I spent years pulling my 1.7 up and I'm finally at a 3.3. Still I feel like its not enough. I just wanna get in somewhere, I don't even care if it's MD or DO, I just wanna be a medical doctor.
SO inspiring. as someone that had a ROUGH undergrad experience after having a stroke, i thought i would never be able to accomplish my dreams. i had no idea about the special masters programs - definitely going to look into this!
Thank you for being an inspirational. You made the majority of us that being "Not Perfect is ok". You will be a great doctor! Good Luck and God be with you.
Dude I needed this. I'm a nursing major...HORRIBLE community college GPA (I raised it from a 1.6 to a 2.1 when I went back) couldn't get into the ADN program. Went to a tech school and graduated with technical honors as an LPN. My next goal is ADN. After that...I was planning on taking the rest of my AA Medical Transfer classes at community college and then transferring to a Uni to take pre-med courses. I would hope that could give me a shot...but we will see. Hopefully my University Pre Med classes will have a large impact. Aiming for straight As.
The problem with getting into Med school is the damn ranking system. They need to eliminate it so Med schools stop worrying so much on it. It’s not imposible to do either. It’s been done in other areas of academics. It’s become this invisible wall even for people with good metrics. It’s ridiculous.
I love how this video came up in my recommendations and I am applying for a biomedical science masters program this week haha. I’m so nervous! Good luck with your journey to becoming a doctor!
I just wanna say that med school do care about the amount of times you take the MCAT. Here where I live (in Puerto Rico) there’s only four medical school you can attend, and from those four, two won’t accept you if you take the MCAT more than three times. And the other two don’t care but lowkey I feel like they do as well. So I want to take it only one time and if I get more than 500 I’m not retaking it, only if I get something below that. So I recommend checking if the med school you want to attend has a limit of MCAT takes just in case.
Claudia Lescano i assume all schools are different but at my school there is no hard cut off. The have published that a 3.0 is a “competitive” gpa. There is, however, no minimum. Hope this helps.
Michael, I had the worst morning just basically panicking about my future man. This video truly motivated me because you were talking about me, I want it more than anything, I am that underdog student that is going to get it. Thank you so much bro I'm gonna go hit the books, please update and post more. If you could do a video about volunteer work and clinical hours that would be tremendously helpful. Thanks again.
Where was the information a couple of years ago!!?? Everything was sooo perfect and applicable to my life! I’m preparing for medical school 💪🏾#grit#persistence#determination
Just graduated with a 2.2 gpa... going to go back to college to achieve a 3.0 gpa to get accepted to PCOMs biomedical sciences program. Hopefully will be in medical school before I am 30
I have a 3.5 gpa right now in high school. But my plan is to really turn it up in college and become a nerd for the most part. Especially if I wanna get into med school.
I'm so scared I won't be able to achieve my dreams. My situation is a bit different. Life really threw some curveballs and I feel it put me at an unfair disadvantage. Help 😭
I graduated with a 2.7. Bachelor’s in criminal justice. Joined the military right after. 5 years later I am back in school because I am now sure I want to pursue a career in medicine. I’m about to start my 3rd class at this new school. My question is, would my previous 2.7 GPA get combined with my new GPA?
I want to say it would just because it’s still undergrad level but I’m honestly not sure. I’d contact the admissions counselor at the school and double check.
Age should never be a factors I'm in my masters and in 26 took 2 year between my undergrad and master's with clinical experience of my previous undergrad. That only can give you the edge in med school. Here in Canada it's highly competitive of 3.9 and if you take a master's you'll need a 3.0 which is perfect. And like myself i am not sure in USA but here in Canada we have french and English med school. Which I am bilingual so this can help me
Any masters gpa will be considered a graduate level gpa however when you do a special masters program all of your courses are very similar to courses you would take in medical school which gives the medical schools a good idea of how prepared you are.
Thanks for the video bro. Would you mind giving me your opinion on my situation? So I went to community college for like 6 years and I initially studied political science before shifting to biology. I was working full time throughout CC so I performed very poorly as a result. I disappointingly earned a few Ws, F’s, and Cs because of I studied for these science classes as I would my poli sci classes and it showed. What saved me and allowed to transfer to a University was getting Bs in the calculus, chemistry, and physics series. After one year at the university, I have a 3.7 gpa In my molecular bio major courses and plan on increasing it even more! I feel I was always a good student, but once I transferred I stopped working and felt rejunivated not seeing the same folks and seeing the same ol’ stuff in my hometown. If I manage to keep my University (not CC) gpa at around 3-7-3.8, would you recommend I pursue a postbac or should I pursue a special masters? My undergraduate science gpa would average out to be around a 2.7 (because of community college) and my total undergraduate gpa would average out to about a 3.1. I am self aware and definitely wouldn’t mind DO schools. Of course I’d prefer the MD option but DO would be amazing as well.
Good luck to you on your journey. I am in the middle of mine and trying to become a physician after several years as an ER RN. I could literally cry with frustration, but will not give up.
Hey nice video. I have two questions for you. 1. Based on your experience so far what’s the oldest age you would recommend applying to medical school at? 2. What were your MCAT scores the first and second time you took it if you don’t mind me asking?
Hey Michael, I graduated in December 2019. I wanted to know what you think are good ways to achieve letters of recommendation... I didn't have the best relationship with my teachers, mostly due to very large classes. Thanks!
That’s a tough one. You need two from science professors. I honestly would pick the two where you got your best grades and maybe send them a resume. They are used to being asked. Unfortunately, if you’ve had zero contact with them, then your letters won’t really be super personal or helpful, but it is what it is. Check those boxes off.
Hi Michael, I currently have a 3.53 gpa overall. I just graduated from undergrad and I was wondering would it be in my best interest to go into post-bacc studies? Or should I just go forward and take the MCAT?
Take the mcat (check out mcatselfprep.com) we have a discount code down below. Your gpa is perfectly fine. Make sure your science gpa is decent as well (above a 3.3)
I have a 3.7 but there are situations at the moment so I couldn’t take my mcat yet! So I’m planning to take a gap year! Do you think I should do smp or what should I do during my gap year!? I’m a little lost at what to do with this time 🥲
