This covered what one of the things that I have been most curious about. I thought it might be too risky to have the roadway chopped up by guys standing on it. Guess not. One of the most impressive aspects of all this is that nobody has died. . Not only does the work require enormous skill to do, but it requires a fair amount of skill to just keep from being killed while you're doing it.

Grew up there. Went to school at Sparrows Point High, worked for Bethlehem Steel in their main office, had waterfront with boats and cruised these waters long before there was a bridge. My parents are buried up on German Hill Rd. Probably turning over in their graves. What a mess things are in.

Jeff, I believe the tugs tethered fore and aft of vessels transiting past the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge are "attached escort tugs". The ships are powered by their engines and are steered using their rudders. The escorts can in the event of a loss of power or steering provide immediate assistance. The vessels are not being towed. No, the tugs don't "tow" the ships down the channel. They ESCORT the ship and apply navigation assistance as needed commanded by the pilot and vessel captain.

Thanks for the images and the source info for more. I would expect them to be cutting that roadway into sections with a large diamond saw. They might be using those jack and roto-hammers to make some holes through the slabs so they can wrap chains around the internal re-bar for lifting.

Using a sawzall to cut through hundreds of rebar would be terribly inefficient. If fire risks preclude using a torch, there are hydraulic powered rebar cutters that are an order of magnitude faster than sawing hundreds of rebar.

If you watch the footage of the ship hitting the support. The bridge probably would of stayed standing if the support was hit. BUT the ship hit it and kept moving forward. So it wasn't just a bottom falling out.. it was being pulled forward busting the steel supports. You see all the rebar in that cement... and the massive amount of steel above the road holding it up.

Great pictures and informative video. It's a great question as to how they are cutting the rebar. I think there is too much for a couple of Sawzalls. More likely an abrasive wheel of some sort. Road crews have gasoline powered ones that are hand held.

They would have both small, hand held jack hammers AND Saws-all's. I'd be very careful cutting that rebar. Chances are it is under a lot of tension at this point and what if that piece of roadway shifts? Scary stuff.

Apparently, some ships - maybe cruise lines? - have drone jammers. I was in Bergen Norway visiting a friend who had a drone and a house on the hillside leading down to the port. They could fly out their front window for breathtaking views of the city. But when they got close to the port, the controls would always go dead, and the drone's auto-homing feature was the only thing that saved it. I wonder if this explains the crash here.

Just realised I never noticed how the Dali was moored when she was parked on the pylori. I'll assume they didn't let her hang loose, especially when they trimmed her nose down. Did anyone see how she was moored whilst the bridge was removed? Thanks Jeff for the coverage.
@45KevinR
@45KevinR 4 месяца назад
They had multiple lines fore and aft. Not sure what they used as anchors. That added to the challenge of getting near the bow to work. The Weeks 533 appeared to often get used for its reach and swing even when small jobs including man baskets used only a fraction of its lifting power. Plus the Dali had about 3 tugs with her 99% of the time. Just incase. Had she moved early there could have been further damage including underwater. For the explosive truss removal they also filled her forward ballast tanks, and the tugs left briefly.

@martylost167
@martylost167 4 месяца назад
Bridge will be all new. New design and all new foundation piers. Good question on the Dali. It depends on the insurance company, like when you have a wreck. I think the US is still paying for the Dali work. Weeks is working 7 days a week and like 10 hour days.MM www.youtube.com/@MinorcanMullet should be back maybe tomorrow. STL ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9b1_rucnZFs.html has the 24hr 4K camera, but the focus is poor.
