One thing that helped me take my lifting to the next level, was quitting drinking alcohol altogether.

This was one of your better videos. They were very simple concepts, but definitely needed to be discussed. I had several great take aways.

Great tips Brandon, I coach several folks and one of the larger mistakes of 2021 was programming for myself. Since then I have been getting my programming/coaching from an outside source

All good points! A lot of it can be tricky and some of it is managed better with maturity (like expectations), so great info to share. The programming is definitely the one that really improved strength for me several years ago, despite having success with weight loss and good definition.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 года назад
For me it was def expectations. I got so worried about the end result of training that I was forgetting to actually enjoy it as much as I do!

Great video and wise words Brandon. The expectations advice resonated with me. Seeing the freaks of nature on social media can be very discouraging if you don’t keep lifting in perspective. There are always going to be people that are stronger than you and people that are weaker than you. In the end, it’s about being the best you.

great vid - agree with everything said. a couple of thoughts: one of the main common shortfalls I've seen, with lifters who program themselves, is that they tend to not realize how much volume is required for an advanced lifter to make progress. to go along with your "expectations" section, what has really helped me is to have a sports specific goal. For me, it is powerlifting meets. I find having an actual meet date in the future is really motivating and that motivation spills into lifestyle and sticking to a program. thnx
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 года назад
Great point, signing up for a meet is a great way to motivate through a training cycle and put a nice bow on it.

Lifestyle and expectations I find to be the biggest factors in progress, if you put in solid effort IMO you can make gains no matter the program. But if you don't have your mind right and your body recovering, no progress. Thanks for sharing the wisdom from your 25+ years of injury free lifting!
@BasementBrandon

Great insight. Would be curious to hear your thoughts on injury prevention as we get older and take on more wear/tear with heavy lifting. (Although, Jon Sullivan, MD from The Barbell Prescription would argue that heavy compounds are even MORE essential as we age)
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 года назад
I think for me, who has remained largely injury free, I've attributed it to smarter programming (RPE based especially) but also cleaning up some potential form issues that were leading to issues.
@benschraeder6069
@benschraeder6069 2 года назад
Agree with the injury piece. Biggest struggle I have. Every time I start getting stronger, pull a muscle. Very frustrating.

Great stuff. I feel my issue ahas always been diet. I’ve never been the one to chase a six pack, but finding a median is always difficult. I love the size and strength gain I get weighing 290lbs but not the look. On the flip side at 230 okay with how I look but don’t feel big if that make sense. Would love to hear your take on nutrition, what yours looks like, cardio, etc. Either way appreciate the insight.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 года назад
I struggle with this. If I eat really well and try to be lean, I just think I look sick and skinny. If I try to bulk up and add some weight, I feel fat. May be worth a video.

I like what you said about looks. It doesn't matter as much as how you feel about your body. I'm actually the opposite, I look like I can lift a lot, but I've seen guys half my size that outlift me by at least 30 kg on squat. Some have said I should be stronger for my size 😆 But it's cool. I'm comfortable with my general performance.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 2 года назад
Exactly!
@FrvrCwbyF
@FrvrCwbyF 2 года назад
Honestly, I've actually taken parts of what others have been doing with their programs and creating my own style suited for me. In the 8 months I've been working out my bench has gone from 135lbs to 280lbs. I workout 5 times a week after work. My deadlift is 350ish and my weakest workout which is squat is around 250 ( since my priority is bench) all while weighing only 150lbs. I believe you can make your own program if you stick with it. But nonetheless, do whatever you want to reach your goals.

In anything I’ve ever done, if I was the smartest or strongest or most adept, I would have no increase in my talent. It’s only when I’m with people who are smarter, stronger, more skilled etc. that I get better. The only exception is when putting together a training venue for others- it’s not until you can teach something to someone else that you really start to become proficient.
@BasementBrandon

When you are advanced it's reasonable to expect only 5 pounds increase a year on the training max for bench but 25 pounds in 5 years is even a big stride especially if you start at a 325 bench then get to a 350 bench 5 years later.
@BasementBrandon

True that.

Magic Spoon is going ham with the advertisements lately. Or maybe creators are more willing to do partnerships if traditional CPM revenue is taking a hit? (not a criticism of anyone, just curious)

I think most companies usually roll out campaigns at the same time. Meaning MS likely had a large budget for this recent push so reached out to a lot of us. I try to space these out and I don't think I've done an integration like this in around 6 months.

I am amused by people who think you look like DYEL. Most people are short especially in fitness world and they don't understand being tall. Or they are begginers and they think they will look like monsters until next year. You are huge for a natural. And I am impressed how you can maintain such low body fat all the time. Do you consider gaining like 40lbs for that sweat strength gains?
@BasementBrandon

Thanks man. The most I've weighed is around 245 or so (220 in this video) and have just felt puffy. I'm at the age now where I worry that gaining that much weight will be detrimental to my overall health, but never say never!
