Josh, I really like watching your videos. I had a couple of small tips for you. When you place your level on the side of the post that is called, plumb. It means straight up and down. Just like a plumb bob. Also, you can cut off the tops of your posts, but you will need to re-treat them with a wood preservative. Take care and keep up the great work.

how would you put a perfect point on a post? That's the delima..think about driving an uneven pointed post...it will "walk" when driven...to whatever side of the sharpened post that has the biggest surface area...maybe I should do a demonstration
@moneypitvineyard1163

In the vineyard we only use a pointed post when we are on rocky ground or a hole we needed to auger. Very hard to make a straight line with a sharpened or factory pointed post.

Neat project. I have a 16 year old son that is going stir crazy. You feed him, he helps you. Suggestion on your PVC pipe for the spacing (instead of paint and tape measure) - Make is outside edge to outside edge of the post so that you don't have to "guess" where the center of the post is ; just lay the PVC down against the previous edge and put the current post again this end of the PVC. Also, we plumb our posts in the south. Yankees level their posts.

Make sure you put a coating of preservative on the top of any post you cut. Even though they do normally rot on the bottom, I have seen many fence post rot from the top on our family farm. Especially frustrating when a gate is hanging from it. & since your getting fences & gates, always climb over your fences on the hinge side & not on the end. Old rule I learned from my dad.

I don't know if anyone else suggested yet but go to the big box store and purchase a plumb level for fence posts. I bought one years ago but bought two moe when I built my deck roof. It attaches to the post via rubber band or long twist the and leves both the X, Y and Z axis at the same time. Each was about $10.

My grand pa saved plastic coffee containers and that’s what he put on all the wooden post with a roofing main on the side and he had tin cans put over the top of all the smaller post UE needs to do this with all poles because the way wood is with the grain is open on top so water can get in and if you look at these telephone poles rot out the tops first.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Год назад
utility poles rot up top first because those posts are treated with a far more toxic product....these post will rot at the ground first every single time my friend...fence posts 99.9 times out of 100 will rot out within the first 3 inches of ground exposure...don't waste your time my friend
@adamfooks7248
@adamfooks7248 Год назад
Put points on the posts and make the job 100 times easier!! It’s easier to keep the posts bumping true and so so soooo much quicker!!! It’s also a hell of a lot quicker to level the mast, then just eye your post to the mast…..if you’ve got a critical eye you’ll get them just as straight but a lot quicker! Appreciate it may not be your own machine but if it is, permanently mount two small spirit levels on the mast, saves ridiculous amounts of time and the job will still be as it should be 👌🏻

Not that it matters now, but I was told to put the fat part of the post in the ground. After the post is in, the soil will close in around the post and in winter when it freezes, it won't be able to drive the post out of the soil because the fat part is at the bottom. If the skinny part was in the ground, there isn't anything keeping the post from being pushed out by the frozen soil expanding.

If you used the rock driver as your Centre, or centering point. The post would be directly under the drive weight atvthe start. Just my two cents

Put your posts in plumb at corners and end of lines first then run two strings , top and bottom , make it a lot quicker and more accurate ; doesn't matter if bottom shifts out a little as long as you get top close, that's what you'll see. Also run driver square to fence rather than on angle makes things easier, just use swing for hard to get corners.

The ProTech 200S is made in England and costs approx. £5,200 c/w rockspike. That's about $7,200 at a UK port. Andrew at ProTech is happy to field calls and enquiries, he designed it, and can accommodate alterations if desired. I've had two, and they are great products. The 230 is even better, but is more into the contractor spec. From a very satisfied customer.

@20:45 RE: "Conical" post; I believe that is INCORRECT. Especially if dealing with frost-lines. The larger diameter end goes in first; the top part will soon enough be snug in the ground, and the post won't get pushed back up in Winter.

FYI, in case someone didn't say so already. You drive the fatter part of the post into the ground and you never sharpen a post. The reason is when the ground begins to freeze it will push the post out of the ground if the bottom is skinnier than at ground level.

First tip - Rock spike every post hole. The posts will then drop in quickly and dead straight, as they follow the route of the pilot hole. Other tip - I keep two decorators poles in the A frame on the post driver (the rectangle tunnel). I set the length of one pole to the exact distance from the side of the previous post to edge fo the rock spike (i.e. if 7'11" centre to centre. set it to 7'11" minus radius of post (2") and radius of spike (1.5") so 7' 7.5") Then line rock spike up with edge of pole. The second pole is set to the height of the post. Also, try swinging the arm to be more to the right hand side of the tractor. It makes it easier to line up on the next post from the drivers seat.

Appreciate the videos. I may have missed this, but any reason you didn't set the posts with concrete? Our soil here is pretty sandy. Also, I noticed in another video, you recommend NOT painting if you're going to use face plate boards. Is it alright to paint if you don't use face plate boards?

It would be so much easier if you had 2-3 people working on it.

PLUMB --- Your posts should be plumb, not level. Plumb is up and down. Level is side to side. Other than that... Good video. Thanks.

Why isn't mrs stoneyridge helping on this project? You don't need to be strong to move those levers on the post driver! :)

Nice video. Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between saying "The price point on this machine" and "The price of this machine"?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Год назад
prices go up and down....the price point is around $_________ if I tell someone it cost $5,345.25 and next week it costs more ...then I'm in the dog house ....so the price point is the average cost. I don't quote exact prices on anything I use because it bites me in the butt every time...understand better now?

How far apart a post must be from one another? I have an acre property and want to start setting up a fence similar to yours with just a couple of variations.
@richardperry9095

That one post that is higher than the rest...you can put a bird nest box on it after the fence is done to make it look like you meant to leave it high...

It will be cut..the more posts I drove the more rocks I hit...80% of them will be cut at the top at a slight angle

yep, probably not that important on a fence but if you do that laying block or brick or anything critical you will put a bow in your project
