If you have experienced the freeze response from emotional trauma, whether periodically through your life or as a perpetual adult experience (one possible manifestation = chronic fatigue), you know all too well the misery that is the experience of being in freeze. And you also know that getting out of the freeze response is very difficult and can be impossible if we don't understand what's happening or what our bodies need to get out of it. In this video, I explain what I have found to be the most effective way to get out of the freeze state: get to the ACTUAL EMOTION that's underneath - the emotion that our bodies are dissociating from. Because the freeze response is a dissociated state. We're dissociating from our emotion(s) because we've been conditioned from our childhood to believe they're not safe to feel, let alone express. So the answer to getting out of freeze is to get to the REAL emotion... but that's easier said than done!! In order to do that, we need to create fierce safety in the body (visceral safety) and the mind (non-judgement, acceptance, compassion). This takes practice and working to wire these things in BEFORE trying to get to the emotion because the emotion needs a safe place to go and be met by loving connection to self in order to process and heal. For this, we need a practice of Havening Techniques (a somatic practice sending messages of love, safety, and connection through touch) and education on emotions, attachment, etc. to do the work of de-shaming our emotions and learning how to disarm shame and judgement in the body in order for the emotions to start to flow through us. Once you get to the actual emotion, you will start to feel the body start to unfreeze!!
Getting to the actual emotion may not happen every time, however, and especially not in the beginning. But you can start to get out of the freeze response simply by the repeated acknowledgement of what is ACTUALLY happening - that we are inside a wound right now...this state is a wounded/triggered state. It's not US. It's a wounded part of us that's taking over right now. Just that acknowledgement will start to unfreeze us if we keep reminding ourselves of that truth because we're are actually seeing our inner child's emotions, even if we can't feel them yet, and that's exactly what our body/inner child needs. ❤️❤️
