Noticed your pets scratching an awful lot lately? Feeling like you’re getting bitten on the ankles! This could very well be a sure sign of an infestation. A flea problem can quickly escalate because a single female flea can lay up to 1,000 eggs in just 21 days.
We’re sure you’re wondering “But how did fleas get into my home in the first place?!”
Well, pets pick up fleas from contaminated environments, where untreated animals have been. 95% of a flea problem is in the environment and only 5% on the pets, something a lot of pet owners aren’t usually aware of. Flea eggs develop into larvae and then cocoons and new adult fleas hatch out of these cocoons when stimulated by a passing host, which they then jump on to.
There isn’t a need to panic. You can resolve it by carefully following the five simple steps we share in our video:
1. Make sure you use FRONTLINE® Plus every four weeks on all cats and dogs in your household.
2. Regularly vacuum any areas your pet goes, including the car, right into all those nooks and crannies, and wash your pet’s bedding every few weeks at 60 degrees Celsius to help reduce the number of eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment.
3. Use a household flea spray containing an insect growth regulator, such as FRONTLINE® HomeGard. This will kill adult fleas and larvae and also prevent eggs from hatching. Larvae like dark areas, and will try to hide from the light, so remember to spray those hard to reach places - under the sofa, between the cushions, any crevices in floorboards - not forgetting your car.
4. Allow your treated pet access to all areas. Your pet is now an active flea-killing machine. Don’t be alarmed! It just means that any new fleas hatching out and jumping onto your pet will be killed by FRONTLINE® Plus. But until the flea problem is resolved it is normal to see fleas on your pet.
5. You can encourage the pupae to hatch out by increasing the temperature in your house and also by boiling the kettle as they like warmth and humidity.
Getting rid of a flea infestation is straightforward but can take three months or more, so you need to be patient!
