I stood in a river for three hours in freezing temperatures to shoot this waterfall. What I saw were incredible fall tree colors, great mood in the sky, and silky smooth water. But what I got in my RAW file was a flat muddy mess.
Flat lighting can do that to your fall color photos, but you can use Photoshop and luminosity masks to restore the brilliant color and mood you experienced when you took the shot. Learn how in this extended tutorial.

This is my favorite tutorial you've done. Usually I have to keep rewinding and watch parts over and over, but this one made a lot of sense to me. I guess that's partly because I'm getting better and more familiar with Lumenzia but I also think you're videos keep improving too. Thanks a ton! 👍👍

Great to hear. I think that says a lot about how much your skills have developed. This was a pretty complex edit and moved fairly quickly.

Thank you Greg, you are a beautiful soul for doing what you do. I struggled a lot with luminosity masks and how to properly apply it. This tutorial has to be one of my all time favorites ! Very well done and composed. Your work is exceptional and lumenzia is an absolute gem. Thank you Greg

It does beg the question why Adobe hasn't designed/programmed PS to have simplistic tools like Greg offers. Well done !

another cracking tutorial greg, thanks once again. i am the same as you when adjusting the flow/opacity of the brushes, using the pen. i now select the flow/opacity options, then use the right or left arrow keys to adjust to my preferred level. saves quite a bit frustration when using the pen.

This was a good vid.....really just tells me how little I know, it's the small details that make the difference. Will need to put this on view again, and again.... Thanks Greg

@@gregbenzphotography Wow a quick reply. Also Nick Page’s reviews/demos of Lumenzia have helped me decide amongst the different panels. Does your panel come with any specific introductory tutorials. Watching all the videos gives a good idea about workflow, but how to use the specific panel tools would be helpful.

Lumenzia has about 3 hours of tutorials that cover its features generally. Good if you know luminosity masks. If you don’t, I highly recommend my 2 Master Courses that go deep on the best uses of luminosity masks (includes RAW files, written tutorials, etc - much more than just videos).

This really helps me. When you can visually see how you get there is great. Always surprised at how many adjustments you can put on top of each other(layers). Through the whole video I keep repeating "I didn't know you could do that". Michigan color is great this year. I have many Upper Peninsula pics to go through. THANK YOU!

I need to shoot the UP some year. Looked at it last minute this year, totally booked anywhere in MN, WI, and MI near the lakes. Not a single property open for a week+. Never seen it like that, crazy year.

Great tutorial Greg. I wished I was a masking Ninja like you. I'm about a green belt. I would have done a lot of what you did in PS, using range masks in LR. I think it would get close to your results but without the same level of control and finesse. Keep making these tutorials and maybe you'll make me into a Ninja. Maybe you should start a paid subscription service where members can work on the same files as you....and have access to other more specialized tutorials.....

Thanks, Derrick. I’d love to do that some day. As my time is split with software development and also shooting, I don’t know that I’d be able to keep up with the pace needed / expected for a subscription at this point. I do have a couple of very in-depth Master Courses which include RAW files and lots of both written and video content. gregbenzphotography.com/store

This was really good, but also I seem to be seeing you approach Lumenzia a little different than before in terms of workflow? My understanding was that you picked a luminosity mask first and then chose a modifier (Brightness/Contrast, Curves etc), but here we saw you do the reverse often, choosing a modifier first and then a mask to work with it after the fact. Interesting.
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 3 года назад
I use both workflows. However, my mentality is always adjustment first. The masks and selections are only a way of targeting, so you need to know where you are taking the adjustment. If you create the adjustment first, just make sure it does not factor into the mask/selection (ie, those should come from the existing state of the image in nearly all cases).

Greg, Great use of layers to bring out this raw file. Why did you choose to operate from single raw rather than multiple exposures? For example a higher ISO in your base photo might have given you brighter water and shadows to start with. You could have then varied shutter speed (or potentially ISO) to get darker exposure in the sky.....
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 3 года назад
I use both approaches (single and multiple RAW). Just depends on the needs of a given image. Single is simpler to blend, multiple may offer more flexibility such as you need noted or increased shadow detail, etc.

One Question. At minute 18:00 when you start the dodging, why use the "solid fill" instead of any one of the others options!? Could use some help to figure out the diferences.
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 3 года назад
Mostly habit there. I use it a lot in general to let me change after the fact, but not something I would need when working with white. Painting white on the 50% gray or transparent options would have done the same.
