3:22 : Great advice, but only if the company in question actually has real people sending rejection emails. I'd say for all AAA and some AA developers, you'll apply through and be rejected through a noreply email, and they also don't have any direct email for the recruiter on their website. I get that with a high volume of applications that it isn't feasible to have it all done manually, but it does make the feedback part of the process much more difficult.

I just want to have a position where I can provide my ideas and have them taken into consideration; specifically for Rainbow Six Siege. One example off the top of my mind is to make it where when players talk in game chat, there is a voice changer that uses the operator’s voice they are playing as, and, that there is proximity chat between the two teams. I feel like this would give a more realistic and cool sense of this game, but also have a comedic side to it as well.

At this time, focus on developing skills and keep perfecting it, whenever you get the time. After you get a whole idea of how the industry works as a whole, choose what department you enjoy in it and keep focusing on those skills. ( For example: Concept art, Modelling, Animation, Programming, etc.) If there's a specific company or genre you would like to work in, present your portfolio in a manner that's similar to the artstyle of that company, they might like that.

Hi! Put all of your best work together in a general portfolio, on ArtStation for instance (even if it’s a mix of character/environment-art)… And then when you apply for a new position, you can usually add attachments, so you could condense and tailor your portfolio. This could also be about the art style. We’d expect to see a vastly different portfolio for a Division application, compared to one for e.g. a Rayman game. Hope this helps! /Sebastian

If you'll work as a Concept Artist, you can use wherever software, even hand painting, because you'll need to represent concepts visually. All designers will need at the end are drawings/paintings (Artworks) that represent their ideas. In this case, it's about the vision building of the project. If you're going to work as a Game Artist (Drawning the chatacters 2D/Environments/props), as long as your Procreate assets can be imported into the Engine used and render correctly, you can use it. Unless your Art department works exclusively with Photoshop and you working with Procreate may slow the process (Keep in mind that PS is a much more mature product than Procreate).
@saran9736
@saran9736 3 года назад
As @Skanda said, whenever your job as an artist is to draw stuff, it will be considered as Concept artist, they're the starting point when it comes to world and asset creation after the director and story board artist has given enough information about what they want they're imaginary world to be filled with.

T_T I enjoy building worlds in unity and unreal and love working on environmental lighting systems but have no credentials to back up my skills. How strong is a portfolio when apply for positions. Should my portfolio also offer explanations of how to do things or just demonstrate finished results. Is it a good idea for my portfolio to have a section where I show off work I have done within certain constraints? I.E. World settings which I do not personally pick but am instead assigned. Programming is just boring to me and I do understand the basics of programming (I could not confidently make a multiplayer networked game but I understand the process) should I mention that I do have an entry level understanding of C# and C++ and an overall understanding of the use of variables as well as manipulating your environment during runtime with code. Are tools like Blender as respected as Maya? Is it important to understand how to use Unity as well as Unreal Engine and to understand how to use their GFX components like Unitys shader graph? It is very difficult to enter the industry when experience of at least 3 years is always required. A new graduate student with no contacts in the industry has no chance! it is almost IMPOSSIBLE. Say what you want, but it's about having contacts. Every time one applies for a job, they get the answer that they need experiencel For example in sound design, there is no feedback about the Demo or the application . The feedback is that they want one with more experience.

Is it possible be be an animator and a programmer in game dev at the same time? I am very much invested in both and can't choose my specialization
@MoonstarWStarmoon
@MoonstarWStarmoon 2 года назад
Hey I know this is a month old question and you might have an answer already, but just in case: If you decide to both learn some art skills and programming, you will end up with a very desirable portfolio. But, it's hard to learn multiple skills at once so make sure you practice one thing at a time. Honestly the best way to learn both would be to just make a small game yourself, and have that as your portfolio.

I'd suggest looking at becoming a Technical Animator or a Rigger, these involve both programming and animation.

so is it possible to get a job in game dev without having a degree, i mean with just experience?

There's a lot of ways to enter the gaming industry. The job ads specify what experience and knowledge is needed for each role, and that experience could be acquired from various places.

Would you say it is possible for an 18 years old boy who likes video games to get a career in this industry? Taking into consideration that I don't know nothing about programming, designing or anything like that. Maybe it is too late but I would love to get everyone's opinion on this. Thank you.

THANK YOU. All these other Game Designers, whether its no experience, or just general info love to beat around the bush and shove their knowledge in your face. They're mostly douchebags aiming to discourage or further confuse you. Like NO. This is what tf im going to do, idc how hard, don't tell me that. I Appreciate THIS!!

only honest way to get job is widen your network with professional who are working in industry and make friend with him and get recommended. To be friend with professional, you have to be on their level. Simple but hard.

every 3D artist role i've applied for i've never 1s had feedback, and when i ask them for feedback i don't hear anything back from them or they say they cant give feedback. its like them saying oh your not right for the role but i can't tell you why. its so stupid recruiters actually put me off applying for roles because they don't understand the roles themselves.

What kind of job position could I get in the gaming industry giving advice about video game mechanics (what works, what doesn't work well, what players will like, what they won't, the border between fun and challenge, etc.). I also perhaps want to be involved in the actual writing and execution of the story if it has one.

Top tips from a 15 yea industry vet that has worked on multiple AAA titles: 1. Be a woman (this is honest, and gives you an edge) 2. Be multi-faceted. You cannot just be a"designer" or an "engineer". You can of course specialize, having a secondary skill is crucial for longevity. 3. Ability to critically think through problems. Demonstrate problems you've identified with the games the studio makes you are applying for. Then solve those problems, it will blow them away. 4. Have a focused portfolio of only your best work. Some sketches (if an artist are welcomed for demonstrating your process to tackling visual design). If an engineer, then know your fundamentals well, be able to talk through the reasoning of your code. Demonstrate thinking big picture. 5. Do game jams. This one is a no brainer to see the benefits along the lines of cross disciplinary tools you will be exposed to,and the experience you get when making a game. You'll also get a portfolio piece out of it if you're lucky.

Try taking classes either self taught or a course and build a portfolio specifically for that game company. You should have a portfolio for each company you apply for. Every game company has different art styles and that style is there brand so try mimicking that into your work. Also if a company is mostly 2d art then do a 2d portfolio and if it’s 3D then do a 3D portfolio
