You remind me a lot of my dad, and I learned a lot from him about body movement confidence. Men his age thought he was odd for constantly squatting, stretching, moving around and ducking obstacles as if here some kid. He'd play all sorts of games with us on monkey bars at the playground. Now that I'm 49 and have utilized his mindset in my everyday movement, and see men my age move as if they were 60-80, I appreciate my dad even more.

Uncomplicated advice.......agree completely. I'm 67, and for the past 18 months have been strict about daily activity, regular weight training, 8 hours sleep, eating clean, and intermittent fasting. I feel the best I've felt in years. I also have pretty much given up alcohol, saving it for very special occasions.

Thank you for this. I've gone through many cycles in my life of being in better shape and not so great of shape. Currently, and for the past year or so I've been stuck in one of my lows of not great shape, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I usually struggle with having to figure out a workout routine, diet, or finding a motivation factor. After watching this though, I realize that "just moving" is much easier pill to swallow and feel like that just might be the simple mantra to help me start heading back up, instead of down, on my journey. Today is a new day. Thanks again.

I sometimes walk with my wife along a ledge of some sort like a parking block for example. It surprises me how easily a little thing like this can turn the brain on and it usually leads to doing other types of physical practices.

I am exactly the same. My general strategy is to make it almost impossible to not move. No equipment, no gym, just pushups when you can, pull yourself up on anything that's sturdy enough. As another person said, walk on weird things or climb the stairs differently each time. Even if you don't get in great shape the movement is good for that foggy noggin.

This is so spot on! What I would add is to accept the process and keep it simple. I was super unfit and when I started getting fit I didn‘t have a morning routine, I hated the gym, I ate things I didn‘t really wanna eat, I didn‘t journal, all things that I‘ve changed now by listening to myself more. I don‘t have to lift weights in the gym if I like calisthenics better. But I had to give myself time to adjust, to try things out, to develop them into habits. I‘d say hold yourself accountable but accept yourself (this correlates with your no 5). I used to beat myself up over what I can’t do but I’m working on acknowledging the achievements and prepare for the next. I used to hate moving because I would get out of breath and feel awful so fast. Focusing on movement strength and endurance really got me into fitness. I couldn’t do it just for the looks or just for others. That isn’t a strong enough why for me. My why is moving my body.

Just want to say I think your opinion on this is great. I’m someone whose been influenced by ideas from ido portal and similar characters; with the idea that you should move because you can and it’ll make you feel good. I find it refreshing and assuring to strip back fitness to the basics: practice for longevity of movement and to improve how you feel in your body.

For someone who's hooked into having a healthy, active and fun lifestyle.. since 9 months.. and lost around 95 pounds.. this is so right.. i started as a normal gym boy.. i met some interesting people who came to the gym like 2 or 3 days in a week but kept getting healthier and fitter.. i spoke to them and joined the group or cult lol .. we do lotssa different things every week.. Mondays HIIT Tuesday and Wednesday full body weight training.. Thursday we all meet at a park and walk or have fun at those pull up bars 😀 Sunday usually long runs or trekking.. we keep mixing it up.. sometimes it's just a group dance session lol.. every week we appoint a new leader.. and it's his/her final decision to plan it up.. Yes eating healthy and intermittent fasting helps a lot !! Do it for fun.. do it with love !! You'll never quit.. Cheers !!

I've recently started time restricted eating. It's singlehandedly one of the best personal decisions I've made in years. There's a ton of science out there that supports doing this. And it's less about losing weight, and more about getting your body to adapt to using it's stores of energy, while regulating you blood sugar levels. I know the progress I've made in losing fat will plateau at some point, but in the first month, without changing anything else about my diet - I've lost a lot of fat off my body. And the interesting thing is I'm still at the same weight. Screw gyms. Just get moving, do bodyweight exercises. Love you future self enough to invest in you present self. I really love this channel. Stop bogging yourself down with too much information, focus on high level strategies to tackle whatever you need to tackle. Whatever you do, just start doing it. Be patient. The main benefit of time-restricted eating is that it gives your body a longer physiological rest period each day, so more&deeper cleaning and repair so that you make progress on that each day rather than getting more toxic and broken each day.

Hey Josh! Really great video again, mate. It hits the nail. To me, a great inspiration is also the philosophy of Georges Hébert, "méthode naturelle". He said all these things also an had a motto: "be strong to be useful". He divided eight fitness dimensions: walk, run, jump, climb, lift, throw, balancing, self defence, swim and quadrupedal movement. This french pioneer lived from 1875 to 1975 and was the role model of Parkour and MovNat. Cheers from Germany, Norman

Excellent video. A huge YES to every point. I'd like to add to it too, learn to breathe properly as well as practice deep breaths. I do the Wim Hof 11 minutes every day and it has drastically helped my training, sleeping, and mental focus. Along with the 5 points in this video, and good eating, you can't lose.

This video has completely changed my perspective on exercise. I have forwarded it to so many of my friends. Shifting the dynamic from aesthetic goals to performance goals is genius. It's discouraging when you aren't seeing your stomach flatten or arms get bigger, but being able to objectively measure that you are stronger or faster is a game changer. I started watching your videos yesterday to add more effective stretching and calisthenics into my workouts and it's absolute fate that you posted this the day after. Thank you for sharing what you do.

I don't even own a scale. I think weight is a bit of a useless metric. I recently dropped 30 lbs over a 2 year period and a barely weighed myself, maybe only monthly. Instead of focusing on my weight daily I focused on my "performance metrics" (run times, weight lifted in the gym) and those were more positive and motivating for me. The personal weight loss was simply bonus.

One of the biggest things that has set me on better results is being mindful of how I feel and reacting accordingly. If I'm too tired, I take an extra rest day. I used to keep going until burnout set in. If I rest instead of workout today, I make it a point to make it up the next day. Like you mentioned I have tried to limit and control my negative self talk. I am better each day, I am stronger, I am healthier. If I haven't hit the goal I wanted today, there is always tomorrow and I'm one step closer for trying. Switching from feeling obligated to hit a scheduled workout to really analyzing how I feel and reacting accordingly has been great for consistency. A good friend from work always says "the best diet or workout routine is the one you will stick with" I've kept that with me and it's helped.

Josh, so good! This is a goldmine and even though these are 'simple tips' I think they go super deep in life and movement. I am doing my best to incorporate this philosophy but feel I'm only scratching the surface. Thanks for the inspo! Along the lines of doing what you love, I might add: train for a specific sport, something you love. For me, it's surfing. And to the part about representing values: feeling good in my body&mind = feeling happy. connect movement/health/fitness values to a bigger purpose. I come back to things like energy for my day to be productive work-wise, longevity and being free of disease so I can be healthy for people I care about, and cultivating mastery, which affects all other areas of life.

I would add, "give yourself runway" for the transformation goals. Meaning there will be good weeks and bad weeks in your transformation (more progress and less progress) so don't get frustrated. Health transformation takes time and we want to aim for sustainable habits, mentally and emotionally sustainable especially.

@@annomaly751 talking from experience. I lost 30 lbs but gave myself 2 years. My goal was to lose just 2 lbs per month and keep it off. I didn't want to set unrealistic goals and get discouraged. Felt good to buy new clothes at the end of the process!

All that you've said in these few minutes makes perfect sense. I see it as taking a few steps back from the tree to see the forest. My home is up a steep gravel drive that's around 600 feet long. The mailbox is at the bottom by the road. I make use of that by fast-walking 5 or more laps up and down the drive, and pick up the mail on the last lap.

I love this philosophy.....I train specifically for basketball and aim to add pieces to my game.....so every thing is with the intent to improve my game...Im in 40s and able to run with 20 year olds......I love the challenge and my training is centered around being a better athlete not an aesthetic goal....I love this mindset and makes training fun and not a chore

I am 26 and I’ve recently suffered from anxiety induced weakness/ jelly legs the past month and it’s been awful. This is how I found your channel, trying to reduce anxiety and now I truly appreciate the small things like a walk. Before I only worked out in the gym and then I was pretty much sedentary.

This one is great! I come from a background in Rugby and Powerlifting. I recently started climbing and I love all the subtle shifts in power and flexibility. My body feels way more complete because of the diverse range I'm working on like agility, balance, power and cardio (jumping rope). I always loved the animalistic movement patterns, I implement them in my warm ups before a climbing session. Also becoming a father in July and can't wait to play with my kid and showing all these movements that come so naturally to our bodies. Your channel helps me a lot to transform my body from a brute force only type to a more balanced athletic oiled machine. 🙏

In 5 weeks I drop 12 kg. Just by walking to work three times a week!.. my focus is just have fun! …music walk get in the grove! I don’t feel old inside….Hell, I’m not going to show outside! Hey there just want to say the more i watch the more i enjoy , your psychology about us being human and what we are capable of physically is on the mark , thank you so very much , i've taken lots of what you've said and shown into practice esp. stretching and movements i have bad knees so i thought i couldn't squat but after watching your videos i found a way , im 61 survived a very serious car accident 12 yrs ago come June , crushed 2 vertebrae C5 C6 also had Amnesia for 10 days ,my car rolled 3 times no drugs or alcohol involved recovering has been a long slow process especially regaining focus of my mind i found a path , the meds might be able to repair you But have little to no idea on how to help you recover its drugs always to mask the problems not fix the causes , keeping positive and avoiding negative people has been the key , im only 1 of 5 in 100 that is still able to use my arms and legs i can walk but can not run yet but im getting there , i thought i was quite healthy having not had the flu or cold in over 25yrs about 5 months ago i started to become insulin resistant due to a lack of activity and way too many Carbs were behind this happening ,without the medical professions help ive gone on to Keto and dropped 15kgs in 4 months all i included with my correct & drastic diet change is a walk that used to take 20 minutes now takes 10 and then to the beach an easy 5 minute drive away its shirt off in the car park to get the morning sun and Vitamin D i use my swims as a workout ,my waist has reduced 4 inches way more to follow Keep up you awesome YT channel im grateful cheers

Great advice, as usual. I might add to the "embrace your human abilities" by saying that you should never think you can't do something. If all you can do is hang from a bar for 10 seconds.....hang from a bar for 10 seconds. Next time, do it a bit longer.

I've been intermittent fasting for about 4 years now. I started Parkour training 2 years ago. At 67 years old, I regularly do many of the exercises in this video because -- Parkour trains your entire body to do a variety of movements: running, jumping, climbing, vaulting, diving, swinging, rolling, and if you're up for it (I'm not), flipping. I don't eat a lot, and try to cut back on the sugar (although I do backslide a lot). Oh, yes, and I also dance. Unfortunately, I don't get the sleep I'd like -- I suffer from some sort of insomnia (old age, I guess). But, overall, I'm in pretty good shape and absolutely love my life. I think I'm pretty much in line with these 5 rules (working on the sleep one), and I can attest they will help improve your health and life.

Nice. Avoid things that hurt. I messed myself up powerlifting because I was stubborn and kept training through injury. Wish I had gone the kung fu monk route instead.

Glad to see this info. My Master Chief, a Navy SEAL, who specialized in human performance was big on functional movement. What you show on this video is basically how he started us off to "warm up" before the big stuff he had planned for us. I didn't see the value in it at first, but over time I saw the difference in my body, but particular in my movement and what I was able to do than if I was just lifting. I'm emmencely grateful and am going to get back to this immediately!!

just remember that achieving your goals is solely dependent on your mindset. i don't care how out of shape somebody is, if they can bring a determined and positive mindset to their nutrition and training, they will achieve any goal they set themselves.

For me, it comes down to years of consistent effort and continuous tiny improvement, all while keeping a long-term vision in mind. Having a ten-year plan and an unwavering motivation to achieve it no matter the obstacles, is key.

this is a fabulous video. Watching it... I kinda realized this is what I've been doing all along.. just using my body - carrying heavy stuff up and down stairs, challenging balance, challenging coordination (I randomly walk backwards while on walks)... random stretching... random squatting... pop a random push up...throwing in a rebounding session here and there. Long walks. Lifting heavy stuff over my head. I've been doing IF for years now. great video.. thank you

This is TRUE body acceptance here. Not the crap put on social media explaining its ok to be what you see, but that its ok to enjoy life and be active. Sedentary lifestyle, always laying down or in a chair is what is killing us slowly.

Fabulous message! To your point, right now I am training to do pull ups at the Marine's booth at the MN State Fair. Training every other day for the last 6 months using RU-vid videos for reference. On the days in between I start the day with a 3 mile walk or 2 mile jog then either garden or mow the lawn, ( 8000 steps ). There are 16 hours a day that we are awake, so increase your activity to help keep yourself in good shape and health. It's not just about three 1/2 hour sessions in the gym. I'm 66 years old, 5'9, weigh 167 pounds. I'm working on loosing the two pounds I've gained since graduating from college. Can't do anything about the inch and 1/2 I have lost in height!

This is amazing advice. I regularly do push ups, squats, even have an ab wheel at my work desk. People sometimes look at me weird, I even had an upper level manager come out of her office when visiting when she saw me doing them (she thought I fell) cause I don't just want to stand still.

Fully agree ! I would add accept that you are not a robot. Some days, some weeks you won't be as good as usual. You won't do the muscle up you usually do or any other movement...It's normal. Sometimes, your body needs something else and you don't realize it. Just follow your rythm.
