From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shares tips and tricks about welding magnets that may surprise you ....
Because Caron works alone a lot, he has a pretty good collection of magnets. He shows one of his basic red welding magnets from Harbor Freight. He shows the magnet's 90 degree angle and its 45 degree angle for an inside "clamp." It also has a notch that allows you to hold your work from the outside of a piece of metal. The hole in the middle makes it easy to grab and position. They're pretty basic, and come in a couple of different sizes.
In response to a question, Caron then explains that the end of the welding magnet is cut off to accommodate a weld or anything else that might be in a joint when using the magnet to hold steel at a 90 degree angle.
Caron says he often gets asked how to clean the steel dust off of the welding magnets - after a while, they can get pretty "fuzzy." He uses two different methods to clean his magnets. The first is simply to use a whisk broom over a garbage can, and then pull off anything left. Or he'll put on a dust mask, safety glasses and hearing protection, and look the other way while he uses the air hose to blow it off - that's the quickest way to clean loose steel magnets.
There are also welding magnets with on / off switches. Caron shows one with a big red switch. He places it on his metal welding table and switches it on. He pulls at the magnet, but it is clearly attached to the welding table. Also, when you turn the switch to off, it's also a lot easier to brush that steel fuzz off of the magnet. It also helps that this type of magnet is sealed - the more traditional red magnets just have two pieces of metal sandwiching the magnetic section. The sealed ones probably last a little longer, too.
Caron then talks about rare earth magnets. He found his at K & J Magnetics, which has magnets in a lot of different sizes and shapes. [NOTE: NOT A PAID ENDORSEMENT.] He explains how he uses these magnets inside a pipe on a sculpture so he can get it positioned as it would be if it were welded in place. He can put together as much of the sculpture with magnets as possible. He uses a marker to draw around each section, numbers each, then pulls the sculpture apart and removes all the magnets. Now that he knows where the piece goes, he can tack weld them in place.
You can't leave the magnets in place while welding, though, because the magnetic fields in the rare earth magnets and even the welding magnets are so strong that a welding arc will bend toward them. So you have to remove any magnets before doing any serious welding, whether it's MIG welding or TIG welding.
Another magnet Caron says he's sorry to say he uses a lot, especially when he's working on a vessel of some sort, is a telescoping magnetic pickup that helps you reach any tools you drop inside.
Next Caron offers a couple of warnings. If you keep your wallet in your front pocket, don't swipe strong magnets across your pant leg to clean it; it'll demagnetize your credit cards. Keep it away from your phone, too, as magnets can negatively affect performance.
Caron says magnets are a great help in the studio keeping things straight and square and flat, and can even help you pick up things. That reminds him that you can get large, very strong magnets with on / off switches for lifting heavy items such as steel plates when using an engine crane, overhead hoist, etc. They can lift hundreds of pounds of metal.
Well, it's time to go back to work. Or you can visit www.kevincaron.com for more how-to videos and a chance to see and hear Caron's sculptures.
(Unless you want to keep playing, like someone does at the end of the video .... )

Floor cleaning magnets (like a broom but with wheels on each end) are so useful and effective. My son who is a farrier uses a a large flat magnet with a thin metal sheet on the face of it to pick up old horseshoe nails and fragments when he has finished his work. He then slides the sheet off the magnet while holding it over a bucket - works great: no punctures or foot damage to people, animals or equipment vehicles etc.

It's funny I've never run in to another person that uses magnets as much as I do to hold things together let alone a person with 2 good hands. :-) I have only got 1 good arm & hand with my right hand & arm having very limited movement & grip so I started using rare earth magnets everywhere holding my bolts, wrenches an such when working on small engines by myself . I've for them all over the shop holding things & keep variety of different sizes stuck to my wheelchair so I have them with me any time I need 1. I would advise everyone to have a few around & you would b surprised how often they would come in handy even if u have 2 good arms. Thanks for another great video.

I always put my phone in a plastic bag away from my work. Keeps those little steel flakes from getting into the speaker and ringer. Had a friend get his phone insurance canceled cause of repeated issues over that. Figured I'd share the tip, also works great in wet conditions.

+mohamed farouk Different sizes for different jobs. Bigger magnets with more hold for larger pieces. Smaller magnets for tight areas or where you will be welding right next to the magnet. Oh heck, get the set!!

i have checked some more info and i think it is because i am using a lincoln ac welder but they are dc rods and also another question if you want to know wether your polarity is positive or negative is it from the electrode holder or the ground clamp that you tell from. also i am using a lincoln electric 225 with a 30 amp breaker thanks
@davidabraham3873
@davidabraham3873 10 лет назад
***** alright thanks for the info could there be any possibility because i keep the rods out in the barn closer to the doors that they could have gotten a little weathered at all and also after a few rods it gets hot and past half it starts to keep the arc and then after a few more rods closer to the end of the rod the flux starts to just blow of and the welder getts louder and sounds more stressed also a week after buying this welder used the fan stopped turning on do you recommend i replace it right away or am i doing small enough welding for now that i don't need to also the maximum that i will go up to with my breaker is to the 105 amp mark set on the welder also if i do replace this if i put more or a bigger fan will it increase duty cycle thanks
@davidabraham3873
@davidabraham3873 10 лет назад
***** alright thanks kevin i thought that wouldn't affect it that much since i am not putting the volts that high
@davidabraham3873

***** alright i took the stick weld and opened it up the fan was rusted so i put some wd40 on it turned it on and it worked better than ever but i think you are right about getting a new machine i will also ask some people that i know if they have any machines or any thing if not i will give you a shout once again thanks for the info kevin you have been a great help

A question I cannot see answered about these magnets is how close can you weld to them. Heat destroys a magnet does it not? I've got some smaller ones than yours for car body welding only 7cms long. Do you know how close I could weld up to them?
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 16 дней назад
I have no problem mig or tig welding about 2 inches away from the magnet. Any closer and they start to smoke.

I find if i put a square magnet on two pieces of 10 mill bar behind the bars to keep them together it affects the welding process and doesnt weld well ?
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 2 года назад
You are correct! The magnets will screw up the arc when you get too close.

Eh, it’s frustrating. I’ve got a lot of magnets, and a lot of stainless that I work on. The best I can do there, is to put the magnets around the pieces, and have the pressure from them to hold the piece. It great, but it works (most of the time).
