How to get Swedish driving license for non-EU citizens (Step by step)

Hi!
I'm sharing how I got my Swedish driving license (B - personal car) and I hope you find it useful. As a non-EU citizen, it is allowed to drive with the driving license from your home country for the first year you reside in Sweden. Afterwards it's compulsory to have a Swedish driving license to drive in Sweden.

wait wait. so every time you failed you went to a different city to try to retake a test?

Yes, for me that was the case. There was simply no free slots for me to retake the test in the same city, and if you only pass the theory, you have to pass the practical exam within 2 months, otherwise you have to retake both. The same thing with passing only practical and failing theory. In my case I had to do it in different places. Though in the end I decided to take a few months pause before retaking both exams.

I passed the theory test today! However I tried looking for the driving test, there is not any available time in the whole Stockholm area 😭

Congratulations! Yes, it could be quite tricky and the only way sometimes is to do the test somewhere else. If you do, my recommendation is Västerås.

Thanks for sharing your story. Very helpful! Did you give the driving test in english? If not, did you come across the option of having the driving test in English (where the instructor communicates in English)?

Hi Omair! I'm glad that you found this video helpful :) You can choose to have the theory test in English when you register and for the driving exam, you can try to speak English with the instructor. If your instructor can speak English (most Swedes can, so hopefully your instructor can) they will speak English with you. On some of the tests that I failed I spoke Swedish to the instructor but I happened to speak English during the test that I passed :) Good luck on getting your driving license!

Hi Ivan, thank you! RU-vid provides an automatic captions in English (though it's not perfect) that you can use by clicking on the CC button. If you were wondering about subtitles in other languages, I'm afraid I'm unable to fulfil your wish.

Hello, manual and automatic which one is best to learn

Xera mlde I think it’s best to learn manual since it’s gonna come in handy in any situation and also, with manual license you can drive automatic but not the other way around. However, if you are absolutely certain that you’re never gonna drive manual, then go for automatic.

Do these steps apply to Motorcycle License as well?

Sorry but I’m not sure about that since I only took the personal car license. My guess is that the majority of the steps would be similar. Best to check with Transportstyrelsen.

Holy shit driving exams are much easier in my country and cheaper if I convert swedish kroner

Sweden is one of the most difficult countries to get a driving license in. If you’re an EU citizen you can convert your national driving license into a Swedish one but otherwise you need to take the exam. And yes, the exam is super expensive here.

Hi Michael, I did my risk 2 in Swedish. It was mostly practical so one does not need to be super fluent in Swedish to do it. Otherwise, I was told that there's an option to have risk 2 in English. Please check with your driving school or the risk 2 provider if they can do it in English. Best of luck!
