any other exam to have my degree approved by your university? 3)What should I do about extracurricular activities when I'm not in Canada during my 4 years of undergraduate studies? 4)And which field should I study to have the best match to the pre-med undergraduate degree? Can I study Laboratory science, physiotherapy, radiology or psychology and any other paramedical discipline? Btw I have PR card until then Thanks for answering.

I'm not clear on the answers to your first questions and recommend reaching out directly to our Med school admissions office. Sorry I wish I could be more helpful! I would guess (my own speculation) that extracurriculars done in another country are just as good as extracurriculars done in Canada.

Hi, thank you for your video. I have a request. My daughter is in grade 11 and wants to become a pharmacist. I am looking for chemistry test extra practice resources. Sometimes, her teacher teaches university level chemistry lessons and there are some tests related to those lessons. I would appreciate it if you could give me some information about good resources.

I am currently in Nursing School in BC and I have a dream to go to Med School one day! In my program we have to take A & P, and patho, English courses plus loads of clinical and practicum hours. Do you think it is possible to go to med school with a bachelor in Science of Nursing degree (plus taking a year of other MCAT pre-req courses)? I feel like there is a lot of stigma around this path, and although I have heard of quite a few nurses who have gone to Med School, I find that it is not very widely talked about.
@ShannaYeung
@ShannaYeung 3 года назад
There are at least 3 former nurses in my medical school class that are highly knowledgable and awesome people. I personally have found that people in medicine are receptive to former nurses! (that's just my experience so this may not be the same as everyone else's experience!)
@tokee1234567

There's some stigma among nurses. I heard some med schools in the US don't like former nurses with experience but there's less of that here. I took prereqs for med school but it was definitely not easy with our shift work-life and you always feel bad for not picking up enough shifts

Which canadian medschool accept GED diploma as a highschool degree and do they really accept or not!
@ShannaYeung
@ShannaYeung 3 года назад
Medical schools in Canada besides the Quarms program require an undergraduate university degree first, so I imagine that if you use a GED to get a bachelor's, then whether you had a ged or not may not matter. I'm not knowledgeable about this unfortunately so I would suggest contacting the medical school or university you're interested in for details.

Please am a high school graduate and currently doing my application process to UBC and I want to study medicine. I can’t see it at program choice aspect of the application, I only saw bachelor of science and bachelor of applied biology. Can you brief me on the bachelors that I need to choose in order to do medicine at UBC
@ShannaYeung

You can’t apply to medicine straight from high school in Canada. You need to complete a Bachelor’s such as Bachelor of Science, before applying to medicine.

Do I need to complete all three sciences gr 11 to gr12? I've taken Chem 12 and Bio 12 but not Physics 12, and im worried this might bite me in the future I noticed on the biochemistry website that if I didn't complete Physics 12 I would need to take Phys 100 as a class. I don't know what this means to be honest 😭 would it be a great disadvantage if I didnt take Physics 12?
@ShannaYeung
@ShannaYeung 2 года назад
If you don't take physics 12, then you have to take the university equivalent of physics 12 which is phys 100 at UBC. If you're in Grade 12, you could consider taking Physics 12 in online summer school or the adult education centre over the summer - purely to save yourself the tuition costs of taking phys 100.
