How to Glaze

I've used glazing a lot on past miniature projects, and I always feel bad because I don't have a video on the subject that really goes over the technique and equips people with all the right expectations. Hopefully I fixed that with this video!

This is one of the most friggin' useful videos on mini painting on RU-vid. Glazing gets thrown around as a term willy-nilly without an explanation so often, and that sucks for newbies. And you did this right after getting teeth yanked?! Pretty sure two days after mine came out I was still a chipmunk faced wreck drooling into a bowl of soup, barely able to control a spoon, let alone a paintbrush. Kudos. I wish you tasty soup and smooth blends.

Miniac or anyone HELP ! I'm thinking of doing Zenithuial Highlighting with my Space (Ultra) Marine (you know undershading with black primer all over then grey primer at 45 degrees and then white primer from top) BUT I want to glaze it (just after priming it) with a MacCragge Blue Citadel paint (using say Vallejo Glazing medium or Citadel Lahmian). Problem is MacCragge Blue Citadel is a BASE paint and someone informed me that I can't do that because 'it's too opaque'. Dunno if that's true, they suggested a Vallejo Blue Ink instead for glazing the undershaded primed Ultramarine but Vallejo Blue Ink isn't MacCragge Blue and I want to stick to their proper GW approved colour.
@Miniac
@Miniac 5 лет назад
You can use virtually any paint you want for glazing. Base paints may just take more water to thin out than a layer paint.

I think that mediums appear white because of how they refract light, not because there is any white pigment in them. These refractive properties seem to cease when mixed into paint, therefore no white tint or something like that occurs
@jellyman-
@jellyman- Год назад
i realise I am 4 years late but just in case for anyone else reading this, i believe that similarly to varnishes, the white colour is completely gone when the medium has dried. once its been mixed with some paint its already barely noticeable

Great video. Thanks for posting it. I also wanted to say, for those fellow beginners out there, that I've learned glazing can also help rescue you if your highlights are accidentally too intense, or too much white in them, etc., mixing up a thin glaze of your base color and then using it on these hyper-intense areas can mute the highlights without completely painting over them with the base and blotting them out.

It's difficult to put down in words... but i'll try. You have a way of describing things and breaking them down so that I can FULLY understand what you're trying to convey. I really appreciate that. When one of your vids pops up it always seems to be related to a thought or question I've had about mini painting that I feel I'm short on knowledge about. Be that youtubes algorithms working overtime or (more likely) just the fact that you know what mini painters need to know... I can say with certainty that I've never clicked on one of your videos and not learnt something. You have made me a better mini painter and model maker. Just as importantly, your knowledge has encouraged me. I've never done it before with any other channel (or anything) but with the amount you have helped me the least I can do is help you through Patreon... it's not payday till the end of the month but you can bank on my support then.

The Citadel Glazes are more of a colour shift than a blending paint. I use bloodletter to create sores or cuts because it slightly tints the skin red. You CAN blend a colour with the glazes, but, as you said a thinned paint is my prefference

Hi Scott...I just received the brushes you use...the nice Raphael brushes and they are awesome. I know you say (and others too) that using the best tools doesn't make you a better painter, but I can say they have made me a better painter! They don't split and they hold a point better than anything I have used before...even the Windsor Newton brushes I have. They perform as you expect and are not frustrating as some other brands are. Thanks for the recommendation and I have to say I am looking forward to PAINTING MORE MINIS with confidence and success.

Great explanation of glazing. First time I've heard a good breakdown of ink vs. paint in glazes. Rinse with saltwater a lot; that helps with irrigation and pain relief. Also, put your icepacks in the toes of dress socks, tie the tops together, drape them over the top of your head, and put on a baseball cap. That was a lot more comfortable that bandaging around my face.

Man, where were you in 1982? We would have killed for any kind of art training applied to minis. They were awful grotesque casts and we all started with Testor's gloss paint, which was used by the model car builders in the late 60s and 70s. It wasn't acrylic so we used turpentine. And brushes that were better suited to, i don't know, being thrown in the garbage. Imagine a haircut given by a sibling that hated you; that's what the brushes were like. I still have all my old stuff from Grenadier and Ral Partha. Oh how I loved Ral Partha paints.

Somewhat unrelated though, but in terms of workspace and brush handling, how do you go about it?
