Come to think of it, I do have a question when it comes to this genre. What would you recommend for potential romance authors who lack the necessary experience with romance in their real lives? No, I’m not asking for a friend. Hehe! In all seriousness though, I’ve only had two girlfriends my entire life, one of them was a long distance relationship, the other was casual dating. I suppose I could do internet research on the topic, but I’m afraid that even if I did that, my story wouldn’t sound authentic enough. I know what I like in romantic stories, but that doesn’t necessarily translate well in my writing.

Do the best you can with what you know and combine with that you enjoy as concepts for romance. Read widely from the romance genre and you'll also have beta readers to let you know if what you're writing is coming across as authentic. You can also find an editor and other specialists that focus on romance so you have that extra expertise in the people helping polish your book ^__^ Hope that helps!

Suggesting that writers use recently published works in their chosen genre is a great suggestion. Genres change a great deal over time so it’s a great idea to see what is popular and what characters and tropes are not only no longer popular, but have become unacceptable.

Kelsey Larsen yup yup. Reading the old stuff has its place but you definitely need to be caught up on the modern expectations

I am struggling to find the answer to my question as I've looked all over the place but no direct answers. Should there be 2 POV's while I'm writing romantic characters or should I leave it to one POV (MC) and they kind of give the reader an idea of who the love interest is, what kind of person they are through their actions and through dialogue? TIA
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 4 года назад
It's honestly entirely up to you. I always prefer a dual POV and that's what I write for my romances, but you can definitely be flexible if you'd prefer a single POV. I thiiiink dual POV is more common. Readers have preferences for both so I would just write whichever one you like best ^__^ I hope that helps!

I suspect that much of romance's bad rep comes from commercially successful books that misrepresent true romance and specific communities (looking at you, 50 Shades). I've recently come to realize that I love romance when it's done well. One of my favorite romance experiences in media has come from playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. Every romance speaks volumes of the characters, and romances also develop peripherally among your companion characters you don't choose to romance. I do have a question, do you think a book could be considered a "romance" if it ends in tragedy, ie. Romeo and Juliet, or would you consider that genre different, like a satire or sociological commentary with romance elements? I'm new to this as a primary genre aspect, though I love romances as aspects of other genre works.
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 4 года назад
If it ends in a tragedy it's not a romance lol. Tragedy is not an HEA/HFN. They can qualify as a tragic love story, but that's not remotely the same thing as romance in the context of the genre. That's not even just my opinion either, the industry standard is the HEA/HFN requirement to qualify as romance. While commercially popular books like 50 Shades certainly didn't help, the issues with people treating romance as lesser has been around since the conception of the genre. I'm glad you've found some form of media romance you enjoy though.

I love romance and i have been wanting to write it for a while now but i get lost a little bit when i write and sometimes it doesn't quite translate the same way on paper as it does in my head, something about the characters and the story just doesn't come off as authentic to me. Am i overthinking it or am i missing something? I am inexperienced with relationships so that might not be helping. I love your videos and i am anxious to read heart and seoul. Love you Erin❤ keep up with the great work.

Gotta disagree with the idea that a lot of criticism of the Romance genre is rooted in sexism against women. The way I see it, people don't like the romance genre because: 1.) How poorly a LOT of other media handles it. So many movies and books have half-baked or forced romance that just feels... plastic. 2.) There is a lot of media that glorifies or involves toxic romance tropes. If this wasn't a thing, channels like Pop Culture Detective wouldn't have gotten off the ground picking apart these tropes. 3.) It's just not some folks' thing and the idea of reading a story that revolves around love makes them uncomfortable
@mikaoh4617
@mikaoh4617 4 года назад
There's plenty of sexism against women due to it, but I agree there are other factors. Every romance novel I've tried to read is ... not in the *style* I like to read. (Think Liani Taylor and Jay Kristoff; more the former.) It's a very simplistic style, so I don't really get into it. Not that there's anything wrong with it, just isn't *my* cup of tea. And there's definitely the media thing too.

What I find interesting is that most men, sorry, but true, are not into the romance genre which is fine, no judging here. I, personally, like gritty or dark romance. What I find interesting is that many action or thriller type books often has the death of a loved one (wife, girlfriend, etc.) as the catalyst for digging in, seeking revenge, outing the bad guys, taking them down. There are usually flashbacks to what they've lost, a scent, a kiss, even a love scene, so I do have to say that sometimes revenge is the greatest act of love. Wouldn't that make one heck of a Hallmark card?
@ErinKinsella
@ErinKinsella 4 года назад
Brenda Nichols the women in those stories are part of the harmful cliche called the woman in the refrigerator. Basically the stories are crafted where the women only exist and die to give men motivation.

@@ErinKinsella That's true, and I've heard of that term before, I'd just forgotten. Valid point, however.

Brenda Nichols yeah one of the reasons I like romance is because the women aren’t fridged lol. A lot of times in other genres if you see a woman getting frisky on screen or page that’s your indicator that she’s gonna die and I like my women alive lol
