So how does compliment works for fragrances? It all depends on your type of personality, how you dress, the people around you and what occasion it is. Personality: Even if you have the best fragrance in the world, if you have a introvert personality, you will not likely receive compliments from others as people see you as unfriendly to talk to and comment on your smell and fragrance. Dress: If you dress nice like a suit and tie or a tuxedo, people are more likely to compliment you. This is because all their senses are heighten including smell when they see you dress nice and out of the ordinary. The people around you: If you are around friends and family, or even someone who is outspoken, you will receive more compliment as they are not afraid and comfortable to share their opinion. Occasion: If you in an bar scene, work, college classes or on a date, you are more likely to receive compliments as you are closer to people and there for some period of time to leave a nice silage around you. Even if its a happy and a open situation. Expectation: Don't expect people to fall head over heels for you fragrance the moment you wear it. Hope this help and stay classy.
You're right about overspraying. Sometimes, I have a urge to overspray just because I want to make sure that people smell it, but I agree when you say that it's better that people do not smell anything than filling up the room with your fragrance and being 'that guy'. Thanks for the other tips too :)
i'm not worried about compliments.but the two things i worry about.(1)that they can notice i'm wearing a fragrance when they get close(2)to not wear too much so i wont offend them.
Excellent video ! Very articulated and to the point. You gave a wonderful breakdown of more than just the basics that everyone should know. You are definitely one of the best . I look forward to each and everyone of your future videos.
I know this is an old video, but I would like to say that I found this very useful in terms of choosing an everyday fragrance. I know that each cologne is different for every person, but let's be honest, we wear cologne to attract others, so their opinions matter a lot. Knowing which fragrances gets the most compliments is really useful for choosing an everyday wear. Keep up the great videos!
I rarely get compliments on any fragrances, but that might just be because I am a student. Other students probably don't pay attention to fragrance that much, seeing as everyone usually just wears deodorant. I also try not to spray too much, because if I overspray and have to sit in the same room as these people literally all day, it will be a really bad experience for them. But I usually get the feeling that most of my fragrance is vanished already by the time I cycled to university.
Why are so many people SO insecure that they wear frags just for compliments? Wear something because YOU like it. Stop begging people for validation and approval.
It's about the user experience keep trying different approaches. By that I mean the areas in which you spray the body. The top rule in cologne for teens is less is more. Teens spray more because they think it makes them stand out. That's true for the wrong reason. You may not smell it b/c you're used to it while someone else can smell it. Before you buy a cologne or perfume buy samples and go to fragrance stores and test to see which work the best on your body.
Hello.....enjoyed listening to what you had to say. We can spend a lot of money on fragrances that we think will smell really nice on us or they could also smell terrible. It's basically knowing our own body chemistry and then trying to match the right fragrances with ourselves but there is that many scents out there, you could easily spend a fortune!. As you said, a fragrance that you've spent about £2 on could smell gorgeous on you than something you've spent £200 on and it could smell awful or not last at all. I think my problem is knowing which perfume has the best longevity.
Just started watching your videos a week ago, and I have to say you're the most informative fragrance reviewer I've seen. I love watching your videos, and this one helped out a ton. At first I was trying to get scents to attract women, but that is the wrong approach in my opinion. I then started wearing cologne that I wanted to smell all day. I still haven't gotten a compliment, but that might be because I don't really put that much on. Thanks Cody! p.s. my name is Cody as well haha
YES,[damn caps lock] I recommend this book, It changed the way I look at dealing with people, I think she emphasizes romance in daily life, dressing off the top of my head, eating conversations. Women seldom wear white underwear, smell the food experiance the food, seduce and romance the conversation, Ch. 9 "A perfume becomes a form of intimacy...a means to compel the other person to remember you."
can't stand grey flannel either. loved it the first couple of times but the scent is so strong even after 18 hours. a lot of what you said in this video is true. I had to learn it the hard way almost 20 years ago from some of my peers who instead of teaching me, they ridiculed me. so it's up to each man to let the next one know so he can avoid the potholes. thanks
You are telling it as it really is. I have always said and totally agree with you, a fragrance is only an accessory. One part of a puzzle. You need to complete the whole puzzle, to attract women.
Started collecting in mid December and here is where Im at. YSL L'Homme, L'Homme Intense, La Nuit De L'Homme. I feel that all three of those will cover me for ANY occasion and most seasons. I love that I can decide how long I want the L'Homme scent to last with both and I can over spray La Nuit if Im going out. Let me know what Line I should try next. Im considering Thierry Mugler or Chanel.
You could use shaving lotion instead of shaving cream if you don't already. Most of what's in them can's is just to get it to shoot out of the can and smell good. The squeeze bottle's are a little more expensive but well worth it.
Shahid Meighan I saw a hallmark movie a long time ago, and one of the main characters worked the perfume counter at a Belk-like store. She said what she did was ask customers their favorite color, season, and time of day, and then would pick a scent that matched those type of characteristics. Oddly enough this works...I tried that trick on my ex and unknowingly got her a bottle of what she already had and she loved it! This is a good, quick trick if you just want a "you" signature scent.
Great vid bro. Nice way to break things down. Always as a bonus are included some humorous moments. Such as the Mechanic who will never get a compliment LOL.... Also smelling "high".
The short answer is.. most of the time no. I do plan on doing a video on this in the future... one of the topics I have been researching. Fragrances DO go bad though at times but age is much less of a factor than others...
On the whole price doesn't matter thing is very true I have a minor collection of colognes about 20 ranging from $10 to $100 a bottle and the number one cologne I get complimented on is Cuba Gold. So cheap but yet so good :)
Thanks, but that's intentional. Whenever I have to speak in front of a board room or for anything else.. they move much less. With nothing going on though.. I like to create movement.
Great vid, once again, Mr. Cody. This may be off topic, but I am actually considering wearing One Million to work. As you may remember, I am a letter carrier and spend most of my day outside and alone, though I do have some customer conact. I will be surrounded on three sides, by letter cases, in the office. I just like the scent and feel it will cut through the cold. I will update you on any feedback. Take care.
I buy fragrances to mainly get compliments from. I have to like it plus it has to please other people around me noses. Strange though that even though I have a good amount of popular fragrances, I rarely get compliments with them unless I am really close up on someone. I usually take the many reviewers advice on how much to spray but when I follow their advice to be careful about being heavy on the sprayer, people rarely smell it useless I just put it on(Mainly Top notes) or I spray alot. So I usually spray like 6-8 sprays and it will last me a good 4-5 hours then die down but I always fear overspraying. I wear scentless lotion with them, it helps a slight bit but not much. I bought colognes that are supposed to project well according to reviewers(Thank God...I love them all, money well spent). -I own Dior Homme Intense, YSL La Nuit de L'homme, Fahrenheit(Latest), L'eau D'Issey, Joop Homme(I am careful with this, still testing it, 3 sprays for me), Thallium, Carolina Herrera 212 Men(4-5 sprays this does project when it's hot), Nautica Voyage,Creed Aventus, Millisime Imperiale, 24 Gold, Bond no.9 Bleecker street and Silver factory, V&R Spicebomb, and Mugler Cologne(I have to spray alot of this. I just don't know why I have to spray so much more than what reviewers say. I find it odd that not even my friends and family rarely smell it but I guess it is better than choking people and having someone say it stinks but still........WTF?! Is the air way too dry here. I live in Maryland,U.S.A. We get a mixture of Really hot summers to Rainy spring and fall to Freezing Winters.
Everyones skin type is different. If you have to spray more, then so be it. It's true you'll have to worry about overspraying, but you will soon be able to figure out your medium.
Wow, thank you Doc for replying. I watched all of your videos on your opinion before I blind bought my fragrances. My skin usually is dry (even hours after I put on lotion) so I figure that can be an important factor. That plus I only sweat if I start running.
trunks2505 Hi i have the same problem on my skin i think i'm not using enough sprays for my fragrance to be noticed at all buy friends family ect unless someone is really close and i'm also worried about over spraying to offend someone.but i'm going to try over spraying around family friends they feel bad for me because they cant smell my fragrance well.so i'll over spray around them.they won't be offended.so i can find my medium.
trunks2505 i just put on 9 sprays of gucci guilty black on 3 sprays to each side of neck and 3 to chest. asked my outspoken but wonderful mom to get close about 2 feet close and asked her how i smell. she said she smells nice cologne but says its light but still noticeable.so from now on i'll wear 9 sprays.my mom knows if a fragrance is light or not.i know your question was meant for dracdoc but just wanted to tell you your not the only one.
I wear suits to business functions and I go to church to serve the Lord, but I also take those opportunity to dress my best (suit & tie) and test my best fragrances out. My issue is that I get alot of "you're dressed nice" or "I like your shirt and tie" but I rarely get "I like your colonge" or you smell good. How can I get more compliments on my smell?
Hey doc, does it also matter what kind of shaving foam I use? I just bought some non-scented showergel and bodymilk. I usually put some hair styling products aswel, but that shouldn't eliminate the fragrance right?
A couple of points, there is a book,La Seduction, by Elaine Sciolino. About differences of French and Americans and chapter 9 a french woman tells her that Americans wear to much perfume, general I know read the book, a good read. I consider myself a collector now I watch most of the frag. You Tubers and within my budget if they give a good review I buy, I rotate daily. I'm not out looking for "panty droppers" if get a comp. on one i don't stop useing the rest though I may take note of it.
great video man :) the high part made me laugh. but quick question. would u wear the one by dolce and gabbana in the summer and how many sprays do u usually wear. also what are your thoughts on diesel on the brave. i'd love to see a review or hear your thoughts :) from a loyal subscriber :) keep it up
@robes08 sent me here ! I can't believe I've never stumbled across your channel @dracdoc. You're an absolute genius, amazing nose and heaps of knowledge.
Hey Drac Doc! I was wondering if you could do a review on Perry Ellis Black For Him. It's not 360 Black. But yeah, I would like to know your thoughts about this cologne. Thanks!
Another question Doc, are you particular about the shelf lives of fragrances u buy, or do you overlook them?. Fragrances are very expensive here in Ghana (a cheap cologne like Nautica Blue could cost as much as 65 dollars here) I'm not kidding....so sometimes i feel i need value for my money and wouldnt want to throw a "fortune" on something that's probably "expired",lol. That raises this question, "Do fragrances really expire within their usual shelf lives (2-3years)"? Thank you so much Doc!!!!
I'm wondering now. I'm 16, when i go to school i usually wear jeans, and t-shirts or a long sleeve. To school i wear L'eau D'issey and Love & Luck.(summer) Does this match? If i go to school in cooler times, Maybe I would go with Green Irish Tweed. Match? Parties or simply hang around friends, with alot of people, (small party), i would go with Pure Malt. Match? I do want to match, thats why i ask. I dont want to smell "wrong" compared to my look.
helo drac doc great video as usual tell me if someone wearing a beard are there special note to consider with the fact you have beard? wich category and notes of fragrances are more "adapted" with beard
17:19 Precisely. If you really want to get compliments, you need to be 1) confident 2) likable (you act the part) 3) dressed well. Cologne is a hint that leads you to the whole picture. When people see you and smell you, they make a judgement. All cologne does is make that judgement more focused on your current presence. It's memory complex, really, a little layer of thought, that augments who you are particularly at that instance. dracdoc
Sometimes a scent that you wear can smell either good or crappy on you. Usually when I wear Yves l'homme to work I got compliments but the other day it reeked on me...how did that happen.
S'up Doc, this question isn't really about this video but b4 that, i would like u to know how popular u are in my part of the world, I'm in Ghana (West Africa). Anytime you're reviewing a fragrance, u only make mention of climates that we down here in sub-saharan Africa are not familiar with. Here, we only got the "wet" n "dry" season ,so its difficult sometimes tellin if a particular fragrance would fit our climate. Could you pls consider our climate in your reviews? Thanks
