What about rules and restrictions on when college/university coaches can contact recruits? Like are there minimum grade/ages before they can respond or move forward with recruitment? I guess on that front, when is it appropriate to think about initiating contact with coaches? Jr high? 9th grade? Junior year?

Yes I just talked to a player who got drafted into the Colorado Rapids this past draft(Jacob Hauser Ramsey) . I asked him for his story and he told me that his grades didnt allow him to go d1 straight from high school, so instead he went to play JUCO and then he transferred to UCONN where he finished school and got drafted

Great video as always! Very informative. And as a coach knowing this information to pass on to my players is very useful. Couple questions tho. As a player if you arent at that top level should you still do the work for a junior colleges as well and are ID camps still something they should be going to?

At what point in high school would you say it is too late to contact a college coach about recruitment?
@nemo.0755
@nemo.0755 5 лет назад
Senior Year, I'm a sophmore right now. Haven't contacted any college coaches yet directly but during my Junior Yr i most definitely will. And its never really "too" late. But as long as you're a solid player, good resume, and have the TIME to contact them, then u should be fine

I’m a Jr in high school and soccer season is about to end with like 1 game and 1 showcase , I have no footage and this season is basically over. Is it to late to start doing this as a Senior
@nemo.0755
@nemo.0755 5 лет назад
Try to do club during the summer or even NOW. You need footage, so idk maybe club right now and throughout the summer. And then senior year, MAKE SURE TO GET YOUR FOOTAGE MATE. Have a friend or relative film your games. I'm a sophomore right now so idk have that much experience with all this recruitment stuff lol. I just feel like i have to say something lmfaoo

Try getting tryout. Or talk to a jr college coach and if you do good at a jr college you can possibly get D1 and D2 offers. It is late but anything is possible if you really want it.

Any thoughts on kids not playing their first year of school. Playing adult leagues, etc, and focusing on grades locally to reduce cost and then looking to go finish school and play. Is this a bad decision and do you think it hurts their chances. Also, does it effect their playing eligibility?

United FC (Bahamas) has the most U17 WNT players (7), but getting these ladies noticed by US College is difficult because we have limited resources. What can we do to improve the chances of our players getting seen?

Really great information Javi! If kids and parents are willing to do the footwork, they can really improve their chances of playing college soccer. Do you feel making a phone call, after an email, allows a kid to stand out a bit? I know it's awkward, even more so in today's digital world, but I figured it would be something that might allow them to stand out. But I don't know how coaches would feel about that.
@nemo.0755
@nemo.0755 5 лет назад
No phone calls. First off they dont know your number so they might ignore it lol. They're busy all day, they don't have the time to be answering and speaking to a player on the phone. Email is wayyy better its the only way a coach is going to take you legit

Good vid Javi! I've got a couple of questions as a international interested in the collage route. When talking about school and stuff here in Sweden we don't talk about GPA and stuff like that so I don't really know what to write in terms of that so the coaches actually understand where i am on that level. And secondly in Sweden we don't have like high school sports. But when you're going into gymnasium (16-19 years old) which is probably like high school you could specify your schooling so I'm going to the biggest gymnasium in terms of soccer in Gothenburg which is the second biggest city in Sweden but I don't know how much credibility that actually has in American coaches minds. Should I like explain to them or just write that I'm going to that gymnasium who has that coach etc. Thanks again!
@filipsandebert847
@filipsandebert847 5 лет назад
And one more thing. I'm 26 right know and in my first year at this gymnasium but when I graduate I will be turning 19 that year, is that too late for a collage freshman? Or I'm a like to old?

Coach Javi---- My son has had no luck in the college recruiting process. Two Division III schools have said while he is a good player, there are other kids who are slightly better at his position. He is on the small side 5' 7''. He has been on high school varsity for three years and has been playing top level travel soccer for the past 8 years. It appears to me coaches are looking for tall, fast and athletic kids and not necessary kids who have a high soccer IQ (tactical and technical) . Amy thoughts or suggestions? The coaches are seem to be secretive on what they are looking for in a young player. Just not sure what to do next.
@CoachJavi
@CoachJavi 5 лет назад
Hey man great question. My suggestion is to keep looking. Not every school is going to be a good fit. I have many friends coaching collegiately and a lot of them in d3 are often looking to take anyone they can get because it’s hard enough already to recruit without athletic scholarships. If he is a good player he will find a school. I don’t believe that they aren’t looking for players with a high IQ. In any school, players with a good soccer brain will always stand out. Keep searching man, I’m sure you will find something. It takes a lot of reaching out but it pays off in the end.

Quality content as usual Coach Javi! I’m a sophomore in highschool right now coming off of a starting varsity season in MA (CDM-7 assists 1 goal) I have a showcase preseason tournament coming up for my club team in about three weeks, and I’d like to reach out to some of the schools in my region to try to get some looks from college coaches in my region. How should I go about asking coaches to actually come to watch me play? Should I be adding many of the aspects mentioned in this video in my initial emails or should it include different information? Thanks again Coach Javi.

Coach Javi, why is it here in the states going to college is stressed to move ahead in a soccer career. Meanwhile in other countries 15 and 16 year olds are starting their pro careers? I have a 7 year old who has been playing since he was 4. He has been in a soccer academy. He's told me he wants to get paid to play soccer, and does not want to work like I do. Looking forward to your response.

Football is more emphasized in different nations. For example in England, the people live, eat and breath football but in the US we have other sports that are seen as better. Also the US has laws against players being professionals before the age of 18. Another bad thing the US does is the MLS Draft. It makes it harder for talent to arise. But the biggest issue is the pay to play system the US has. Soccer is a very expensive sport if you want to play for club and highschool. Most club seasons are around 1 thousand dollars and college is expensive as well, especially if you don’t get a D1 Scholarship. D2 and the NAIA can give athletic scholarships but not many and D3 can only give Academic scholarships.
