Getting a consistent volume level for your podcast, videos and productions is important. One speaker can be too quiet causing the listener to turn up the volume followed by a loud voice from another speaker that shocks your listener. This is not the best listening experience. Learn how to get volume levels the same using loudness and compression audio tools.

I’d recommend matching the loudness rather than normalising. Match loudness uses a clever algorithm to analyse the perceived loudness of the audio rather than the statistics of normalising. This gives the compressor a better chance at getting the levels the same without using a harsh compression setting.

Pretty serious newbie here working on a podcast for my nonprofit organization. Thank you so much for translating these tools into language I can understand. Very helpful! On this one, though, I am getting a weird result. I have a track of me that is louder than the track with my co-host. Your explanation here seems like it would be a pretty straightforward way to fix this. When I do these steps, though, with the target loudness set to -16 LUFS , it just makes my track even louder by 7.7 dB. I am wondering if you have any hints for what might be going on here.

Open the two tracks in waveform first, normalise them to -0.1db and then back in multitrack run them through match loudness.

Curious about the "order of operations" when it comes to applying multiple effects in a multi track podcast with 2-3 speakers/tracks. Dereverb; Dynamics -Autogate (for breaths/background noise); Loudness matching and/or Dynamics - Compressing (as you show in this video); Parametric EQ; Normalizing; etc. What order should you do them in? Do some cancel out the need for others? Since both are in the "Dynamics" window, would you set your auto gate and your compression at the same time, or do it as two different effects in the effects rack?

Super helpful as always Mike! I'm actually stuck with a recording which is pretty bad. Unfortunately our guest's mic didn't work and the mic used was the computer one which really damaged the quality of the audio. I therefore have part of the words/audio being loud enough while other parts are too soft. Do you have a video on how to deal with such a case? Maybe you already have a video on this problem? I feel like I've tried everything and watched every tutorial, and still not really managing to tackle the problem.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
I think the best solution would be the one you probably don't want recommended and that's to record again. While the audio may be salvageable it won't be great. You might however want to try using DeScript and the Studio sound feature to see if that can work at all for you

@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 4 года назад
Hi Junix, there are things you can do if the two voices are in the same file. I'd recommend if possible trying to record one voice per channel so you have the host on the left channel and the guest on the right channel and you can then create two mono files from your stereo audio to process exactly as above. However even with the two voices in one file you can use the techniques above and also consider the speech volume leveler ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M2f865HBPMg.html

Have you done a video on the easiest way to mixdown a new file or clip? I ask bc when I mixdown and it sends the new file from multi track to waveform editor, it doesn’t update the file name until you do a save as and wondering if I’m doing a step wrong or how the right way is to grab clips for stems, or new files.
@MikeRussell

If you want to save direct to a file then chose export mixdown rather than mixdown session to a new file. Certainly what you're describing is normal behaviour for Audition when mixing down a multitrack session.

I'd recommend repairing the audio before applying any processing. Bear in mind however that DeNoise and DeReverb, although very good, will degrade the quality of your audio as will any plugins doing those jobs. so try to record in a quiet acoustically treated space that removes the need for those. mike, i have a complicated question, if you need clarification you can ask.. i'll try to break it down to be clearer: 1.) i have a video clip on my premiere pro timeline, source video framerate is 15 while my sequence is 25 (don't ask) 2.) i change the video duration to make it slower, audio needs to go through audition because premiere's audio engine is horrible 3.) when bringing the stretched audio back into premiere, the audio clip length seems to mismatch i tried measuring the audio by different time scales but audition and premiere seem to be standalone in that department and i can't get a unified number to work with.
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
Editing audio in Audition only affects the audio and not the video so any time adjustments made won’t sync back. You’ll have to edit the audio in Premiere Pro. The audio engine should be fine.
@vooshmoozik6185

Always aim to record separate tracks for the host and guest. If you don't have a multitrack mixer then pan the host left and guest right and when you edit you can create two separate mono tracks. Is it possible to do match loudness and do compression to match the inconsistent volume? I mean despite matching loudness there are still inconsistent volume. The host and guest voice would go low and high. The host always has this -6db volume and she gets consious this time because she is interviewing a friend wich volume is at -12 to -18...that low. That is why sometimes i can hear the host intentionally lower her voice (exchanging thoughts with the guest), but got back to -6db when its her time to talk.

You can use either the speech volume leveler or a compressor
@jared17ds
@jared17ds 4 года назад
Would the same effect be achieved by using the normalise function? And normalising all to the same db?
@Voiceovergenie
@Voiceovergenie 4 года назад
Not in this case since one speaker was quite a bit more compressed already.
@iamtoddmiller

I would now normalize the mixed down file to boost it to perhaps -0.1...
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 4 года назад
Not quite as compression levels out the audio a little. Normalize simply increases (or decreases) overall volume levels.

Hi, Mike~Here is your Chinese fan and you can call me Roy. Thanks for your tutorial! What I confused about is the red light in the compressor panel. What does it mean?
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
Hi, the red lights in the compressor panel is the reduction that the compressor is applying to the audio. The more red lights you see means the more reduction the compressor is applying to the audio. The amount of compression you should apply depends on what you are producing. For podcasting or audio books you want to retain dynamic range (difference between loudest and quietest parts) where as for radio imaging you can afford to have a lesser dynamic range.

Hi Mike. What if I used one microphone to record the guest and the host? How do I go about getting their volume levels to the same?
@MikeRussell

To achieve consistent volume levels when recording two people using the same microphone, you can use Adobe Audition's multi-track editing features to adjust individual tracks or apply equalization and compression settings to balance the volumes.

You can use automations to change the levels throughout the track and then introduce some compression etc. this will require a bit of trial and error.

I have a situation where the multitrack is increasing my mix volume and it is clipping. This happens when I have overlapping dialog, say in an argument, that I want to keep in the podcast. Simple example, I have a clip normalized to -0.1 in TRACK 1. I put the exact same clip into TRACK 2 at the same exact place in the timeline. Now I am clipping past 0. If I mute one track, this no longer happens. If they are both et to -0.1 should why would the volume be increasing when played together? How can I solve this?
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 года назад
By doubling up the audio which is already normalised to -0.1db you will clip. If you’re working in 32bit floating point this is not a problem as you can normalise the final mix down back to -0.1db. I’d recommend if you want to work with doubled up audio that you make use of a hard limiter either in a vocal bus or on the master channel.

I matched clip loudness, but it seems like my host track which is already louder than the guest just gets even louder, and is still much louder than the guest to the point that its like clipping. Is there something im doing wrong?
@MikeRussell

It sounds like you may need to adjust the overall track volume levels to balance out the host and guest audio more effectively and prevent any clipping issues.

🚨 ⚠ Hi Mike ! I LOVE your tutorials ! ..... do you take requests ? ..... I want to copy and paste 5 seconds of video that I have on my timeline... but I want to paste it over and over again so that I get about 5 minutes of audio on my timeline..... there is NO video tutorial I can find on RU-vid ! .... and what about if I have 2 tracks in my multitrack project.... I want to take both audio segments ( one on track 1 and the other on track 2 ) I want to copy and paste those about 100 times on my timeline to make it about 5 mins..... anyway, not sure if you can answer, or even make a video on that. P.S. - I've tried doing that, doing a copy and paste works ONCE.... but try that paste again and nothing happens.... it will not paste a second time, so - I'm confused. Thanks for any help Mike !
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely! I'd be happy to help! In Adobe Audition, you can achieve this by using the "Repeat/Loop Selection" feature to copy and paste the 5-second audio segment multiple times. I could make a video tutorial specifically addressing this issue in the future. Thanks!

Ohhh Mike ! Good morning !! Wow, I just tried what you suggested and wow ! - This is insane !! THANK YOU ! ... now I have just one problem.... I had my 2 clips on my timeline and trimmed them down at the end, using the razor tool.... so far so good.... now when I use my mouse to pull right on the clips ( with the repeat/loop selection turned "on" something strange happens, that little end part of the clip that I had cut off with the razor appears ! as I pull my mouse to the right to extend the clip.... and then and only then does it start to "loop" on the timeline .... maybe I'm going about this all wrong. Anyway you have pointed me in the right direction Mike ! BTW, it's an excellent excuse to add more real estate to your channel by adding a video like this because I have looked up and down on RU-vid and I have NOT found even one video showing how to copy and paste clips ! So it is a needed tutorial in my mind.. there must be people who want to do this sort of thing ! Thanks Mike, you are awesome !! @@MikeRussell

Mike, your tips have been extremely helpful for learning how to edit and produce a podcast. I've changed how I mix my show's vocals and have started using your ENCN method(ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sgi_1-mQN4w.html) recently. I use the MATCH LOUDNESS window and run my show at -16 LUFs. After watching this video it seems I would want to do that with my audio first and then use the ENCN method. Is that correct? The main thing I would appreciate you sharing is the correct order (from your experience) for matching loudness, using the ENCN method, etc.

@@MikeRussell I appreciate the response. I've seen that video a handful of times. That was what I initially saw to make me start using the compressor from the Dynamics effect option. All I saw was the Eq and compressor you used in this video. Do you hit the normalized in between those steps and then match loudness at the end? Thanks!
@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 года назад
It’s a matter of personal preference. If you edit in multi track then you have no option to normalise during the process. The most important thing is to match the final podcast file to -16 LUFS before uploading to your host.

This will work on one track with multiple voices although in an ideal world you’d want each voice on a separate track so they can be processed individually and then run through a bus to level up the audio.
