i would love to see something about the mental journey of speedrunning, how theoretically getting good at something is the same every time, just broken apart into different sections of practice and stuff. so maybe once you've learned to speedrun something, it gets a lot easier to learn to speedrun something else. idk if that made any sense.

Simp, can you talk about some easy ways to get some capturing methods going? I got a top 30 time in Banjo Kazooie but couldn’t get on the leader board because I didn’t have any idea on how to capture gameplay. Thx dawg.

I'll probably buy a n64 for cheap and i would like to see some ways to capture my footage because i have no idea how

I would love to see something on getting started as far as equipment is concerned. Ive been putting off making a Twitch channel for a couple years now, and since I casually speedrun a few games, I need something that can capture a whole run as opposed to recording IL's on my crappy phone lol. Loving the videos bro, keep up the good work!

Dude it's like you explained all my speedrun career in 10 minutes, i started speedruning Resident Evil 4 in 2010 just for fun and because i was terrified by the game in my childhood and i wanted to overcome it, i managed to get all the way to a WR on ps2, then i moved to ps4 and i was still enjoying it. But lately i don't really feel motivated that much, especially because i thought my PB's were too good for me. Then i started looking at other's runs and got new strats and better PB's ect. Everything you said, i went through it and it motivated me to re-do runs (and even started learning sm64 70 stars) so thank you for that video!

your point at 2:49 was huge for me. I've thought for a long time in learning things that just tackling the big issue first is better but it's simply not the case in this sense. You need to accomplish things right out of your level at a frequent pace because you get so much more progress and accomplishment so much more frequently that it actually boosts your learning speed and enjoyment by a ton. *Huge* Thanks big simp

If you want to start speedrunning sm64, please please please start with 16 star. I can't tell you enough how much that helped me. I tried starting with 0 star, and I couldn't get SBLJ. 16 star has very simple to learn BLJS and it's sooooo much more chill. I felt happy running it because it's short, but contains a lot. My first run was one hour, my second was half an hour, and my third was 26 minutes. That's currently my PB. Do 16 star first fellas.

I really want to get into speedrunning, more precisely blindfolded. I don't know, I know it requires skill, but mostly technique and good memory. Your video gave me a little more inspiration... But not enough, yet, lol. Let's see what happens. I really want to start with a PS1 game from my childhood. Watching SM64 blindfolded told me it is possible to get to the end of a 3D game like the one I have in mind. Once again, thank you for your videos! Love them all!

Another thing that I've noticed that seems to work for runners with burnout issues, depending on the game you normally run, is trying something different but similar, like ROM hacks or "meme" categories like randomizer, nonstop, all signs, bingo, etc. When cheese was getting really irritated with the SM64 grind he started doing some ROM hacks here and there and it seems like he started getting more enjoyment out of the game again. It's a good way to keep getting some kind of practice in with the game mechanics, movement, etc. without necessarily doing the exact same route of 70 or 120 star over and over again. Keeps things fresh and engaging and teaches you a lot about the game and how it works in the process.

I am trying to get into speedrunning, and my tip is: Don't practice the same level/strategies for hours straight. If I practice the same thing over and over again, I will eventually get bored and I suddenly can't perform the trick I've learned if I've practiced it for too much. If I take a break from a specific level for like 1 hour and then come back, I perform better again. But that's just me.

Yeah. I can agree with what you said. I have speed ran a lot of games, some for a long time, some just for fun. I started with Mario 64 as well. I wasn’t using the best route, and didn’t really reset all that much. When I switched up the route, (this was before people started doing hmc late) I got a much better time. Over the next few months I started to get mad when I messed up a trick, which resulted me in taking a break from the game. I returned a few more times over the next year doing 16 star, I got what I wanted which was sub 20 and stopped. I started doing any percent for links awakening. It was fun for about a week before I stopped. I did two runs of a link to the past all dungeons. I really enjoy that game and the speed run, I just don’t have the time to sit down and actually complete a run of the game these days. I have picked up shovel knight on my ds and have been speed running that. All four of those games have been fun to speed run, and if you are considering picking up speed running for any game, I would have to tell you to have fun. Having fun is important during a speed run, if you’re not having fun, then you’re just wasting your time.

What you say around 7:50 for some reason made me realise that I don't like sm64 that much. I've played through it a few times, and I've had my fair share of annoyance at it. However, even more weirdly I realised that as I've recently started practicing for a (eventual) 70 star run (I'm playing it on switch, so unfortunately I couldn't start with a 16 star run), I suddenly love whomp's fortress. There's something satisfying about bounding around with little fear of going barrelling off of a cliff that a casual playstyle just couldn't give me. I don't like the game that much, but as a speed game it's pretty good (even if I am incapable of doing a single star with any consistency, much less the full game, but hey, that's what practice is for).

Speedrunning SM64 is something I do casually. For fun. Something I do when I don't really feel like doing anything else, or I just really get the urge to do a run. It's just really damn fun and I really enjoy seeing myself improve. I think the joy of self-improvement is the key here. Whether it's work, or an art, or even speedrunning, I think it's important to have something that you can keep improving at. It's good for the soul, or something cheesy like that. Of course, even so, my improvement has been very slow and I have barely submitted any runs, haha. A side note: I also started learning how to speedrun DKC2, mostly because it's another one of my favorite games, but also because it's a very chill, laid-back run compared to something like SM64. Anyway, great video Simply, love your content and you're easily my favorite SM64 runner. Congrats on your All Signs WR and your 120 PB!

@@SimplyN64 I played SM64 basically the last 3 years of the 90s, and the first 2-3 of the 2000s... I know there's such a slim chance that I would ever be able to get on a leaderboard for any category for super mario 64, and I really don't have the time at all to dedicate... but super mario 64 is my favorite game of all time so the passion is there. I need like, one hobby that isn't a physically active interest. My doctor told me that I'm 32 now and not 15 anymore and that I have to get more rest and let my body heal from hard days. I'm usually the person who is constantly in motion whether it be at work or my side gigs like fixing/improving/tuning cars for myself/family/friends/word of mouth customers, buying and selling (mostly tools anymore) on local CL/offerup/letgo/ebay/etc, game system modding (anti-piracy, btw), and building custom PCs with liquid/exotic cooling systems. All of this and a beautiful fiancee that I am incredibly lucky to have in my life because she said that it would be interesting to watch me improve and she'd be totally behind me using some of my rest time getting better at sm64. A total win-win. I have a pair of solid and clean N64 systems with all the cords and a controller with each getting delivered tomorrow.. All of the peripherals are original equipment and the controllers have already had high quality replacement sticks. The bundle comes with a copy of Goldeneye and 1080 snowboarding. I will trade both games locally for another controller or two, an expansion pack, or whatever is a good deal. I bought all of this stuff from a collector who is piecing out his stuff. We got into a great conversation about having both been through addiction, and a successful later recovery for us both, after a medical injury; it was really cool to talk to someone random about an experience that few people can share and then have that person give me a freaking delicious deal on the bundle ($110 with tax+shipping for both system bundles!) English sm64 comes Thursday/Friday and Japanese sm64 comes tomorrow with USPS like the systems. The mail carrier is going to hate me again... between the heavy ass car parts and boxes like this, he has to wonder sometimes what the hell i do in here. I want to end up machining my own metal joystick hardware in the near future. I have some 303 or 304 (forgot already...) stainless steel that I want to use for the bowl and eventually some of the smaller components once I get some decent tiny cutters on order and the 5-axis has an opening for me to use it. I will 3D print out of PETG or cabron fiber some of the gearing and connecting pieces. I feel like that material combination should work well in this application. This is a bit off since I still have another revision to a product that is already to market in the 3D printing community. I am actually making some money on it now which is really cool. How did this reply get so long??

Wow really good video! I just wanted to add that the first game you try speedrunning might not end up being your speed game. I tried Banjo-Kazooie, because I really enjoyed it as a kid, and it just wasnt for me! I learned I dont really like full game runs, since I'm a super obsessive person, and prefer to focus on segments. Since then, I discovered goldeneye speedrunning and am very passionate about it! The community prioritizes IL's, and even has a rankings system over them. I absolutely love it. I also like that it uses IGT (in game time).

Hi, i started speedrunning sm64 months ago (with lots of breaks due to thumb pain, but still), and i’m wondering how to become more consistent in runs. Most of the time, I do runs for a long time without getting out of whomps, and when i get to the end of a run, I always am shaking way too much and just chokes at random things. It’s really discouraging for me and i have no idea how to overcome the pressure. On another note, love the videos! You’re my favorite content creator haha.
@zserf
@zserf 4 года назад
One thing that can help is finishing runs and practicing the late stages of your runs. If you're always resetting early, you'll be less consistent at the later stages and it makes you more nervous because you think about how far into the run you are. There is always some pressure during a good run, but if you're practiced and know that you can do the later stages, it helps a lot.
@AraBleuRio
@AraBleuRio 4 года назад
Thanks for the tips man ! You're right, i never even did no resets because i though they were useless. I got the bad mentality of "if it's red, it sucks, and i'm resetting", and would like to get rid of it (As an exemple, I have 1755 attempts for only 20 finished runs, which were all pbs) . Will definitely try them now, with more late game practice, ty !
