How to give a dog a pill, the easy way.

If you're wondering how to give a dog a pill in this video Becky shows you how to do it the quick easy way. What you use is cream cheese. Take a spoon full of cream cheese and wrap the pill inside it. Then give it to your dog. If your dog never ate cream cheese before you can prime him by giving plain cream cheese to him for a few days before you start giving the pills.

You probably won’t see this but this really changed my life with giving my girl her meds🙂 I got so tired of shoving pills down her throat she would run from me and try to hide it broke my heart.....SO THANKS!!!!

Thank you for this information juliesreborn1. I just had to give my Boston his Trifexis and I've hidden it every possible way and I failed. So, I decided (bright me!) that I would cut it in half, get his baby sister tempt him to take it and NO WAY! So, I have chronic back issues and after several and I mean several attempts, it worked but I can't do this every month. Ace does the same, runs and then closes that mouth shut. I can't wait to try it Ms. Becky's way. You helped me alot!

Y’all this works! My dog was previously taking the pill pockets without any issues but, all of a sudden, he started refusing them. I tried everything: peanut butter, cold cuts, putting the pill in the back of his throat, etc. and he just kept spitting it out. Taking one pill became an all-day struggle. I tried this tonight thinking I have nothing to lose and, to my surprise, it worked like a charm. Thank you for this video!

My dog just had 24 teeth extracted and I was worried about inflicting pain if I used the traditional method of pushing the pill to the back of the throats and holding the muzzle. I tried pill pockets and cheddar cheese. My dog would detect the pill every time. Your trick was perfect! You saved me and my dog a lot of unnecessary pain. Thanks so much! The next 10 days should go much better!

Thanks so much, Becky! I was worried after the first time I tried to get my Rescue, Tyson to take his antibiotic. It became a battle, and I was worried about damaging the trusting bond we were developing. As you suggested I gave him a few small bits of cream cheese to see if he liked it. YES! Then he gulped down his two pills wrapped in cream cheese one after the other. What a blessing!

I would be too chicken to ever put my hand in a pit bull's mouth. I remember a truck driver who told me that their jaws develop something like 10 tons of pressure. No sir! Not me! That would be like putting my head in a lion's mouth.

I just came across your video yesterday, and I really need to thank you! Our dog needs to take meds twice a day, and every day it was a wrestling match … trying to open his mouth and shove it in because he detects pills in EVERY food. 4 years later I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH, this actually works!!! My gsd boy is so picky but with the cheese (he never had it before)...sooo different, I gave him a first ball with nothing inside of it, no pills...he was a little suspicious at first but then ate it and the rest of the balls with the pills, he literally just swallowed them, i'm so happy!! Unfortunately most of these techniques other than just forcing it into the dogs mouth don't work if your dog is so sick it won't eat.

If your dog is so sick it won't eat, then your vet will most likely just give you a suppository version to stick up their butt or you can crush it and put it in water

Marvin Whisman yes that is happening with our dog. Won’t eat canned food or the pill pocket, or even white rice we just force it and he’s used to it.

Hi Marvin, my dog is so sick that she won't eat even chicken breast. She won't take pill pocket, peanut butter, mozarella cheese, can food...nothing. I will give it a try to the cream cheese tomorrow. Right now I have to crushed the pill, put 4 drops of water and force it down using syringe.

Trick used in the vet industry: put pill as far back into the throat as possible, then close the dogs mouth & while holding the muzzle, blow in the nose -- quick puff of air This forces a swallowing reaction & the pill is gone.

That's how I got teeth marks on my hands once. That was once and never again. I tried spreadable liver sausage. This does sound much easier though.

+TheAnnArnold Yep! I totally understand. Me, too. I worked in a boarding & daycare facility & I had to pill dogs all the time that were NOT cooperative. And they weren't my dogs either which made it even harder. If you can't get them to sit still, back them into a corner. Put your own back in the corner & stand over the dog w a leg on each side. Close your legs together like a LOOSE yoke over the neck. The dog can't back up, can't jump up & can't move forward. You can then bend over to grab the muzzle to pill & blow in the nose. NOTHING at all wrong with pilling in a ball of yummy food! Nothing at all. I'm just posting an option for an owner whose dog has thrown it ALL up or there's no appropriate food around. :-)

You are a genius! I adopted a GSD mix from a shelter. Brought her home after her spay surgery. She wouldn’t eat her food, peanut butter or hot dogs, only a bit of string cheese. She is suppose to eat before one of the medications. I watched your video and ran to the store to pick up cream cheese. OMG, it worked! I wish I had known this years ago. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much! I have an Italian mastiff and she was noootttt having the pills. In any way shape or form. I tried pill pockets, peanut butter, bread, meat, anything. She would move it all around her mouth until the pill popped out and drool EVERYWHERE. This worked like a charm!

What a life saver. For medications that can be crushed, we have been mixing with scrambled eggs or peanut butter. Recently we were required to give our dog a huge pill that could not be crushed. I tried the cream cheese and she gulped it down on the first try. No more feeling guilty for having to shove it down their throat or forcing them to eat the pills. THANK YOU.

OMG !!! You are a lifesaver !!! I have a Cocker spaniel and the pill looks exactly like the one you show. It was horrible trying to give her pills. My husband and I would argue whose turn it was. Awesome technique. I had to start my one Pug who is 11 years old a different joint medication from a little Glycoflex pill to a Verti-Disc powdered capsule. I just primed him in the afternoon by letting lick the cream cheese and eating some then I primed him again. Right before I gave him the entire capsule. He swallowed the whole thing with no problem. Becky you are a life saver! My dog (he is a yorkie mix, so he can sniff anything) needs to take antibiotics and would not take them. Putting it on his mouth was impossible as he will always push it out and I tried using different foods and wouldn't work. I gave him the cream cheese and he immediately loved it, pill gone in!

Worked like a charm. I did the same with peanut butter and she kept finding the darn little pill with her tongue and spitting it out. I didn't have any strait cream cheese, but I had philly brown sugar cinnamon. I started by first getting her to lick some off my finger ...she loved it. Wow Becky! Thank you so much! My mastiff just had surgery and I was going crazy just trying to get her to take at least her antibiotics, never mind the pain pills. We tried to vet trick unsuccessfully (should have known when the vet couldn't even do it) and everything type of meat, spread, and sliced cheese. Ok, I didn’t even finish watching this video. I paused it and went into the kitchen to try it. My black lab has hip problems and has been limping lately. Her vet gave her some pain meds but she is too smart for every method I’ve tried - peanut butter, lunch meat, cheese, etc. she spits the pill out. But I put this one in cream cheese (it was the whipped kind in the tub so it was messy). You were right - she swallowed it without chewing. Then I did it again today and it worked again! Oh my gosh...thank you so much! I will do all her pills this way from now on. I even bought a brick of cream cheese today just for that (the whipped kind is for my bagels).

I have to say I thought there is no way this would ever work on my dog. Even the vet had trouble shoving a pill down his throat. It was a MIRACLE! He had never had cream cheese before so I gave him a little taste. Seemed to like it, then tried the cream cheese with the pill in it...he swallowed it right down! Thank you so much for sharing this. This trick saved me! I was literally crying in frustration, needing to get down a lot of pills for my Husky pup who just got spayed. She needed antibiotic, sedative, and pain pills. Luckily, I had several packages of cream cheese on hand and some plain bagels which she loves. I gave her a bit of bagel with a tiny bit of cheese, then the pill rolled into a ball of cheese, then another bit of bagel. It worked!!!

An amazing tip. Our Husky's last ACL surgery was a nightmare to get him to take his meds. This time it was the other leg and I was dreading the post op because of the past experience. Thanks to your cream cheese tip this has been a breeze. He takes his meds without even spitting out the pill. Yeah, great idea but my dog is sick with no appetite at the moment...other wise she would gobble it down too. She loves any kind of cheese! Lol I have had to resort to the task of trying to get the pill at the back of her throat and trying to keep her from spiting it out. She is clever too. Lol Tonight I got it done on the 2nd try but she wasn't too happy. I'm praying the antibiotics start to kick in so she will start to eat again. The only cream cheese I had was the soft spreadable type but I gave it a try anyway. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! She ate all six pills this afternoon and licked the spoon clean that I gave it to her with. No more having to jam pills down the back of her throat anymore. What a great idea.

Jaime Ramirez Count me in as well. My Border Collie is so smart & I tried everything of no avail but this method works. Just hope my boy won’t figure it out since we have another 40 pills to go (2X a day, 2 pills each time) . . . . fingers crossed. 🙏🙏🙏

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This works for my Dachshund EVERY time, little Philly cream cheese balls !!!! Wow does it take the stress away. Cassie had to have some teeth removed so no way would I try to open her sore mouth. Thanks again Becky, I am one VERY happy dog owner. :0)

I know this video was made over 2 years ago but I have a rescue 10 year old Bichon Frise and he had to be put on medicine for his skin allergy. And I had such a hard time getting him to take his pill. He would eat around the pill with everything I tried. He hates peanut butter. I watched this video and OMG... this worked. Cooper loves cream cheese. And now I can get his medicine in …. no problem.. Thank you for this wonderful tip.

Thank you Becky. My little buddy was giving me all types of troubles with his pills. He just had a major surgery and I have 4 different pills I need to give him. I couldnt get him to take a single one. This tip was exactly what I needed and will make his recovery much smoother. I instantly got 3 of the 4 down and dont anticipate too much trouble with the last one. I really appreciate you sharing this.

I was totally skeptical because my dog has figured out meatballs, hotdogs, crush/mix, and name brand pill pockets. Plus my pooch has to take daily meds, one of which is a horse pill. TOTALLY works--Thank you very much, Becky! You saved me from the dreaded vet method of pushing the pill into the back of the throat (that works if you do it right). Thank you, thank you, thank you!

excellent! my jack russell figured it out in a couple of days like you said. was trying to figure it out and found your site. tried it and it worked. thank you so much. I even had some cream cheese in the fridge. saved my fingers too. she is not a dog you want to force feed. thank you again.
