In preparation to reglaze a beautiful old arch-topped window, I've been looking at various "how-to" videos on RU-vid, and this video is by far the most helpful and informative of the bunch. Thanks for posting this, and in the future, when I am looking for info on another project, I will definitely check out videos from TheCraftsmanBlog first. Thanks again!

I always treat the inside of the sash with some linseed oil before I bed or glaze. If you don't, the wood will suck some of the oil out of the putty and cause a gap to open. To do this I use a small glue brush. And be careful about rags and linseed oil. The wadded rags will spontaneously ignite if wadded up.

Great point Roger! You can either coat with boiled linseed oil or prime the rabbets with an oil-based primer prior to glazing. Both are effective at keeping the wood from pulling the oil from the putty.

Wonderful video. Loved that you showed two ways to apply the putty. Most guys show one way, their way, as if nothing else could possibly ever work. The attention to detail and showing what a pro job looks like was also a really classy touch. Not sure mine will even approximate this one, but feel I can at least tackle the job with a modicum of ability.

Great instructional video, Scott! I'll have to try the Sarco Type M glazing putty. Looks like it's easier to work with than the brands available at Home Depot!

Thanks - this was _really_ useful. I'm about to renovate an old wooden window frame that needs new putty, preserver and woodstain and I intend to remove any glazing points and old putty in the rebates (I think you called them "rabbits") and put the glass back in place with new points and putty. I also have to replace some rotten sections of wood. I can also remove 3 opening windows from the frame to do this on a bench, as you did. I'm very grateful for your clear advice and pratical guidance.

Thanks for the information. It really helps. I'm having a hard time with my metal sash, what would I use to hold the glass while I apply the putty since the glazing points don't go in. and where'd you get that cool putty knife? Might I also suggest a better camera, the thin view is less desirable then a typical 4:3 or 16:9 ratio.

Whiting? I keep cruising glazing videos to try and understand if whiting has any purpose beyond tradition. Do you just start with clean components, then after all the prep and painting is finished you simply grab soap or windex like any other glass? Do early fingerprints and linseed smears stain the glass or can't be cleaned later? The need or function of whiting is kinda lost on me to the point that I might not use it because nobody mentions it as useful, like it's function has been superseded over time with modern methods.

Thanks, great video. I really wish someone would address the ENTIRE process with the window IN PLACE (including stripping glazing & paint). I am currently working on my front window which has an exact-copy storm window on top of it. I was able to remove the storm to work on that in the garage, but the actual house window must stay in place. They are both 5x7 feet with 6 lights each. Each light is 17.5" high x 36" long. About 1/2 the glazing on the outside practically fell out of the window... the rest is requiring some doing; last evening, I made a tiny crack in one of the lights trying to get the glazing out... dammit! I am only 5'2" tall & have had to come up with some creative ways to work on this (unable to rent or borrow scaffolding). I'd love to see some creative tips & video showing how to effectively remove that remaining glazing, glazing vertically/in place (especially the upper rabbets), & the challenges of getting large lights in & out without breaking them!! :)

On double hung windows that are 1X1 over lights (one large pane of glass per sash) would you still recommend going with the 3/8" points, or the 1/2"?

? 1. Some 20 years ago I did some restoration & vaguely remember priming the wood with oil base primer, drying well, back bedding, then putting the glass in and priming the glass.... ? before puttying. I wonder if I remember that correctly. If some of the old timers do it that way... and best of all what is your take on priming the glass - why & why not. ?2. the last few days reading I ran across something saying after waiting for the putty to skim over, to not prime after puttying but to paint with good enamel (didn't say if it was oil / or water base). I thought I remember using oil base primer after the putty skims over. will you clarify that. 3. Thanks for great videos & your blog & store. Love being able to find the best products for the job!!!

N Y You're right on everything except Sarco putty recommends not priming their putty. Just a couple top coats of either oil based or water based paint.
@ny6901
@ny6901 7 лет назад
Thanks for clarifying that. I just used DAP. Let it dry for 7 days and then did a coat of Benjamin Moore exterior ... the good stuff. (without priming). Seems to be developing crack lines. I realized after doing that, you must have been referring to only the putty you recommend. Not up for starting over so I will give it another coat in a few more days and see how that goes. I thought at first that because the putty stays flexible for awhile using latex was a good idea -- so it could move with the putty. (vs Oil which, if I remember correctly drys hard & isn't flexible.) Then I reread the DAP inst. & it says prime with oil base. My Lesson: Mixing instructions Might have harmful effects! Will see. It might just be a good thing. An experiment! I will use your putty on the next windows I need to do! And an afterthought: So does Sarco say why they recommend no primer? (When I know why I follow instructions better - and tend to remember longer) Thanks for your reply
@TheCraftsmanBlog
@TheCraftsmanBlog 7 лет назад
N Y Sarco says that the use of an oil primer can cause the putty skin to re-emulsify and dissolve.

I'm curious where you got the push driver you are using for the diamond points. Did you cut that down from a typical push driver or is there somewhere that you can purchase one of those?

What do you use for priming the entire sash when the wood is dry? I've seen some posts about BLOPentine and clear wood preservative, and I'm not sure the best method or order for using..

Points only go on the outside since the glazing rabbet holds the glass from the inside.

Sarco putty might be the best but too expensive.i would only use for high end work which pays more.buy cheaper putty like dap,warm up and knead in linseed oil...

How do I get this stuff off of my hands easily?
@TheCraftsmanBlog
@TheCraftsmanBlog 5 лет назад
Strangely the easiest thing I have found is by wiping it on carpet remnants, but that’s not always practical. It’s won’t wash off with soap and water since it’s oil based so I usually just wipe it off with paper towels or rags.
@rdingwel
@rdingwel 4 года назад
Regular soap and hand soap do not work that well but Dawn dish soap does a halfway decent job. They use it to clean crude oil off of wildlife after spills

use chalk dust, "the white straight line powder" then use a wire brush. Works great! you can also use drywall compound and then wire brush it off. apply as much powder throughout the wire brushing to keep the putty dry and it comes right off
@nancynyberg1123

I happened to have paint thinner handy so put it on a rag and ragged off the compound. It worked to clean my tool, too.
