I'll say it again: You haven't fully lived until you've vandalized your own half-finished painting because you knew it needed a drastic change! This video shows how I turned took bold action by adding black paint to abandoned artwork and headed in a completely different direction with all 9 paintings. I hope it will encourage you to take more risks in your art making to get even better.
What do you think about these transformations? Let me know in the comments!

Fascinating. The moves with black seemed so big and scarey, the marks reshaping so small in comparison. The photos at the end showed how varied the coverage of the black was, and the scratches etc reveal more than I expected. I did screen snips from the early part of the video, to compare before and after. Not so much things "lost", more clarified, focused, intensified. Exciting.

And you’re so right - not much was lost, the areas that remained were refined and elevated! ☺️

BOOM! And that is how you embrace the mess and move forward. I love your bold, brave take on fixing a stalled painting. The last set are my favorite transformations. I look forward to seeing how you continue.

Wow! The most frightening colour to go in with, but the close ups at the end are a revelation. Black changes the dynamic completely, I love the way it focuses the eye making the warm colours pop. 😍

Thanks so much, Jan! It really did completely change the feel of the paintings, didn’t it? ❤️❤️❤️

Wow Jackie! Being bold with black is clearly demonstrated here and what a transformation. I like those silicone mark-making tools for precise and clean cuts and the ease of clean up after. Thank you always for blazing these bodacious trails.🙏🏽🥰💖✨💐

it's scary to use black in a painting but once you get over it you can't stop. It gives such a nice contrast with the bright colors. I love the way you pull it off. Thanks for sharing 😊❤

Some cool looking stuff. Im a painter and with all the famous painters today they all have something that is unique to them. Almost a gimmick. Its so hard today to get to this stage. And particulary in the abstract field. But I thought some of yours showed originality.

Thanks so much, Mary! I tend to look for the simple options to dig myself out of creative slumps. It helps that my art is often very busy looking, so I find that quieting areas down with a solid color really helps tie things together ❤️❤️❤️

I always enjoy your work; thanks as always for sharing. I loved the last three just as they were, I wish I could have snatched them back haha. I love this tip for adding black to keep going. But I was wondering if you’ve ever tried bone black vs carbon black for this - I’d have loved to see, especially those last three, with the more transparent bone black, just to see what if anything changed in your/our perceptions after adding. I also love your tip about those paint shaper thingies, as I have these and hardly ever use them but this is a fantastic way to get them into use. Thanks again, Jackie!

Hi Laura! Haha - sorry I covered over your favorites 😆 I do use bone black sometimes, but decided to go extreme for these and use carbon black. This time around I was looking for some major changes 🙌🏻

your paper never seems to wrinkle! i've gessoed paper & used 80 lb. paper. any suggestions? cynthia
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
I’d suggest trying some mixed media paper. The paper I used in this video was probably closer to 200 lb mixed media or watercolor paper. When I use my black sketchbooks, they are filled with Canson mixed media paper which is 138 lb. They can buckle a bit but the sketchbook pages flatten out nicely when they’re all compressed together. Hope that helps! ☺️ Oh, and for whatever reason, I never gesso my papers. The only exception is when I paint over my morning pages in a journal with thin pages. Even there, having the book pages compressed together when I’m not using it helps flatten the pages out. Perhaps the secret is just to work in a sketchbook? ❤️

@@jackieschomburgart thanks, jackie! i'll try a heavier paper. cynthia
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
I hope that does the trick! For the art that you have on thinner paper, try spreading a layer of gloss medium on the front and back sides of the paper (I spread the medium with an old credit card or a color shaper). That should help flatten it out. If it’s not flat enough after adding the medium, placing it between some heavy books overnight should do the trick! ❤️

So inspiring, thank you! Not just the courageous use of black (white works too, no?), but also the concept of seriality. I really have a hard time disciplining myself into creating series, but your video was a great reminder of how important that is. Greetings from Germany!
