Start from the bottom as a laborer or flagger, learn everything you can, work as hard and as much as you can. Make your bosses the heavy equipment operators jobs easier every way you can you will be operating equipment yourself soon. If you go to heavy equipment school they probably will still start you as a laborer so you can learn how and why things are done the way they are done. I just turned 20 years old recently and I operate a Hitachi Zaxis 870 excavator for a large grading company in the Southeastern United States, it definitely didn't come overnight, but it sure was worth the work!!

The easiest way is to join your local operating engineers union. And it's free minus the union fees once they start sending you out to work.
@thegreathorsdoeuvres
@thegreathorsdoeuvres 4 года назад
How does one do this, because I thought most unions required referrals and experience.

Also, the biggest thing I've found is diversify yourself. It's a risky move but getting into the excavation field is a hit and miss. Don't be afraid of getting laid off, that's just an opportunity to work for another company doing something else. I've had years where I had 6+ w2's for taxes, but in that time I did virtually every aspect of excavation. Pipeline, residential push outs, utility installation, blasting, building and shaping golf courses, rock work, feeding crushers, top hand, running a blade, running a cat, wiggle wagon, dump truck and line haul, sewer, water, gas, power, now I'm on a directional bore machine. I'm 27 years old and I'll never have to "look" for work. If one company doesn't work out, there's a hundred more that will.

I started out as a labor 6 years ago for a builder that does all his own dirt work and a lot of other builders work. As of a year ago I worked my way up to 1 of 3 operators and I love it and the way I did it was every chance I got to get some seat time on a machine I took it. I would even stay late at the yard on my own time just moving around the dirt and rock piles.

I went the mining route. Got a degree in mining engineering and started out doing mill maintenance, then started picking up training on mobile equipment - mostly skid-steers and wheel loaders at this point in time. I've recently begun prospecting old claims with an eye towards operating one, and am in talks with several people about purchasing some older equipment to get started. The bare minimum nowadays is drills, a compressor, generator, fans, a compact loader (I'm leaning towards an old EIMCO or Wagner, underground equipment is built differently and sturdier than construction equipment), an underground truck, magazines for explosives, and a way to process or market your ore. As a stepping stone to running a mine, I'm strongly considering doing drill-and-blast contracting, and/or mining services for claim owners. There are a lot of people who own claims that have fallen into disrepair - there may be money rehabilitating portals and doing ground support work.

Simple answer to the problem, start when young. I started handling tractors at 8years old. Im now 22, survived cancer in my "clutch leg" and still operating equipment from the old ford 9n to the new John Deere and case equipment. Once you can prove you can handle the equipment and not destroy anythig, people trust you with bigget and badder. 9n with a 4ft shredder and 1 bottom plow to the bigger beasts pulling 20ft batwings and 12 bottom plows.... Just takes time and have to love what youre doing.

Stan thanks so much for that first bit. People dont understand these days how to actually care about the company. We run a small landscaping outfit in Stillwater mn and man is it hard to find great employees who show up on time willing to work and go the extra mile and really help the company. Everyone wants a 8-5 and then to get a raise 2 weeks in without putting in any extra effort. Jeez, its a hard business were in...

Was reflecting on my experiences as a young guy getting started in equipment, good share of the time you got thrown into what needed to be running, told what needed to be done, "don't **** up", and off you went. It was survival of the fittest and I wasn't old enough to be as scared as I should have been. One day I got pitched into a JD 790 excavator with only some water line time on a tiny JD350 crawler with a backhoe for experience points. Then it was a dump truck with a pup, 33' tongue, and my only time had been on a small grain truck on the farm. The idea that people go to school to learn to be an operator is still a bit foreign to me. :) Good vid, by the way. Wish I had lived in one of those places where you could turn 100K a year; I've worked about as much on overtime as straight time over the years and never came remotely close to that figure.
@cburford2730
@cburford2730 7 лет назад
Jay Phillips What do you usually pull in a year? And how many hours a week do you work? I'm wondering if I should start this career at 19 and possibly make it my career.
@jayphillips4058
@jayphillips4058 6 лет назад
I'm a Montana guy, 49th in the nation in average wage, so yearly totals are going to be skewed. Around my area, 50K a year is about the limit, with maybe some benefits thrown in. Some guys do a bit better. We are very seasonal because of generally long, cold winters, so when the warm temps hit 60 hour weeks are the norm, and can go much higher. One thing about being an operator/driver, they can't outsource your job, and you have options for private or gov't work. Stick with a more populated area with lower cost of living, and you'll do okay.

My father-in-law ran heavy equipment all over the U.S.. even ran his own dozier service a while, he stopped that when he realized his cat was in the shop more than in the field, it was old when he got it and he put some hard hours on it. His final job before he retired was running scrapers. In his world running the rock truck was a punishment job, reserved for whoever was on the Sh*t List that week.

Stan, do you use the scale to price jobs that Phil uses? I thought I made good on a job recently, I made like 3500 profit in a 3 day period. Using that scale I obviously didn't charge enough though. I typically mark materials up a set percentage, hours rate per man hr I believe its going to take and then other cost involved.

Retaining good operators. Pay the best rate ($30+/hour) and have steady work (40+/week). Pay basic and premium healthcare / dental. Offer pension plan. Provide company truck. Don't expect good operators to do labor. Keep your equipment in good condition, working A/C and heat go along way in keeping the operator happy. These are a few of the things that will keep me with a certain company (15+ years of experience on equipment).

Ahmed Musa I don’t think he runs an actual school. He just does these RU-vid videos about his landscaping/excavation/demolition company.

Starting off in landscaping companies.... even tho you are pushing to move into the heavy world. Please look out for the money hungry companies out their. I have dealt with way to many. These type of companies will promote you more then once. Hey great I am going up the chain. However, they would never increase my pay. The last companie I work for i started off as a lawn care labor. Then then promoted me to equipment operations for the special projects team. Then to a field supervisor and then the final one of project supervisor. You be thinking by now they would give you a pay bump. Nope I started at 13.50/hr. At the end of my contract with them I was a labor, equipment operator, supervisor and project supervisor for 13.50/hr. They made me threaten to quit to get the raise I had earned. Just remember your worth. Your time is important. You are worth the coast of your time. Also stay away from revolving door companies. Good place to start. Bad place to stay.

The problem of getting a mentor or even asking for advice as everybody is so threatened your going to take there work. nobody will tell you anything.

Not bad advice, but I would warn against going to a heavy equipment school. Every boss I've worked for in the quarry and landscape supply industries laugh when they see that on a resume. If you want to get into quarry work, apply at one of your local quarries, most of which are locally owned, for a bottom of the barrel position, either general labor or plant operator. This is where the owners and equipment operators weed out bad workers. They will be assholes to you for awhile, but keep at it. Do well there and they'll get you into some kind of heavy equipment eventually. Even if they just train you without promoting you, that's your way in.
