Today I’ll show you a little known or used exercise that will stop the pulled chest so you can begin the process of building your mixed voice. This is a proven exercise that works for students who need extra help getting mixed voice and it will work for you.

I'm both flabbergasted and infuriated. I've been a professional singer for over 20 years. I've taken hundreds of voice lessons, dating all the way back to high school. I've never heard of mixed voice in my life. My break has always been just the worst, and it's stopped me from using my head voice my whole career. I can't believe I'm just now hearing of "mixed-voice." How was this never taught to me?! Thanks for this video series. My mind is blown.

Teachers who don't know about this, aren't trying to withhold information. They don't know that they don't know. My own teacher, who received his bachelors and masters in vocal performance could not find any teacher in his studies to help him and he was angry. Finally at age 27 he found someone who knew about this and helped him. He has devoted his entire life to develop a technique that everyone can learn. I was 43 before I found it. It is life changing for me personally.

Hi Chuck! I've been singing my entire life but a few months ago I found out about the existence of "mixed voice" and I suddenly understood exactly what my voice was missing and how that was holding me back from being a better singer. For months now I've been reading articles, watching videos and doing exercises but to no avail. I just found your videos and was pleased to find out that you actually didn't know how to do mixed voice and were able to teach yourself! That gives me hope!!! So I've been watching a bunch of your videos and I'm trying to do these exercises but my stupid flip-falsetto voice keeps having to choose whether to do them in chest voice or falsetto... which am I supposed to be doing them in? Should I "flip" between them? I just can't see myself ever bridging the gap :( Please help!

@@jesspostings I don't teach students to go for a certain sound. You must go for a certain anatomical condition. Here in the Philippines, "ng" is present in most sentences we used everyday with our native language and also in our songs like "Ngayon" "Ang" "Saang" "Aling" "Merong" "Ngalan" "Mga"-pronounced as ma-nga and many more. I am not bragging and I do not know if this is the reason but me and most of my friends and family could sing really well. I do not know if it is because of us loving karaoke but I really think pronouncing and singing with "ng" sound really helps.

Hi ! Really really really by far the best advise on mix voice on RU-vid ! I'm a rock singer since my twenties but I discovered the NG exercise only about 5 years ago. That exercise extended my almost tenor range to F5 ! But, but, but... I lost a lot of my head voice (falsetto) range doing so (over F5). It feels like I've built up muscle for mix voice, and now my voice don't want to break. Do I have to learn to "mix" my mix voice with my falsetto ? Do you have advice to help me get back that falsetto range that I could play with up to F6 ?

Wow, it's amazing to see you replying to comments years after the video is posted. So I have a question. I have a hard time getting a smooth and gradual transition from the chest to the head voice. When I do the first exercise, I can feel and hear a definite shift in tone as I approach the bridge. I just can't seem to grasp the feel of that smooth transition through the passaggio. If I try to maintain the more chesty feel for the higher notes, I only get the pulled chest. So basically, I want to ask if I'm doing it wrong if I feel like my voice is shifting rather than maintaining a smooth connection throughout. It's hard to explain, but it sounds like NG~NG~NG~HNG~HNG~HNG~HNG~NG~NG. Thanks you!
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 3 года назад
Hi WW: At first we almost all feel the transition areas. Also, what you are describing can be diminished by cutting the loudness or intensity by 50%, especially in the chest voice. Try and reduce how loud and hard you are starting the exercise. See if this makes a difference.

Great exercise!! I have a question; does blocking the nose cancel sound when you sing mix in general, or just the ng-sound? I feel like I'm mixing, but can still make sound with a blocked nose (however not with the ng like you demonstrated). Great channel by the way ☺
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 4 года назад
Sing a hooty "e" on a G4 (if you're a guy) and hold your nose. or sing "oo" or "oh". Then while holding your nose sing an "M" or "N" . Those consonants will send the resonance into the nose. What happens when you sing "ME"?
@4444marla

I also use the ng, but how does this translate when you open into a vowel? The voice mixes on those exercises on the ng, but on an "A"?? Thank you very much.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 5 лет назад
Hi Marla: This will help retrain the nervous system to stop pulling chest voice. It introduces a new feeling that they may have never felt before. Some students have rarely felt mix or connected head voice. You would use this exercise as a first step. One option would be to do an octave repeat on "ming" and have them sing muh...like ming ming ming muh muh muh and see if it stays connected without pulling. If not stay with the ming and add a more closed vowel like "no" or etc.

I’ve been singing in chest for so long it’s hard to tell when I go higher if I’m naturally going into mixed or just good at pulling chest. I’m guessing I go into mixed cus something in my throat flips as if it feels like I give it much more forward placement outwards instead of singing inwards, and my ears pop as if I’m yawning. I then go into head voice pretty easy and smoothly. Thoughts?

Interestingly, you call this "mixed" voice when it really is working on the transition from the chest voice to the head voice. I've always understood mixed voice as a combination of two of the voices - chest, middle, head or falsetto.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 9 месяцев назад
Yes, I call that transition in the middle area where both chest and head voice overlap, Mix, or Middle. We're talking about the same thing exactly. Since I don't believe falsetto is the same thing as head voice, I usually say mix, or middle, is the combination (or mix) of chest and head voice.

very important question. Can this techque be used in singing lower note since I heard a theory called " second gear"( directly translate from Chinese) can do that and it is special musle that should use in singing. When an ordinary people use this special musle to sing, it can automatically resinate all rooms as needed. It can also bridge to " 3rd gear" without any sound quality and type change( of course no crack), used to sing super high note d5 and up for male..
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing Год назад
No...However this technique will help keep the larynx lower which will allow you to sing lower notes with ease. The reason why we lose lower notes iwe normally can sing is because the larynx is high. Sorry, I have no knowledge or experience with 2nd or 3rd gear. I have no data that supports that theory or notion.

I have a very naturally raspy chest voice and a weak, quiet head voice. My chest voice is full of so much rasp beyond my control and I've been trying to obtain a mixed voice for so long now. Do I need a clear chest tone before I can mix with my head voice?
@PowerToSing

First I recommend you go to the ENT Dr and have them look at your vocal cords to see if they have some damage. Something as common as acid reflux and cause rasp and it can be cleared up so your voice can clear up too.

Many of us do or have done this. For me it took taking some voice lessons. I got over it immediately in the vocal exercises, but it took me years to stop spreading my vowels. But I'm slow. Eventually it was able to be pretty consistent. But I have to stay vigilant...it's just my tendency.

I listen to a lot of different singers and everyone sings very high. Somebodies have a high larynx, somebodies have a good technique however nobody sings like me and everybody overcomes to singing high. When I wasn't interested in singing high, I used to use the E2-E4 range and I was so good while I was singing on this range. If you think ng or ing is being done correctly, pinch your nose while doing it. If that causes your lips to blow open to let the air escape through your mouth you are doing it right. That's because the ng forces the air to flow through the nose, not the mouth.

is it usual that during the "ng" exercise, the air leaves mostly trough the Nose?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing Месяц назад
Yes! If done correctly all the air exits through the nose during the "ng"! You can test yourself by pinching your nose. If absolutely no air is escaping through the mouth, you won't be able to pinch your nose for longer than a second without blowing open the soft palate.

@PowerToSing

How old are you? Teen boys have a harder time of this. If you are flipping into falsetto as you do higher, lean harder on the NG feeling without getting louder. You won't endanger your voice unless you let go of the NG and start yelling it. Another way is to repeat the word "Ming" on each note moving quickly to the NG. Sometimes the "M" gives you extra firmness to help keep the cords together.

Yes a lot of tenors can sing ladies notes. And they can sing a lot of men's notes, too. I don't really hear what you are describing, however, I did hear you are occasionally off pitch. You should focus on that, because you have a nice voice and the pitch issues will hold you back.

@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 6 месяцев назад
Yes and no. Yes for warm ups etc. But training the voice to function in the bridges is different. Most basses are actually baritones who can't bridge, and baritones and tenors all have the same first bridge...beginning at Eb4. Same with altos and sopranos. A true Basso bridges at the A3 and the true contralto bridges at the E4. But they are rare.

Teacher I'm puzzled at the idea of doing an NG sound with the sound not coming out of the nose. are you saying the trick is to do an NG sound with your nose plugged at the same time? So this sound is coming out of the mouth? I've always done NG out of my nose with my tongue at the top of my mouth blocking any sound from coming out of the mouth. do you have any videos where you're demonstrating that?
@PowerToSing

Right. You can't do ng and hold your nose at the same time. Just do the ng or ing sound without holding your nose.

@JoviBeni 9 месяцев назад
@@PowerToSing would you be willing to point me to a video that teaches me about the purpose of the plugging the nose technique? or something that you have that elaborates further on the concepts you're intending to share in this video? Before you had kindly replied to my comment, I have been working on these exercises you prescribed, while using the pinch nose, but in order to use the pinch nose, I learned to shape my vocal tract into an NG shape, but not blocking off the mouth, which I find is activating what may be called "necessary twang", and allowing me to sing lightly into my higher range.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 8 месяцев назад
@@JoviBeni I'm not sure what you mean by the "plugging the nose technique". What I said in the video is if you are doing the "ng" exercises right, you plug your nose. The idea behind the video is to do an exercise that makes it impossible to pull up chest voice. The ng, n, m consonants makes it impossible to pull chest. If you lose the closure the ng, n, or m creates, you can pull chest. This video is to help the vocal cords to adjust for mix so you can feel what your cords do when mixing. That's it.
