Wondering what to do with your old Spray & Grow Mushroom Kit? Maybe it's grown mushrooms once, twice, or three times on your kitchen counter but you're tired of it taking up space and wondering if it's finished producing mushrooms.
North Spore Spray & Grow Kits: northspore.com...
In this video we'll show you how to get the most out of your Spray & Grow kit by putting it outdoors and using it to inoculate other materials. Often this will result in subsequent mushroom fruitings! We got successful secondary outdoor growth from our Lion's Mane, Golden Oyster, Pink Oyster, and Blue Oyster mushroom kits using these methods.
Use your mushroom kit to grow mushrooms:
00:07 by placing it in a shady outdoor location outside of its box
00:34 by burying it in your vegetable garden
01:24 by breaking it up into containers with straw in your garden
02:06 and as an addition to wood chip or straw mulch

Not only are they the best quality spray and grow type kits I've ever used, and at a great price, but they also take the time making a video showing how to use the cheap beginner product for much longer

Glad we caught you! Like what's said in the video: it's not as reliable as a fresh bag of spawn, but you might be able to get a lot more mushrooms by doing something with it outdoors! good luck and let us know how it goes!

What a cool video 🙌🏻 I’ve moved to a different country and brought some dried up beech chips from my formal garden to see if I could restart my p. cyanescens patch again. In the mean time I’ve cut up some fresh and dead oak branches to small chips, and mixed it with the dried up beech chips in a new patch. I really hope to will work and getting an active patch again around autumn. Keep up the good work guys!

Does this only work with used oyster mushroom kits or can this also be used for shiitake? love you guys
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 4 года назад
Shiitake *might* get more growth if you put your spent block someplace shady without breaking it up (like the lion's mane kit in the video). It can make great mulch, but won't grow any more mushrooms using that method. Oysters are definitely the best family of mushrooms for getting subsequent outdoor growth!

I received two kits from my daughter for Christmas. I’m so excited. When you put them outside after growing indoors how do you know that what you get is ok to eat. Since the constantly damp soil there could bring in other kinds of mushrooms that might not be safe to eat. How likely is this to happen.
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
Other mushrooms are very unlikely to happen! What we send you is already fully colonized with the species you selected and at that point, contamination risk is very low. It's important to familiarize yourself with the physical characteristics of the things your are growing. Just like with plants. If you want to discuss this further, please email us at info@northspore.com.

Love this... Yes, hardwood chips but will growing under citrus trees be successful? What are the maximum temperatures that mushrooms will tolerate? I am in Australia and temperatures in the temperate zone can fluctuate from 15c to 28c in spring and in the summer 22c to 32 often with some extreme days to 40c+. Would love a reply, and, thank you for your work and knowledge.
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
The citrus trees shouldn't harm the bed. Those temperature can cause problems for some species and others might thrive. Once you get to 40c or so, pretty much anything can just get fried. Shady trees, shade cloth, and plenty of water are your friends. For warmer weather hardy species, look to the Pink Oyster and Almond Agaricus.

Hello! thanks for the video, very practical. I harvested my Lion's Mane mushrooms once from a growth kit then the whole bag just shrank not sure if it's due to low humidity. I bought some Fast Fruiting Mix (50% oak,50% soy hull) thinking to break the growth kit and mix with it. Would I be able to harvest one more time if I do this?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Год назад
Moisture and loss of biomass to the mushrooms are at play here. You could use it as spawn as you describe, that could work ok, but isn't likely to work super well especially since it won't be very clean. We recommend either soaking a block to rehydrate or using it to grow more outside: northspore.com/blogs/the-black-trumpet/what-to-do-with-your-mushroom-grow-kit-when-its-done

@NorthSpore

They will not grow forever. They will grow until their food source is exhausted. That can take a long time, but yields will diminish and time between crops will rise.

Sooo if my kids have a back to roots mushroom kit... i could use my hardwood mulch ( un treated) ... put it in a bucket with some boiling water and mulch a corner of the yard...top with the crumbled spawn...and then more of the mulch and if its shaded and cooler grow more mushrooms? Will the wood chips allow more fruitings than sawdust or straw?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore Месяц назад
Yes you can do that, you don't even need to boil the wood chips as long as they are fresh hardwood. Oyster mushrooms will grow on almost anything! Wood chips and sawdust offer more nutrients than straw, but you can always do a mix of all 3!

For the hamper/straw method will it work with lions mane mushrooms? Or any other variety besides oysters?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 2 года назад
Nope, sorry. Lion's mane isn't a good candidate for that method. Oysters are by far the best for this method. If the straw was chopped well, perhaps chestnut would work too, though I haven't seen it.

Is it okay to just work the kit into the ground out of the box or should I do a few session inside to build up its health
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 4 года назад
It will definitely work used as spawn, but if that's your intention it would be better to purchase a bag of sawdust spawn instead. It will have more vitality for outdoor growing.

How do I "replant" my harvested "Lion's Mane"?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 7 месяцев назад
If you're asking about replanting the Spray & Grow Kits, this video goes right into that. If you want to literally use the mushrooms you harvest to plant more mushrooms, it's more complicated. You can take a piece of the mushroom, put it on agar to spread mycelium and then take pieces of that to colonize prepared grain. This grain can be used outside or inside to inoculate sawdust spawn, which is more commonly used outside. Check out our website for more info on all this!

Can you store several boxes over winter for spring and summer?
@NorthSpore
@NorthSpore 4 года назад
If the kit has been harvested two or three times before the start of winter it may be hard to hold on to it over the winter indoors. The boxes start to deteriorate and you'll probably get sick of looking at them. If it stays below freezing over winter in your area you could take the bags out of the boxes and keep them outdoors and hope for early spring growth.
