G'day from Australia 🇦🇺. I love watching alone and what's it's about. I'm a fisherman and camper. Haven't done hunting but would love to try this out. Great information and video
First off you guys are a light in a dark spot...If i ever have the incredible chance too truly be challenged. I'd try being a mirror of you guy Great video!!
Thanks dave...I've been filling out the casting call past 3 years...I'm just a average joe....construction worker...that love the out doors....shelter...water ...fire...and common sence....
@@off-gridhillbillystyle3735 go to there website...you have to to a self interview...tell them about your self...what your capabilities are...also half to video yourself making a shelter..and video yourself making a fire.....short and sweet..they just want to see what you can do before you go out and be screwed not knowing how to do nothing..
How do you get on the series on to the island and what are the stipulations you have to follow and everything can you send that information to me I'm interested
Dave this just may put a spring in your step: I just got into RU-vid a couple weeks ago, and although I have other favorites, notably Far North Bushcraft and Survival and Survival Russia as well as Girl in the Woods (incidentally how I found your channel), tonight I just finished watching your last video I had not seen. This is the first time I have ever watched every video a person has made, giving you a unique status in my RU-vid experience. I may complete other channels but there will never be another first! Thanks to you and Brooke as well for sharing. When I was 9 I moved from Alaska to Michigan, so I’m sure you understand how well I relate to both of you. Cheers!
Wow, I feel truly honored! Thanks for taking the time to tell me. I don't know if anyone ( except me) has ever watched all of my videos. LOL!! Thanks !
I must say you and Brooke had an amazing cabin on season 4 I just sent my application and questionnaire in this would be a dream come true I love alone and thank you so much for all the tips stay safe and keep enjoying life
My pa was a special forces. Caught a 15ft hammerhead shark. Well hooked up never landed it. Almost lost n ear while climbing tree. Got some gnarly pics. Big lesson learn, and shows ive learned my lesson sorta. I got good storys.
Man, I am trying so hard to get on the show. I genuinely want this. I can't run my farm without a huge cash infusion in the next couple of years. I know it's a long shot but I do think I could make it. Thanks for this video.
Both you and your wife need to compile a book.. a biographical tapestry of know how.. to what you do and did.. before and after ... canoeing, fishing & hunting, video editing, internet, research, practical stuff to what you need in any situation, knots (tent Rope, fishing, boating).. homestead, raising a family and ofcourse bush-crafting... it will be an interesting read... being a librarian i can say.. people in parts of the world still rely on books and magazines.. even if the magazines are phhfff 50 years old.. that is sill written word & was someone practical work. Thanks for the tips.. stay safe.. GOD BLESS
Excellent information I greatly appreciate that! My biggest question however, do you send the email with an attachment to your RU-vid channel/Audition Video? Or do you just send an introduction email, wait for a contact then show them your RU-vid? Not sure what the proper etiquette is in this situation when applying.
If I was 20 or 40 years younger I might be interested. I think the #1 reason they wouldn't want me for a television show is... I'm not a talker. I can easily go days or weeks without speaking, I've gone as long as two months. "I never learned anything while I was talking." -- Bing Crosby
I used to teach television production at our local community college, and did seminars in the summer at a couple universities, but I was never in front of the camera. The closest, I guess, was a few years back a friend of mine was going out looking for Sasquatch evidence, I went with him as cameraman for a web series thing he was working on. Sometimes I would turn the camera on myself and comment on what he had just said or done, and he ended up using some of that footage.
I wish Alone had been around when I was at least 20 yrs younger, but I don't think I have the endurance it would take now days. I really enjoy watching you guys though.
I think Sam winning this season shows that bushcraft as a “course of study” is not necessary to win the contest. That isn’t to say he can’t build (shelters, traps), use a knife, or make a fire-clearly he can do all that because he DID all that, but he did it because he was living out there, not because it’s some kind of art. I only learned the term bushcraft in the last few years, but I’ve been camping all my life, and we had knives and axes then too. I think Ted and Jim said it best after they won: “it’s about who can suffer the longest.” I mean, hell, they slept on the ground under a tarp and ate bagsful of “sea bugs” in order to survive. As far as I’m concerned anybody who lasted two weeks or more is a certified badass. I’m doing a solo overnighter this weekend and I’ll be glad to get home and take a shower after that. Thanks again for the insight, Dave-although I have no desire to be on the show, I would kill for a similar type of experience-minus the cameras.
I think we look at things the same way. I also never heard the term "bushcraft" until a few years ago, and it has been boiled down since then to almost a "college" course. When I hear someone talk about the proper way to use a bowsaw or talk about the minute differences between Japanese Pruning saws.......well I just tune that noise out. I know a few folks who have spent major time in the bush, trapping and mushing dogs etc....and their gear is junk, and they don't give a hoot what some survival instructor thinks is the best grind on a knife.
I hear you, brother. Yours is a much needed voice in the RU-vid community of survival “experts.” While I like good tools just as much as the next guy, it’s not the gear that gets us outside. I just spent the weekend in a $50 Colman tent, and it did the same thing a $500 Big Agnes tent would do. I’m just not willing to spend stupid money on gear when I can get essentially the same thing for a lot less. Anyway, thanks for your perspective.
Hey! Are you guys still in Fox? I'm out on CHSR. This video was pretty eye opening. I've been applying to Alone for two years now with no replies. I think that I am really glossing over the questions in the form that they send. I would appreciate some feedback or some tips about it, if at all possible. Thanks and you two are awesome!
Great video. Interesting things you talked about but the backstory is good, if you sent a video of you showing different skills then you might get near to being picked but would probably fall down when they asked what else you can do. You said about having made videos of previous adventures and that goes farther than just a skills video. Survival schools can only teach you things where you are other than the international skills. I mean you can't teach what to eat if it isn't available. You see it with some contestants who come prepared for living where they come from then are dumped into a wilderness where some of their equipment is useless. In Season 6 someone commented that looking at the other seasons taking a bow was the last weapon you wanted as in most areas they were useless unless you wanted to expel tons of energy making a fire. Thanks for this video, it answered some questions I had wondered about myself. Bob
Hey Dave have you ever had problems in your log cabins due to shrinking or expanding due to season change or drying? I heard a commercial builder discuss it and it seemed they needed special techniques to deal with it, for instance around windows... appreciate and experienced insight!
When you build with horizontal ones you have settlement issues, and you need to leave space above windows and doors for the logs to shrink and settle. About 1/4" per foot.
I've been Living the Off Grid Hunting, fishing, Making Trails since I was a kid. Any Native American who lives in the bush off the bush. Has a wicked Back ground story. Grand partners where Bush pilots here Canada in the 1950's. My Snowmobile trails have been added to NB Back ROAD MAP Books. I Don't have an audience. But Wish I had the 1 miilion. LOL OH well Retired at age 37. now 45 and living off the land for 9 years. No need for the million. LOL But would be cool to leave my knowledge for others.
Hey I got an email and been talking to a talent agency that I filled the application out for the show. They said I need to pay 347$ to get my team and go to boot camp. Is this really how it works?
NO! there is no "talent agency". The casting is all done by the production company ( Leftfield Pictures) they dont charge anything. This is a scam thats been going around
Great information Dave. Just finished watching Yukon River Run for the third time. I have a lot of respect for you and Brooke and all that you have done.
Hey Susan. Neil and Lauro are at the bridge right now with a brand new raft....I might go float a short leg of the trip with them. Rafting on the yukon is amazing.
Bushradical I would love to do that someday. It’s exciting there’s a new raft. Love the way all the tents look on the raft. You have had some amazing experiences and sounds like you’re about to have another one. Go for it!!
Only your third time watching YRR Susan? 2 more times and you will catch up to me! Awesome that your gonna go hook up with Neil and Lauro for a bit of a float Dave... Awesome!
Man oh man would I love to float down the Yukon on that raft. Wonder if they need a cook. I would bring my Whipple Ulu and everything would just come together perfectly...
Great Video. I think these are great tips to help anyone wanting to try to go on ALONE. I would love to try, but think my age, 58 would hamper that, but I would go in a second if I could. It is interesting that you make the point, that not all are super survival experts just guys that love the outdoors. I was lucky enough to have met Larry a couple years ago and been at a couple camps with him, it is cool to see real everyday people giving this a try. Thanks for the tips.
Thanx for the tips dave.... Iv always tried to stay under the radar. ...never wanted to put myself out there. .. (so they say)...but I know I have what it takes at least to be a contender....and I wil keep trying.....luv to see alone n newfoundland. ..
Newfoundland would be tough. Quebec, Ontario....I would love any of those areas. A hudson Bay Alone would be the bomb....I would so love to do that, I would feel so at home in that country.
Good on you Dave, great video again mate. question though - do you think not being situated in Nth America damages your chances - from you experienced? Im from Australia and not sure if the show takes people from O/S
.......here's the deal.....I don't think they are taking people outside north America. "Because" there is a good chance that the show will get franchised at some point, then there would be an ( Alone Australia) and an (Alone Europe) etc. There have been rumors for a few years about that.
@@Bushradical thats really interesting dude. and makes absolute sense. the australian bush is another level, the outback is insane. would make amazing viewing..similar with some locations in europe. if they were to do that, it would reinvigorate the show and allow it to claim 'global' cred.
Hey man. I sent in an application about a month ago. Should I send a edited video of some skill including a backstory or will they ask for something like that later?
So question, can anyone with experience just apply? Hopefully no one with little experience tries to take on that challenge... Or do they prefer people with RU-vid channels and more evidence to show that they're capable? I know a few RU-vidrs got asked to go on the show when it started airing. Wasn't sure how it works to be noticed.
Awesome info man I really appreciate it. Thank you. Being on alone is one of my life goals. I'm new to your channel and I am glad to have connected with you. You and your wife are an inspiration to many. I really do appreciate your input on this subject thank you
Hey Dave, took advice from last video you gave me and wasn't surprised it to be your number one tip. Its hard to speak to an audience that's not there and convince them your confident in your skills. How much further and to what extent can Alone be taken to keep everyone interested? Thanks for the help and keep up these information tips.
Nice to hear your inside take on Alone Dave. I never expected young Sam to win season 5. He never seemed able to get any food. Still happy for him and his family that he prevailed. I think you already won in life when you met Brooke! Best wishes.
Q: In hindsight, was the bar of soap a good idea or not? I’ve been in a lot of remote locations for extended periods of time and I knew exactly where you guys were coming from on that.
I neve felt like we were missing anything....I think we could have done just as well without the pan......and probably better if we would have taken 2 pots instead of a pan and a pot. But, as for the soap, I would take it again in a heartbeat. We couldn't keep weight on over the long haul, but we had a great time, and the soap was a wonderfull thing to have.
Great video Dave. I've had a channel on RU-vid for a couple of years and it's given me a great appreciation for everyone who has gone out on Alone, and all of the many RU-vidrs out there. Thanks for the great content. - Josh
Do you keep yourself better equipped when in the woods for those "What If" scenarios should happen to pop up. If it were me in the woods for a period of time, I would be like Mr. Gadget.
Great tips! A large part of why I created my channel is one of the tips you hit on! I, as many; would love the chance to be on Alone and I think you are correct with the perspective of getting to know a camera and at least basic editing. I figure starting early will help for a couple years from now when I will be in a life position to allow me to get on the show! Thank you for sharing!
Thks, Dave....will have to check iMovie out. It certainly seems to work for your videos, which we always enjoy. Very much enjoy your insight into Alone, one of my favorite TV series. Can't wait until next season, wondering where it will take place.
Great tips! I've always wondered about the process. I liked the encouragement to just be who we are because in the end when a person is refined/broken down by the Alone experience like going without food, coming to terms with the possibility of animal attacks and even missing family, you will be exposed for who you really are. So why make that a surprise to everyone in the first place? The biggest challenge for most Alone participants is eventually the lonliness, how does one prepare for that? (Rhetorical question)
Thanks for this video. I thought it was pretty cool of you to do this for us. I'd like to go on alone at some point. when they pick you for the initial Camp, how much notice do you have to put your Affairs in order? What was your experience?
Hello Dave, thank you for sharing your fine video. I really enjoyed it. I just subscribed to your channel; therefore, I will not miss any of your future videos. Be safe out there. 🤗
They called and gave us all a heads up and asked who was interested in going. Then they picked a few people they thought would round the 10 spots out the best. I would have loved to go.
There are no two people I'd rather see repeat on Alone, than you and Joe Robinet. Alas, Joe has said that he doesn't think he has enough body fat to endure the ordeal, considering the lack of food as the season progresses. I just love the style you both use in sharing your videos. Please keep them coming, Dave.
Good information Dave love to watch but I ain’t going no damn where lol I liked the Yukon river run just as good as alone my health is shot lol I’m not a couch potato I squirrel hunted Saturday killed 7 but had to eat pills had chest pain but I relished every minute of it I love eating squirrel I can eat the whole pot when my first teeth started pokin through mom would feed me squirrel they was three old squirrel hunters kept me in good supply lol always wanted to go to Alaska but I’ve waited to long so I watch everything I can keep making them videos you and Brooke their awesome
Hey Dave, good tip about getting used to taking video, that's pretty big. I know Brooke is used to doing video and wondered why she didn't get much air time, my thoughts were that maybe she didn't submit much, I dunno, she hasn't talked about it much. Zack Fowler did a cool video about making a submission video for the show. It was pretty interesting. Check it out if you can. Stay awesome.
On an aside, I'm going to be building a home from storage containers, because I just don't have it in me to cut down, debark, and mill trees (not a tree hugger, just seems like a lot more work that I am prepare to endeavor). I just recall your video where your tent shelter was trashed, and thinking a storage container would be a great way to keep your stuff secure. It's bear proof! Seems like your log cabin is pretty well established though.
Yes exactly. lol Weather proof, fire proof, water proof, bear proof... It sound ridiculous the first time you hear about it, but you can make an epic cabin with them. Can build on posts, and the real cost savings is in the hidden costs of maintenance, and time. You can build a home in months instead of years, and build your doors/windows just inside the doors, so you can insulate the doors, and they would still be functional for securing the home, or for buckling up for warmth when winter or night hits. You've got your thing going with logs, and you're fantastic at it though. Maybe you could make one for when the kids grow up, and you don't wanna process logs. lol
Shipping container structures are an outstanding idea. They do have draw backs. Research very thoroughly what you intend to do and look for others that have done it before. See what problems they ran into and adjust your plans accordingly. If you plan on burying one in the ground like some people do. Be very careful about your plans. I have seen several videos where the containers either crushed due to weight of the dirt or rusted out because of ground moisture.
Burying a container is silly, they are not designed for lateral loads (backfill or earth). Basements in cold weather/wet environments are silly. I'm gonna build it on concrete reinforced pillars prolly 2 ft off the ground. Going to use 2 or 3 containers on the outside (40 ft High Cube) of a with hollow core/concrete pre-cast planks in the middle (24x40ft total floor space) for the floor and roof (2,640 sq ft). I can build a 2nd or 3rd story on top if I want or need more space.
Try hards remind me of those train wreck American Idol auditions. Desperation is a HUGE turnoff. Nobody roots for try hards outside the Special Olympics. Personality is the key, as well as a compelling story to tell. You guys were characters on a show. Being interesting makes for better TV and is more compelling than being skilled. Great advice. I keep looking for updates on your home. There are lots of channels making log cabins, few of them are as interesting or entertaining as your channel.
OHHHH.....you're spot on about the american idol comparison! Good analogy. As for the cabin videos.....I have been super busy lately, but I am shooting videos of my progress on the cabin.....what little of it there has been, LOL
