The 4-lane Francis Scott Key bridge collapse roadway was draped over the bow of the MV Dali ship and has been removed from the ship. But what will happen next? How will the salvors get the crushed containers off the Dali, and where will they take Dali for repairs? in Baltimore Maryland successfully refloated the motor vessel MV Dali ship from the bridge collapse debris. Jeff Ostroff shows some analysis mixed with videos and photos to explain the process.

there is another video of the collision from a bystander. you can see the pillar cap fall onto the ship along with the closest pillar. the farthest pillar was pulverized.

Just speculation: The DALI will go into dry dock in Norfolk. If the marine surveyors don't survey the ship, there is no marine insurance. Essentially, the insurance companies will issue a waiver for assisted transport to the nearest available dry dock. That means tugs will accompany her. An ocean voyage is out of the question at this time. One problem for the owners is they can't ignore this. Failure to follow the rules now could let the insurance companies off the hook for the collision. The claims are bound to exceed a billion dollars and no ship owner is that foolish. Additionally, the details of the damage will determine if the ship is repaired or scrapped. The damage we can see is on the bow, but an internal inspection will detail how far aft the compromised structures extend. The bow got squeezed between the bridge on top and the bottom of the harbor like it was in a vise. Even if repaired, insurance rates may make the ship uneconomical. I am betting it will be scrapped.
@p6x2

I am wondering why they don't offload the containers? is this because they would need to pay for demurrage if the containers are in the harbour?
@robertlevine2152
@robertlevine2152 3 месяца назад
@p6x2 some major legal issues will need to be answered. The M/V Dali is foreign flagged. US cabotage law, i.e. the Jones Act, prevent the Dali from transporting cargo from US port to US port. If there are containers that were loaded in a US port, landing them ashore would be a violation and the Dali could be seized. They may be waiting to remove the weight from the bow for strength and stability reasons. Bob

When a bridge collapses like it did here, the steel can be under tension or compression, because it's twisted, deformed, and stretched, it is very likely a hazard to anyone on the cleanup/disassembly. Especially when it's big steel beams, trusses, etc. the water Definitely doesn't help, as that adds more hazards

I just rode by Seagirt Marine Terminal on 95 and you can see Dali pretty well headed into the tunnel from the east side of the city. It looked like the road deck had been removed from the bow and that is confirmed. I hadnt been on the other side of the city since before the bridge collapsed since I had no need and live on the east side. Headed northbound on 95 going through the Ft McHenry Tunnel on the south side, you can really see the road that is left and the bridge pylon all by its lonesome self. Still heartbreaking and the traffic was a nightmare at 2pm! If there are any locals on this channel, Broening Highway and Boston Street is a great vantage point, but may not be very safe. Go at your own risk and dont blame me if anything happens. It is Baltimore City after all.

Local here. I drive that tunnel daily and if you take the seagirt exit you can drive right by the stern of the ship. I’m talking 50 ft from it. Not sure if you can get close to the bow as it’s obviously fenced in and guarded. I was just trying to turn around when I figured this out going to shake shack after work 😂

Factually, it wasn't there "next week." That comment was made on March 20, 2020 and the ship didn't arrive until 10 days later. It also didn't do much after it finally got there, serving only 20 patients with it's 1,000-bed facility in it's first day of service in which it refused to take any COVID patients. This is what happens when you fly off the handle and do things without planning. Had someone actually talked to the people in charge of the ship, they could have saved the diesel fuel and sent reservists to help in underserved skilled nursing facilities as USS Mercy did AFTER she left port. The U. S. Naval Institute reports that USS Comfort only treated 182 patients during the entire time it was there. USS Mercy didn't do much better. It served only 77 patients while in port. You can check the timeline for the USS Comfort from the Business Insider article of April 26, 2020 entitled "How USNS Comfort went from a symbol of hope with the president's blessing, to heading back from NYC having treated fewer than 180 patients," by Ashley Collman.

No, the Key bridge road is not completely off Dali ship, the largest piece of the road is, but there are smaller pieces of the road that still remain on Dali ship, and they will probably not even need to be removed. I understand the Dali is still able to sail with its own propeller, chances are that it will sail to Norfolk for repairs probaly assisted by tugs but not towed by tugs, since that is approx a 36-48 hrs trip at an average speed of 5 kts per hour. Jeffostroff can always correct me if I am mistaking any info about the matter. I love the accuracy of the host of this channel. Bst rgs

Watching lots of that Live Stream content, it appeared they lifted that section a bit and held it there while they broke off/separated the roadway surface from the base of it. You could see one of the companion cranes raising and dropping a long cylindrical weight looking piece continually at the right end of that truss structure. The structure went up and back down a number of times before they lifted it finally and moved away from the site.

As explained by Sal Mercogliano of What's Going On With Shipping (Sal is an industry expert and is often called upon to analyze ship accidents. I have seen him on TV episodes of maritime accidents, including the Ever Given and the Suez Canal), the anchor chain described here does not drop outside of the hull to the anchor. The chain travels inside a heavy guide tube that guides it down to the end of the port side anchor, which is still embedded in its storage compartment. That anchor was never dropped. The one on the other side was. Dropping the starboard anchor would have swiveled the bow directly into the bridge pier. By dropping the port anchor only, they tried to force the bow away from the pier. Unfortunately, it did not work. Also, that section of the bridge that the Chessie 1000 was attached to IS the remainder of the bridge that fell on top of the Dali's bow. Please don't speculate about what we are seeing. Base your descriptions on actual facts. That is what we should be hearing - not "Fake News".

Here's the context: On March 20th 2020, Rachel Maddow said President Trump's claim that hospital ships would be sent to both the east and west coasts by the next was "nonsense." The USNS Mercy was deployed to Los Angeles and arrived later that weekend, while the USNS Comfort pulled into New York Harbor 10 days after her broadcast. Seems like FAKE news to me. Further, Rachel Maddow lost all credibility from me when she only talked about "Russia, Russia, Russia" hoax for two years on her program, delegitimizing any legitimate attempt Trump made at governing. As it turns out, the Mueller report found that there was no sufficient evidence to establish that Trump, or his campaign, conspired with the Russian government. Again, spreading more lies. And lastly, let's never forget Rachel Maddow's infamous claim, in regard to the COVID-19 vaccine: "instead of the virus being able to hop from person to person potentially mutating, now we know that the vaccines work well enough that the virus stops with every vaccinated person. When a vaccinated person gets exposed to the virus, the virus does not infect them, the virus CANNOT then use that person to go anywhere else." This is a woman who perpetually lies, and regardless of your politics and who you vote for, she should be called out for what she is: a fake news reporter!

I wonder why they haven't started unloading all of the other containers. There is a lot of misc. steel framing from the bridge deck still laying on the deck of the ship. The cleanup work likely cut and broke the bridge deck into pieces, separating it from the steel framing and leaving the steel framing behind. That isn't easy, the steel beam framing probably has good sized connectors going up into the concrete slabs.

The catwalk you are describing is not from the top of the truss but was between the roadway portion and the bottom cross members of the truss. Look very carefully at the underside of the complete bridge you showed the underneath portion of the main span, and you can make out the catwalk which was used to make inspections of the bottom portions and underneath parts of the roadway. The port anchor was released. The DALI is tied to the pier on the port side so we see the starboard side of the ship and the starboard anchor is still firmly attached in its recess.

I made a comment early on in all this that I thought the ship Pilot or Capt may have balked at passing under the bridge cuz of possible const workers on a gantry under the bridge (remember all the flashing lights up there at the time?). Jeff: what is the EXACT proceedure when a large ship leaves a port & passes under bridges, etc (esp draw bridges!). As I said b4, there was an incident that occurred at the Verrazzano Br years ago because of a lack of coordination between a construction crew on the VZ bridge & a fuel barge passing beneath it at the time (welding/cutting torch sparks: BLAMO!). I know oversize loads on hwys must have permits & route plans to move about (esp when hwys have const projects planned). Wld be interested to know. Keep up the gr8 work, Jeff. It's interesting to see the bulbous bow peeking out of the water. It looks to me that the Dali must have taken very little damage below the waterline. Assuming everything is dry and they don't see any distortion or cracking below the waterline, they may only need to dock the Dali to make her watertight and repair and re-attach the anchors. I think it was Sal that mentioned they will not be allowed to sail without working anchors and I think we all know the full repair work will be done at or near her home port in Asia.

I am surprised that they haven't unloaded the rest of the containers off the Dali. All the one's that weren't crushed that is 🤔

We call them Ton bags here in Ireland. You can only get your sand or gravel or topsoil or practically any bulk material delivered or collected in them. Councils got fed up with contractors causing blocked drains that they changed the laws. Even the waste disposal or recuse companies use them. Pick up a bag in most stores and just call the number for collection. Just seems strange to me that in a big country like the USA you struggle to know what they are or what they are called.

I am not sure person would routinely use them in their lives. In my 25 years of owning a house in Canada, I never had to get garbage removal bag or bin myself. If needed, contractors come with their own stuff, and I do not even look how they transport what they need to transport. If people do renovations with lots of debris to haul out later, they usually hire a large metal bin, which a truck will later haul away, though I saw plastic bins as well.

Chances are that it will go to the Newport News Shipyard where the carriers are serviced. I would think it is the only shipyard big enough to handle her size. That's across from Norfolk

Jeff, have you seen this RU-vid posted 6 days ago titled "Engineers hired by Champlain Towers South go public with where they think first failure occurred"? In the video's description is a link to CBS Miami's print story by the same title. I am very curious what your thoughts are regarding Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates' conclusions and any photos or other evidence you did not have access to during the brilliant analysis you did to deduce what happened before and after the collapse.

The CBS Miami story mentions a webinar by WJE, Associates. I found it on the NCSEA Education Portal, titled "05.21.2024 | Champlain Towers South - WJE Collapse Investigation". The cost to purchase it is $250 - $300. It was published on 5/21/2024.

A 64-minute webinar entitled "Champlain Towers South (Surfside, FL) Collapse Investigation" is available free on the WJE website. I think it was posted on 5/28/2024.

This is a repeat of the presentation that gave a year ago and I covered this in June 2023 through Sept 2023. I think the news station was wrong about this being new info, same exact conference call I sat on a year ago

Just wondering if customs is going to inspect all the containers. After seeing prior pictures of the containers that had autos in them and the speculation that they may have been stolen just begs to question if they were.

Dali will most likely be towed to Newport News Shipbuilding where they build and re-fab/repair Navy ships and subs but this is just a guess. Their is over 11 dry docks there.

I often wonder what was in those containers on the bow that were crushed? Hopefully, nobody's furniture that was being relocated to their new home overseas! Not to mention people and companies waiting for whatever was in all those other containers onboard. Delayed for months.
