As doctor passionate about skin care that delivers results and about well aging, I want to help you quickly and efficiently pick a skin care regime that works, by explaining the science behind skin and by sharing quick product reviews.
I am a big believer that creating a skincare routine that targets your specific concerns is not a matter of your budget. There are many great affordable brands out there: The Inkey List, Good Molecules, Geek & Gorgeous or pixi skincare to name a few of my favorites, and if you know how to combine them, you are well on your way to healthy and happy skin.
Healthy and happy skin does not mean "flawless" - whatever that might be. I have been struggling with acne, hyperpigmentation and postinflammatory erythema (PIH and PIE) for most of my adult life, and it took me a while to figure out that gentle is key. I went through a retinol damaged skin barrier, acne flare ups and sun damage until I finally reached my happy place: With Tretinoin, sunscreen and of course a red lipstick!

Perfectly said! I get it chronically:( tretinoin was my trigger. Now I have to be careful with cosmetics and skincare to avoid a flare. I’ve kept it under control with minimal products, and foundation only on special occasions.

I currently suffer from perioral dermatitis and it just doesn’t go away… I think it started from a cold (blowing my nose and putting Bepanthen on it) and sunscreen… I haven‘t used any skincare product or makeup and no flouride for at least 8 weeks now! It sometimes gets better and then gets worse again… one factor is definitely crying (which I don‘t know how to avoid), but it can‘t be the only factor… a cream from the doctor (Elidel) doesn’t seem to help either… what can I do? Is it normal for the healing to fluctuate? To I just have to wait longer (even though it doesn’t seem to at least slowly get better over time)?

I can't answer that on here, I can only give general tips. I would suggest bringing it up to your treating doctor and maybe see a dermatologist if your treating doctor has no other suggestions.

Im a guy. Ive suffered acne and seborrheic dermatitis for decades. Now i have a mixture of acne and perioral dermatitis. It takes very little to flare it. Forgetting to wash off Benzoyl peroxide can drive it nuts, i only leave it on for 5 minutes. Washing with soap, not good. Any topical, you name it, ive used it, they all flare up Perioral dermatitis. Some overnight, some take many days. There is only one topical that calms POD and thats Elidel but unfortunately this gives me acne. Cant win.

@@DoctorAnne I've been to many dermatologists throughout my life. The usual course of oral antibiotics and topicals. I've learned to live with these conditions. Seb derm is easy to deal with. But the acne with perioral derm is tough. The best I could come up with is 5 minutes of 5% benzoyl peroxide, wash off and then apply Elidel or Protopic. It's not perfect, but it helps.
