TheoryWhiz | The 6 Steps to a Swedish Driving License 

Pradeep Agrawal Hey pradeep! It really varies across cities - some locations in Sweden can be more expensive than others. I'm taking my lessons and driving test in a smaller suburb about 45 minutes east of Gothenburg, and the package I bought cost 10.000:- (which was on sale - normally it's 12.700:-) That package included 5 theory lectures, ten 55-minute driving lessons, the cost of my theory test, driving test, both the risk courses, all my books, access to a database of 2,000 practice test questions, and a 45-minute warm up directly before my driving test. I think my driving school charges 680:- per driving lesson, in case that helps at all!

Thank you so much for your detailed description on charges. I am living in Stockholm and planning to take everything here only. Now I am assuming it will cost me around 12000 to 15000 SEK. Since i am driving for the past 10 years, I am still confused for taking the entire package as it costs a lot. What according to you is mandatory in the entire process? Thanks in advance for your help.

The only bits that are mandatory are: 1) Taking your Risk 1 class, 2) Taking your Risk 2 class, and (I am 95% sure on this one) 3) You need to have a Swedish driving permit. That last point I'm still not quite 100% on, but my research indicates that you need to get a Swedish permit before you're able to register for the risk classes and driving tests. And then of course, the fees for the written and practical exams (plus the fee of "renting" their car to do the practical driving test) are also mandatory. But mind you, I drove for 18 years in Los Angeles before moving to Sweden and even I felt I needed all 10 driving lessons in order to get used to eco driving (one of the 5 main areas of driving you are tested on) as well as practicing their legally-approved ways of making left turns from country roads, and also understanding how högerregeln works. My best advice is to at least take 2-3 driving lessons and then get a handledare (as I describe in the video), assuming they are a good driver(!), and have them help you work through things like högerregeln. Knowing how to drive is about 5% of the battle in actually passing the Swedish driving test. There is only a small margin for error so you really need to learn how THEY want you to drive. It's a pain, but spending the $$$ now will likely save you a ton of time and hassle in the long run (in my opinion!)

Thank you so much again for your detailed information. I completely understand now that there is no point here in saving few bucks. Instead do everything until and unless you are ready for the main test. And yes about your last point there is a criteria to have a Swedish permit before starting the process. And yes actually knowing how to drive is only about 5% of the battle in the entire process here.

Pradeep Agrawal and as of Wednesday afternoon I can say I officially have a driver's license here! And I can definitely say that if it weren't for at least 6 of the 10 lessons I took, I don't think I would have passed. The other 4 were probably overkill, but 6 of them definitely taught me the tricks or certain ways I needed to do things in order to pass the test. I hope that helps at all!
