Pro tip for all my fellow frequent swimmers: before entering the pool, spray your hair with watered down conditioner to help keep the chlorine out. Your hair is going to soak up the conditioner first so that the chemicals in the pool are less likely to be as damaging. Even spraying with normal water from the sink will work fine! Just DON'T go in the pool with dry hair! :)

I was just going to recommend this! Despite swimming every day I have minimal split ends and breakage and what helps me the most is doing that and using deep conditioner in large amounts every time I wash. If you can afford it don't worry about wasting product- using too much will do nothing, using too little will lead to brittle hair

Alb, Please please don't misuse the term "chemical"!! Chemicals make up literally everything we touch and see and breathe and are. So using shampoo on your hair is using chemicals on it. Using henna is using chemicals. Using the term "chemical" to only refer to bad things gives people a bad mindset and your viewer base is so big that I hope you will use these words responsibly! :)
@artistenoire
@artistenoire 9 лет назад
As a chemist, I know all too well the public's perception of the word "chemical" and the ignorance our society is steeped in about the supposed "toxins" and "icky stuff" in our products. It isn't nitpicking. It is important.
@mywingsareyours
@mywingsareyours 9 лет назад
***** THIS!! I super agree. When I worked in natural health/the supplement industry, people were so crazy about this and it killed me. Aubrey Organics at one time changed their labeling so it was more specific- but it was all the same stuff. They just used scientific and chemical names for the natural ingredients. Everyone lost their shit about the "new formulas" and how they were no longer natural... When if you actually read the ingredients, it was the exact same stuff. Every single thing is a chemical. Chemicals aren't bad. lol
@88kayleigh
@88kayleigh 9 лет назад
***** I totally agree! The truth is most people CAN'T discern what the term chemicals really means, and there is a lot of widespread "chemical phobia" these days. Chemicals are NOT bad!!
@artistenoire
@artistenoire 9 лет назад
Well it's not that they're "not bad" or "not good" - it is that they simply make up all matter in the known universe. They are water and arsenic. They are bullets and bombs. They are cancer and chemotherapy. They are the babies we give birth to, and the nectar of the flowers. They're everything. But demonizing the term just promotes an anti-science mindset in people and that is too bad.

This was super super helpful and adorable!! I loved all your little subtext commentary hehe I'm definitely going to try out coconut oil :) I tried using biotin but dumb me didn't check what was in it and the first active ingredients in it are fish oils.....and I'm allergic to fish. It made my nails and hair nice but slowly made me very ill. I've heard the prenatal vitamins (vitamins for pregnant ladies) has a similar effect to biotin and most don't have fish oils. I've been meaning to try them out but haven't yet.

Lovely Lor oh god, thanks for posting because I didn't know that and I'm deathly allergic to fish!
@talim67
@talim67 9 лет назад
Just be careful with prenatal vitamins because some vitamins and minerals are toxic in larger quantities like iron and vitamin A. Prenatal vitamins are usually formulated the way they are because your body uses more of those nutrients during pregnancy. Plus, the nails and hair pregnant women have are due to hormone levels changing, not their prenatal vitamins. Here is a link for more info: www.xovain.com/how-to/should-i-take-prenatal-vitamins

Lovely Lor There's also a few vegan sources, I ordered a certified vegan hair/nails growth supplement this morning from Vegan Essentials. And since it's certified vegan, it better not have fish in it, because fish is super not vegan.

As a black girl with kinky curly hair, I already knew most of the tips that you gave from the natural hair community lol me personally, my hair is very brittle and gets knots so easily because my curl patter is so tight that knots are literally unavoidable. I know you said that you don't brush/comb your hair when it's wet, but for me, I can't comb my hair when it's dry because that will rip the knots out of my head. Instead, I detangle my hair while I have conditioner in on it. Conditioners with great slip is great for that. Also, there are shampoos that are moisturizing and not "stripping." I recommend Organix Argon oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner or Creme of Nature's Argon Oil shampoo and conditioner. Just argon oil is great lol. But you are right when you say that you shouldn't shampoo as often. I shampoo my hair once a week, normally on the weekend, and use conditioner after that. And during the week, I "cowash" (conditioner wash) my hair once because it gets that dry feelings very easily. And every day, I add Jamaican Black Castor coconut oil to keep my hair moisturized. I'm sorry this comment was long but it's just that everyone's hair is different and require different attention and it depends on the texture and porosity of your hair.
@wangocopperboom
@wangocopperboom 9 лет назад
I've used Organix before! It's pretty nice. Recently I've been trying Giovanni's 2Chic Brazilian Karatin and Argan Oil conditioner. I can only find it at my local health food co-op, but it's worth the trip. A little goes a long way and I actually feel like my hair has been thoroughly conditioned. Also seconding the brushing issues. My hair has more of a spiral curl and I find it easier to use a detangler while damp, or otherwise forgo brushing and just kind of tousle and scrunch my hair as it dries. If I try to dry brush my hair becomes straw.

EpicPseudonym I've never heard of that product. I'll try and look out for it :) Recently, I've been also using Shea Moisture products like their Restorative Conditioner and their Deep Conditioner Masque. I haven't used the deep conditioner yet, but the restorative conditioner makes my hair SO soft! I love it!

I too have kinky curly hair and I have extremely dry hair. A couple of weeks ago I bought some products that have quite literally changed my hairs life and now have have hair that is so soft and you can really see my curls which is crazy.These include: Treseme Keratin repair deep treatment mask, Motions Conditioner (makes hair super soft especially in combo with the deep treatment), Motions leave in conditioner spray(soft soft soft), Shea Moisture shea butter with infused coconut and hibiscus (gets rid of shrinkage and makes hair super soft), Kinky Curly leave in conditioner and detangler (great detangler) and Treseme Smooth and Silky Shampoo (when combed through hair defines curls and also doesn't completely strip hair of moisture) :) I have seen such a difference in my hair after using these products its crazy I definantely recomend checking them out. I also use biotin, I did a video on it and my amazing results, I am prone to breaking out and I broke out using Natrol brand Biotin 5000msg but when I used Natures Bounty Biotin I was completely fine and saw the best results. Biotin is naturly found in hazelnuts so if you don't like the fact its a pill incorporate hazelnuts into your diet. All the best in your natural hair journey :)

It makes my hair so soft and it just melts the tangles away! I also have Nature's Bounty Biotin. I don't take it everyday though because it's 10,000 mcg and I heard if you take too much, you'll break out in weird places. I wish your natural hair journey the best as well :)

I've always had difficulties with getting long hair. When I was a kid I had CVS (cyclic vomiting syndrome) so since I threw up a lot as a result, my hair was kept short to maintain the mess easier. As I got older and grew out of my syndrome (I still get episodes, but only once or twice a year they may occur, so not nearly as much as before) I started getting this habit of biting my hair. People would often see me and ask "Did you get a haircut?" so I started realizing that biting my hair was really adding up to my hair staying short. I made my 2015 new year resolution to stop biting my hair. I've been doing a good job at keeping that resolution. Sometimes when I get anxious or intensely stressed out, it gets really hard to resist, but I've been using a lot of conscious effort and do other things when I'm feeling anxious such as crocheting and watching ASMR videos. Its a slow process, but I know that the work will add up eventually. You have the most lovely hair. When I was watching Heather Feathers ASMR video that had you in it, I was like "Whoa, that HAS to be extensions right?" But as I watched this video, I had been proven wrong xD.

A huge help is extensions. I have the same illnesses and hair problems plus i pick at the ends of my hair. I used to use clip in and those didn't fully help but once i started using tape-in extensions i stopped picking at my ends and i stopped washing my hair every day. I uses them for about 3 months now and my hair grew a little more than an inch. tape-in hair really helps.

I've had very long hair for pretty much my whole life and I do everything in this video (except for eating right...) and it's so very accurate. I was just nodding my head vigorously through the whole thing ♥ I took such good care of my hair (and was very blessed in the genetic pool of hair, ngl) that when I bleached it, there was practically no damage. The second time I bleached it, there was a bit of damage. The third time TOTALLY WRECKED MY LIFE. BUT with lots of conditioning and sweet-talking, my hair is on the road to recovery :D

This video is so helpful, and I have another long curly hair story to share to reiterate the hell chlorine can put one through: when I was younger I used to swim ALL THE TIME. Then puberty hit and I suddenly had this curly hair and awkwardness that I didn't know what to do with. I kind of stopped swimming until I got an apartment with a pool. By this time, my hair was ridiculously long and I had never swam with this hair. Naturally, I wanted to let my long hair flow in the water like a majestic mermaid---which was fun while it lasted! But then I returned to my apartment and realized my majestic mermaid hair was a tangle of seaweed that would require a good hour of conditioner+brushing to remove the ridiculous tangles from roughly 2 ft of hair. Since then, braids have been my savior.

This was a very informatory video. Your energy is very positive and your hair looks amazing. I am also a firm believer of feeding your hair from inside :) Consuming lots of fish, nuts, olive oil, avocado, eggs and drinking lots of water helps a lot. I also take vitamins containing zinc and biotin that help the hair. I use coconut and avocado oil masks once every two weeks. I don't towel dry my hair just to avoid friction. If I am going to use heat I use heat protection sprays and do keratin sprays beforehand. I use paraben-free shampoos and apply rice vinegar-water formulas just to keep that shine. I also comb my hair with a wood comb when its wet and I wash it no more than twice or three times a week Oh, it is a lot of work but its also fun and worth it. I really want to get my hair pastel pink or cotton candy pink but I am dead scared to go platinum blonde because my hair is already over processed. I have medium ash brown, fine hair and it takes me at least two bleaches and a toning to reach platinum blonde...

I keep hearing people talk about shampoo being bad and I mostly agree. However it just doesn't work for me. I have oily skin, I always have and my hair gets dirty so fast. Plus I work from home and I go days without washing my hair, but yet there has been no decrease in oil. So her tip about showering less doesn't always work.

+SwimmerGotSoul I get you, I have super oily skin and hair too, and if I go one day without washing it, it looks disgusting and dirty. Also, I have to go out every single day, and I feel so uncomfortable with my hair looking like that! So I wash it every single day. It sucks tho, because if an average human grows 6 inches per year, I grow like 3 inches, but I want to have long hair SO bad :c PS: Where I live, there isn't such thing as that magic product called "dry shampoo", so fuck it, I guess I'll just wait like three more years for it to grow.

I cut my hair short and now it is barely touching my shoulders. However my hair is wavy so the shorter areas are growing out kind of spiky? Like they refuse to tame down and just stick out and kind of stab me in the face. Plus they won't stay in my ponytail. So frustrating! This is the shortest I've ever had my hair. So search for "Dimeticone" in the indrigients of the product you wanna buy. And if it contains it, don't buy it. It's a no no. (Please excuse my bad english, but I hope I could help somehow)

Crush up a bunch of vitamin c tablets or buy vitamin c powder and add a load of it to some anti dandruff shampoo so it feels kinda gritty. Lather it on your head and leave it for a few hours and it should pull colour out. You might have to do it a few times but it's how I got SFX Atomic Pink and Deep purple out of my hair!
@RebekkaStock

Unfortunately Atomic Pink can be really hard to get out. When I tried to get rid of it (dyed 6 months prior to that) my hair was pretty short, so I did a full 30 minutes 20 vol bleach - and was left with white roots and a salmon color where the AP was before :/

@Violka1987 9 лет назад
The thing is, one has to have good genetics as well. It's about the terminal length of your hair- it's the length that your hair reaches before it falls out- this is different for different people and it is affected by many things. Let's say your one hair that grows out of your head lives for 6 years (this is just an example, not all hair is the same) and for one person, 6 years of growth might mean that they get hair up to their butt. To other person, same 6 years might only mean they get it past shoulders- together with hair life span, you also need to look at how fast your hair grows. So, if you have both short life span of your hair AND slow growth, your hair will NEVER be long, because your hair simply won't reach the length you want, it goes to slow and it falls out before it could reach the length you wish to have. Of course, you need to eat healthy and have good lifestyle, but you won't do much about your genetics. Maybe, with your genetics, shoulder length hair is the best you can get. Embrace it. Or buy extensions.

Thank you, ALB! I recently cut my hair short, and while it was fun for a few months, I'm ready to grow it out again. It can be frustrating to just sit around and wait to see progress, so it helps to know these tricks!

Ahh the joys of curly hair. "get regular haircuts".. Try finding one that actually knows how to cut curls. Also, for natural curls, brushing dry is terrible. A wide toothed comb, in the shower, while it''s drenched in conditioner. Going no-poo is great, but you absolutely can NOT use anything with silicones in it if you plan on doing it.

YUP. combing wet breaks my hair, sure.... but combing/brushing dry turns it into a pile of frizz. its a struggle.

Your videos are the best, your hair tips are amazing and have been helping me get so many compliments on my pink hair for almost two years now! Not sure I want to grow my hair as amazingly long as yours at the moment, but when I make the decision, I'll probably keep going back to this video like I do your pink hair one. :) These are just really good hair tips in general, and I also thought it was cute how all the tools you had photos of were pink :). (also: rock fact!) ah ALB you are one of my favorite people thank you for this video!

Definitely looking forward to the video on removing heat tools from my life. I'm so dependent on my blow dryer and straightener, even then I'm not always satisfied with my hair. I've been thinking about keratin treatment. Currently taking biotin in hopes of stronger nails and nice hair. I'm envious of your beautiful hair!

omg! i've been waiting for you to make this video forever, i'm so happy! i've been a fan/subscriber to you/your ASMR channel for a while, love your content/art! As for hair, mine grows super super fast, so I always cut it short then grow it out and repeat. The problem is my hair is incredibly thin. The strands are actually fairly thicker, but I just don't have that many "hairs" on my head. :(

I love coconut oil so much! I started using it in my hair while applying bleach about a year ago as well and have really noticed a difference. It makes the whole process less harsh on your hair and scalp, and I also find that my results have actually become better since then and that it speeds up the whole process a bit (+ the hair separates more easily/easier application). I COULD GO ON. Anyways. Everything you said in this video was absolutely on point, I do pretty much all of these things and wouldn't be able to keep my hair the way it is if I didn't. (Can I just say also that I think you're an amazing fantastical person and a huge inspiration!) Lots of love from Sweden ♡

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I've been waiting patiently, and now I'm so happy. 😄 all of these tips are great and some of them I've already incorporated into my hair routine when I decided to seriously commit to growing out my hair. Coconut oil is amazing. Castor oil is too, you might wanna try that sometime. Cold pressed castor oil, of course. The one hair crime I still commit is leaving it down while I sleep. I'm going to try to get better at this, as well as find a better brush. Thanks again for sharing, Ange! PS - what is the name of the color of polish on your nails? It's so pretty! ♡

Thank you so much for doing this! I thought I knew all the tricks about getting longer hair, but you definitely have some good ones! Also, with the chlorine and the pool thing: if you completely saturate your hair with water before swimming in chlorine it kind of limits the amount of chlorine that can saturate as your hair is already wet. However it won't completely limit it, I think the longer you're exposed to it the more gets in, but you can keep getting out and rinsing it with water again! But yeah, if you're ever in the kind of situation where you really want to or have to then that may help!
