Carpet beetles can be settled in homes for years before people know they are present. Keep in mind that the larvae will feed on keratin in animal and human by-products like fur, leather, dander, hair, etc. The adult carpet beetles feed on plant pollen, so they can be brought in on flowers or come in from a flowering shrub or plant near a window or door. We have a great Carpet Beetle Control Kit here that includes some great products for treating for this pests: www.domyown.com/carpet-beetle-control-kit-p-18642.html

My 1st experience with carpet beetles was when I lived in an apt. I had some clothes folded and put away in my closet on the carpet and there they were underneath my clothes. Apts and homes should not have carpets esp. in the closet of all places.

Ok, so last week I found a large amount of larvae and shedding under my cats dry food container in the laundry room. I cleaned that up and found a bunch under the dryer as well. I basically went into crazy cleanup mode and moved out the washer, dryer, and completely swept up/mopped that room, then I applied Ortho home defense to the entire area and under the washer/dryer. I also vacuumed out the dryer and the vent tube thing. I then went to the kitchen and swept under the stove and fridge (found a few larvae under there as well). The remainder of my week involved me spraying every corner and base board with insecticide, putting down powders, and doing heavy vacuuming. I also went back over the rooms and mopped and wiped down everything with rubbing alcohol. Everything is spotless now, and I'm pretty positive I removed and cleaned all sources of food. That being said, it's been a week since the initial finding of this, and every day I see 1-2 larvae on my wall. I'm not sure if that's normal or not and I'm just not waiting long enough or what. I'm not sure what else to do.

We are sorry to hear you are having a problem with carpet beetles. First, you should choose an insecticide labeled for carpet beetles on our website here... www.domyown.com/carpet-beetles-c-141.html. If you choose to use an insecticide that does not include an IGR, add an IGR like Gentrol to your insecticide. www.domyown.com/gentrol-igr-concentrate-p-604.html If you are using a liquid insecticide, mix the insecticide and IGR in a sprayer with water. Read the product labels to determine the amount of water and product you will need. After filling, replace the cap on the sprayer and shake the sprayer to mix your insecticide, IGR, and water together. Place glue board traps in your laundry room and other dark areas to catch adult carpet beetles. Glue traps www.domyown.com/catchmaster-100i-insect-monitors-100-boards-300-monitors-p-2397.html are also a great way to monitor your infestation. In the weeks that follow your treatment, you should see less and less carpet beetles on your traps. If you continue seeing activity after 21 days, retreat.

What precautions should be taken when reentering the home after Nyguard spraying? Wiping kitchen counters? Washing bedding that was out in the open during spraying? Wiping desk and table surfaces? Please advise. Thanks!

NyGuard Plus can be applied for carpet beetle treatments with a sweeping motion as a surface spray to carpet, rugs, closets, baseboards, upholstered furniture, and around the edges of carpet. Always wear gloves and long sleeves when applying NyGuard Plus, or any insecticide in or around your home. Do not let children or pets into treated rooms until the solution has dried (about 1-2 hours). This product should not be applied in any way that could possibly contaminate water, food or any food handling surfaces or utensils. Please refer to the manufacturer's application instructions, and only use as directed on the product label. www.domyown.com/msds/NyGuard-Plus-Label1.pdf

Wash all of the fabrics in your home that you possibly can and dry them on high heat (over 120 degrees F) to kill any carpet beetle insects, larvae, or eggs. The high heat of the dryer is important as that is what will kill the carpet beetles. Don't forget clothing, bedding, towels, and other linens. You can dry clean any items that are unable to be washed, such as those made of silk, or place items directly into the dryer. Dry cleaning will also kill any insects, larvae, or eggs that are hiding in these fabrics. Onslaught Insecticide can be applied to wood floors. That being said, it is always best to do a test application first, as some types of wood floors are more prone to staining than others. In most cases, Onslaught should not leave any visible residue behind when used as directed. www.domyown.com/onslaught-insecticide-p-376.html

We recommend that you stay vigilant about vacuuming and removing clutter. You can also use a residual insecticide for prevention of carpet beetles and other common pests. Adult carpet beetles will feed on pollen, so be sure to check fresh cut flowers that may be brought into the house and flowering plants that may be near doors or windows. I found two or three adults under my chest of drawers earlier as well as one live adult and a couple of shed skins, I haven't noticed any larvae though or obvious damage. Also haven't ever seen any by my window or in other rooms. I've been putting off cleaning my bedroom floor for months and under the drawers was horribly dusty and full of old paper. I've binned everything from under there any thoroughly vacuumed but should I be worried? I don't keep clothes except in the top drawer which I recently cleaned anyway, there is no sign of them in other areas of my room and i have a high sleeper bed so I doubt any could be in their. Will repeated vacuuming get rid of them?
@domyown
@domyown 3 года назад
Vacuuming daily can greatly help with your carpet beetle issue as the vacuum sucks the adult carpet beetles and the larvae from the carpet. I would also suggest washing and drying, on high heat, all of the fabrics from the room to kill any carpet beetles and eggs. It may also be beneficial to treat the room with an insecticide dust and an insect growth regulator (IGR). Please take a look at our guide on Carpet Beetle Control www.domyown.com/carpet-beetle-pest-control-a-220.html for more information on treatment methods if you have not already.

Hey I just message someone because we have the same problem… Try getting the flat part of the vacuum extension put it on and then use that flat extension of the vacuum and try to slip under your baseboards because that’s their favorite place to hide. Try going into any crevices on your stairs which is also their favorite part to come out and feed on and also check your furniture like your couch. I sometimes go out in the middle of the night when they like to come out (the larvae) to see if they’re hiding in the couch because that’s when they usually come up and that’s when I’ve noticed them so now we’re gonna have to get rid of our couch. We’re also going to have to now call an exterminator to spray some insecticide but what I’ve been hearing from other people that doesn’t seem to work.

Most homes have carpet beetles. You can only control them but never get rid of them. If you live the minimalistic lifestyle-with hardly any belongings and no carpeting and furniture is high off the floor and no clutter on the floor including shoes, and you dust and wash floors regularly including under your fridge and stove and keep your window screens on then you might be lucky to not have these pests.

I just moved to a new apartment and found a few adult beetles and larvae. The apartment is pretty sealed but they seem to be coming mostly from behind my radiator which is right below the window so I am assuming that they just live in the walls as the apartment is still pretty empty. I'm down to order Nyguard Plus and everything but what can I do if they actually reside within the walls, in there a chance to get rid of them or do I need to accept I will deal with them as long as I live here ? So far I sprayed with Demand CS and dusted with Delta Dust, not sure this will be enough.
@domyown
@domyown 3 года назад
If the beetles are living inside the walls then dusting inside the wall voids would be your best option. Delta Dust or Cimexa Dust will be great options for you to use. Use of an IGR like Nyguard Plus would also be a great option to kill the larvae, so you are on the right track. @domyown
@domyown 4 года назад
Carpet beetles can be a tricky find, especially in older homes where there could be sources lurking under the house or hidden in wall voids or attics. If you are mostly seeing adult carpet beetles, you may want to check flowering plants indoors and also outdoors near the house. While the larvae feed on animal products like pet and human dander and wool rugs, the adults will feed on pollen. We have more tips in our Inspection Guide here: www.domyown.com/carpet-beetle-inspection-guide-a-695.html

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I still haven’t found the source. I don’t have any plants indoors and the backyard is almost just grass. I always find the adults (varied) on my kitchen floors or near the glass sliding door, does that mean the source is in that area? Recently I started seeing adult black carpet beetles on the second floor or on our stairs (which is the only thing that’s carpet in our house) and I’m really confused of what’s going on

@domyown
@domyown 3 месяца назад
Most of the products we recommend in our Carpet Beetle kits can be used in a home with pets as long as the label instructions are followed, and they are kept out of the treatment area while they are being applied, and until all surfaces have dried completely. We cannot speak specifically to rabbit safety or how sensitive they may be compared to dogs or cats around the dried chemical treated surfaces. You may want to speak to someone locally at a pet store or rabbit breeder, or to your vet, to see if they have any concerns or additional safety precautions you should take to ensure the pet isn't harmed.

Diatomaceous Earth is the BEST NATURAL THING EVER for any type of critters! (📌FOOD GRADE📌 for indoors, if you have pets, et.) Put some all around your molding on ALL the floor, under your bed, & around/in furniture. It's dusty at first, but I try to keep some under my mattress, on top of the pad, couch cushions, et. I try to make sure I put a coat around perimeter of my house once or twice a year too. People bathe their livestock in it to help with mites & other stuff. You can use it on pets for fleas, & the "food grade" is even safe for animals & us to consume! (It's supposed to be good for digestion.) I swear by this stuff lol. I've had 3 relatives that I had put some outside for various pests (ants, earwigs, etc), & literally the NEXT DAY 99% were gone! You can find it at most bigger stores like Walmart, on Amazon, + hardware & feed stores, & it goes a long way!

Carpet beetles can often enter the home from outside so checking around windows and doors for any cracks in weather stripping or gaps they could potentially enter through is one way to help make sure they don't continue to show up. Take any clothing you have that they have already infested, or that you think they could be within (typically wool type items or similar natural materials), and blankets, etc and inspect and clean them, and then seal them up in containers for a bit while you eliminate any existing in the home and furniture of the room. You can spray a product like NyGuard Plus www.domyown.com/nyguard-plus-p-2874.html or Gentrol Complete www.domyown.com/gentrol-complete-aerosol-p-17183.html along the baseboards and carpet edges, under furniture, and inside the crevices of drawers, etc. If you have any pets make sure their hair is being vacuumed regularly, and check for any birds nests on or next to the home that could be contributing to the population as they often feed on bird feathers and materials in their nests.

i bought a pure silk sheet which led to me finding a carpet beetle. i scared myself silly because i thought a bug was bitting me at night leading to an itchy dot that would take weaks to heal because it scares badly. turns out that carpet beetle larvae have spines or hairs on them that cause an alergic reaction when it makes contact with your skin. i found a single one on my bed and caught it thinking it was a cute tiny caterpillar. googled it and guessed it was a carpet beetle. i locked up my silk sheet in a bin and the 'bites' stopped appearing. summer came and the larvea became tiny beetles that i would end up killing one at a tiny as i see them fly around slowly. it was not an infestation because everything in my house is polyester or not natural since we live in the plastic age and the silk sheet was bought since it wouldbe the only natural thing i own. anyway, carpet beetles are gone this year and im too scared to take out my expensive silk sheet. (atleast i know its real silk and not a fake :D ) my dreams of having non synthtic carpets and other things like wool pillows has been put on hold simce im scared of carpet beetle infestations now tho since their 'bites' do serious harm to my skin. in case you were wondering, it causes a littler bump to rise up and its extremely itchy that you cannot prevent yourself from scratching. when the itch goes away it scares leaving an obviously discolored skin in a circle shape that represents where the entire bump was. and then it takes weeks/ months to fade away. this was my experience anyway. i have never had bed bugs or anything so it was a scary experience because idk what was happening.

i think i have synthetic carpet but the carpet beetle larvae were feeding on some pieces of cat food that were laying in hard to reach places. i do have a giant, real wool rug in the room next to it but i'm hoping they haven't reached there!

@@zamorak666avesatanas8 honestly, they mainly feed on natural fibers and can even eat human hairs and pet hairs?. i dont think the cat food is the problem if they really are carpet beetles or every home would have them if they fed on food scraps. . their food source is probably the wool rug or something else you have that is natural but im not sure.

Silver Beast i read elsewhere that they sometimes eat grains too. But I agree they were eating human hair & cat fur as those areas they are in were hard to vacuum

My vacuum bags cost $26 for six of them & Laundry is $1.75 per load. Not to mention time. I appreciate the advice but I can’t....afford. Since there are varying stages why would you go through washing and drying everything only to have her come up then reinvest everything again? I’ve been doing this for the past two months and I’m tired of it and it’s costing a fortune. What’s the best pesticide? Safe for cats is a requirement.

Washing and drying clothes will also kill any insects, larvae, or eggs that are hiding in the fabric. For indoor carpet beetle control you may want to consider a product such as Nyguard Plus. www.domyown.com/nyguard-plus-p-2874.html This product contains an insecticide to kill the roaming adults and an insect growth regulator to stop the harder to kill immature beetles from reaching a reproductive state which in turn will break the cycle of infestation. As an added bonus this product also contains a deodorizer for carpet applications.

This would be a less likely place to find carpet beetles unless perhaps there are pets that sleep their regularly and the rest of the room is already infested. Be sure that you have the correct identification before treating.

Carpet beetles will only infest wool carpets. Recommending treatments of synthetic carpets is a bit unethical. Also, you are recommending washing and treating all clothing, but only wool fabrics are food sources. This video needs more emphasis on feathers, horn, old pet foods and wool products.

We appreciate your feedback. This video is just one small resource we have available to our customers on our site that gives a base and general overview of treatments. We have a complete guide on how to Identify, Inspect, Treat, and Prevent carpet beetles in the home. One excerpt from our guide is below which goes over in detail the other areas that can be checked for infestation activity and signs. www.domyown.com/carpet-beetle-inspection-guide-a-695.html Carpet beetles are attracted to natural fibers. As their name suggests, they are attracted to carpet, but they can also be found near or on these other natural fibers: - Silk - Fresh flowers -Wool -Paint brushes - Pet fur and human hair Carpet beetles will typically stay away from synthetic fibers, but will become attracted to synthetic fibers if the fibers contain human or animal sweat, oil, or blood. They are attracted to flowers for their pollen and nectar. In fact, carpet beetles are commonly brought inside unknowingly in flowers. Be sure to check any flowers for carpet beetles before you bring them inside. Carpet beetles can also be found in dry stored food products like rice, grains, and dog food. If you suspect you may have a carpet beetle infestation, inspect the following items, especially if they are made of natural fibers: - Rugs -Carpets -Blankets -Furniture

@@switchunboxing I have never seen any research or valid reports from qualified entomologists that suggest that carpet beetles can feed on anything besides wool, silk fur or other animal products. My own colonies feed happily on fish food.

While they won’t cause damage, these buggers will 100% infest synthetic carpets. They feed on the dust and hair that’s left in the corners where the vacuum doesn’t reach. I’ve found them in on and between folded cotton clothes too although no damage.
