How do you get rid of Dandruff? I've been getting a lot of questions about Seborrheic Dermatitis (the medical term for dandruff) - what is it, why you get it and how to treat it - so I thought I'd try to answer some of these in this video!
There are a few reasons why you may get Dandruff - genetics and environment are usually the most common. But this is a VERY common condition that is very controllable and simple to treat.
Hope it's helpful!!
Thanks for your questions and keep them coming!!

I had a severe case of dandruff every single winter. I started using dandruff shampoos and didn't work. So I tought: well, let's wash them more often. I started washing them every day and things got even worse. My scalp was inflamated and irritated, i continuously started scratching over my ears and behind my neck. Then, understanding that wasn't caused by a fungus or something, I did some reverse engineer and I tought: well, let's do the exact opposite. I started washing my hair every 4-5 days using only cold water and minimal shampoo. After a month or so the dandruff totally disappeared and I finally feel good. Try!

@@macydiy9697 How exactly do you use apple cider vinegar? I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis about two years ago and I have scalp buildup, which flakes off from time to time, but eventually returns again. I suffered with bad dandruff for years. I tried everything. Then I tried tea tree oil. 10-15 drops in warm water. I wash my hair every 3-4 days. Ordinary reg shampoo. Rinse off then a final rinse with about 250mls with the tea tree oil. Immediate relief from itching, no more flakes. I really suffered with this condition to the point I stopped wearing black clothes. I wear black now with total confidence. No more white flakes

I realised that if I wash my hair too often I can get dandruff as well. So what I think is to wash your hair just in the middle required. I've figured out that for myself I have to wash them every two days, not more not less, and REGULARLY. Keep doing it. Because when I miss the cycle, I always get dandruff (especially when it's hot, I live in a tropical area, so it plays a lot in it)! So that's one idea of how I've got rid of them almost entirely (there's almost nothing now, unless I break the cycle of washing every 2 days) and my hair stay in good shape as well! PS: If you have lots of dandruff at the beginning, and you try my idea, do not tie your hair in any way! When your skin is almost cleared, you can start to tie you hair but not much. Let your hair and especially the skin of head, breathe. Otherwise if you tie your hair it will be more favorable for the dandruff to "live" because the area will have a higher temperature+less air. PPS: This all based on my experience and people around me. Maybe it will not work for people living in areas if big temperature differences? But maybe you can still try.

I mix 1/4 cup oil with 1tsp of boric acid powder I bought off Amazon. I put it on once or twice a day. This works for seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infections (baby cradle cap) etc. I am not a doctor and Boric acid is toxic if injested or absorbed. If you put the boric acid in water and apply I think I heard that it does get absorbed and that's no good. With coconut oil it just sits on the top of the skin. Also consider a coconut oil/boric acid scalp treatment for a week or so to help kill the fungus that causes seborrheic dermatitis. I have mine under control my 1. Eating gluten free 2. Vit D3/K2 liquid 2000 iu 3. Boric acid coconut oil when necessary or accidental eating of gluten. Good luck!

Wash your hair with water and lemon, so take a glass of water, add half or full slice of lemon juice in it, and massage that water into your scalp. Let it stay there for 10 minutes. Then go take a bath or shower, and wash your hair with cold water, to make sure the lemon is off your scalp. Do this every day, or three times a week, or however times you can manage. But in short amount of time after couple days of doing this, you will notice your dandruff going away. Lemon exfoliates your skin, kills any bacteria or fungus on your scalp, and removes all oil and residue in your hair and scalp. That is why it works. And once you notice no more dandruff, you can either stop this, or continue to apply this treatment once a week to keep your scalp and hair healthier.

Rahziman Rahman I didn’t try the lemon . But if you put half apple cider vinegar and half water in a bottle and apply it to your scalp in the shower and let it sit for 10-15 mins it will burn a little but it gets rid of dandruff . But recently what I’ve been using and what’s really working for me is aloe Vera juice I apply that on my scalp and hair after I shampoo and condition and it helps your hair stay moist ... and also jojoba oil is good for the scalp too . Very good to keep dandruff away
@rz9018
@rz9018 5 лет назад
@@Sagittariusave do you keep the jojoba oil on your hair or do you wash it after some minutes? Because for me, I have a hair loss problem too, and to combat that, I use peppermint oil + olive oil but the result of that, is that it feeds the dandruff and makes the hair so itchy.
@Sagittariusave

Rahziman Rahman the jojoba oil I put in my scalp after washing my hair and massage it in my scalp and leave it in there . And as days go by you can add more if you feel dryness on your scalp too . No need to wash until your next wash day and apply again

finally a dermatologist confirming I should wash as much as I need. I only recently found out I don't have dandruff but actually scalp eczema and have had it for 6+ years which caused my scalp to have pimples, scabs, a LOT of scabs actually and it was constantly BURNING. So it wasn't just dandruff, scalp eczema has dandruff as a possible side effect, but is not the same as dandruff, I just thought burning scalps were part of dandruff for years so that was NOT fun. The assistant doctor told me to shampoo LESS, only once a week! because I said my scalp has become way oilier since my scalp irritation started because washing it helped it calmed down so I slowly had to wash more which makes my hair get oily fast, but washing once a week never worked and made the burning worse, so now I wash whenever I notice my hair or scalp needs it, the medical shampoo I got also didn't work and at first was too weak and then started irritating my scalp aswell, so luckily I found a soothing DIY hair mask from flaxseed gel that I would apply focusing on my scalp area, and it got rid of most of my scabs :) It's still not 100% gone, but I might try to use coal tar once in a while to get a nice cleanse in there, as the flaxseed just helps with scabs and soothing, not really with the dirt. Atleast now I know that shampooing when needed is not dumb and my reaction was correct! :D

Shampoo products (like head and shoulders) that strips my hair and scalp of moisture seems to make it worst. Would you still call it dandruff or is it something else?

Definitely sounds more like sebhorric dermatitis. Does the dryness flake off and expose red, inflamed skin underneath? I have it and the last thing u want to do is dry it out. U need to balance ur hair. Try Denorex: Extra strength Dandruff shampoo and conditioner. Rub it in vigorously, leave on for 2-5 min, rinse and do it again. Then condition as u normally would. The conditioner in it only balances the drying ingredients. And if u get rly itchy between washes u can use Scalpicin Maximum Strength 1% Hydrocortisone liquid. U can douse ur head in the stuff and not worry about looking greasy and it’s AMAZING for itch relief!! :)

Baking soda mixed with water, apply with cotton pad, let sit 10-15 minutes. Rinse off. Also, 1 to 1 ratio of water to raw apple cider vinegar. Let set 15 minutes, at least, but preferably an hour. Rinse off. Repeat every day. This is what I do to control my severe seborrheic dermatitis. If I stop for a week, or more, everything from my neck to scalp will become itchy, bright red, and dandruff everywhere. Its gross. But, amazingly, if I do my 2 remedies regularly, I have normal skin. @@noahahmed8247 It depends upon how deeply fixed candida is into your system. Think of dandruff as a symptom of imbalance. Eliminating sugar and crappy fats whilst eating more vegetables might be enough. Whereas more severe fungal overgrowth might require prolonged fasts with targeted herbals to help clear it out. Going ketogenic would also starve the fungus of its fuel source. I switched to using Dr. Bronner's liquid soap to wash with (including hair) which is vlean, natural and doesn't leave skin suffocating and pore blocking deposits.

Serborrheic dermatitis is chronic its all hereditary in the families dna i have battled over 20 yrs it's not curable but treatable you can subside it not actually cure it i have been prescribed a prescription shampoo,steroid tablets it supposed to kill the root the of dermatitis fungus then it all would reoccur came back i was evening using 91% rubbing alcohol which does kills the germs when i applied to my scalp but it singed my hair caused thinning and dryness, how i keep the seborrheic dermatitis under control is i use a over the counter shampoo called dermatitis w\ blue lid not the pink lid you can purchase at wal-greens or cvs pharmacy stores also i use tsp's of baking soda mixed into my shampoo's and apple cider vinegar or yellow generic mouth wash also kills the bacteria and germs also mix or apply separately over scalp baking soda cuts out the infection scalp odor any peppermint oils,spearmint oils and lavender sooths the itchiness mixed with tee tree oil i also purchase 4 fl oz of tree tea antiseptic cream that does work sooths the itchiness on contact now brand 100% oils that you use for defusers that can be purchased at any herbal supplement store or occult store that sells all herbal supplements w\ using the mint oils i do suggest the now brand 100% pure oils i had to be placed on Xanax meds for anxiety to keep calm any stress,depression also is hereditary in families aggravates the such dermatitis issues on skin and sugar as we know in this era is number one cause of so many teeth and skin damages worst then prescription drugs so it seems that we consume on daily basis at times when i would sweat in the heat or rains my scalp would be wet and damp causes me irritations it can cause the scalp to mold cause itchiness and irritations especially when we women or men use hair product chemicals in our hair, the dermatitis shampoo itself sooths as well as any mint oils the scalp what helped me to grow or thicken my hair back out caused form the dermatitis conditions i use is castor oil mixed with mint oils, lavender soaps then i apply dermatitis shampoo then rinse out and at times i would use campho phenque used for pain and itch relief on my scalp would literally i would tear my scalp open caused by tenderness from constant scratching it all would go away and heal. i suggest do NOT shower in hot water it can also and does aggravates any skin irritations such as eczema, dandruff skin irritations all this what i use works for any skin irritations,itchiness bath or shower in cool or cold water. Also an idea is to use foot fungus creams,ointments apply to skin and any cooking lard,grease you can apply to skin it moisturizes the dry flaky skin.

My husband has a fairly large amount of patches of dandruff in his beard/head hair. He has seen a dermatologist and that's what he was told ( he also has eczema but he was told what's on his head and under his beard is not eczema). But, we usually shy away from prescriptions unless they are a last option, we believe that trying to solve the problem naturally first is healthier for our bodies in the long run (unless the ailment is a matter of life and death). Are there any natural alternatives that you can recommend before using prescription shampoos or topical steriods? My husband uses a topical steriod lotion for his eczema, but only when it get bad enough that our natural remedies don't work. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Also, could you try mentioning natural alternatives along side of conventional bio-med answers? I know a lot of people really do respect doctors, but wish they would suggest natural pathways of healing before going straight to prescriptions. Side note: we do use Melleluca and Lavender essential oils and those seem to help, but only sometimes.

The only dandruff shampoo that works for me is the one with ketoconazol. I was truly surprised by it's effect within a week. No more itching and flaking. Now I can go a week without washing my hair and still no flakes, even though by that time my hair would be oily and dirty. The lesson I learned was that dandruff is caused by fungal infection of the scalp. So use a shampoo that has an active ingredient that kills the fungal growth.
