I was looking for gold leaf tuturoial and found this. The swirl technique for added shine to the gold is a great idea but what impressed me most was your free hand painting of outlining the numbers. What a talen!
Probably the best tutorial for us rookies on the web. So many artists are selfish with their tricks and tips.....thank you for your time and the lesson.
Get a grip. Selfish?! What, people that have practised for years and years, paid for courses or mentoring, read and paid for books to hone their craft and you're calling them out because they don't want to upload a video step by step guide for you?? People like you who are always looking for shortcuts are the people that make this world a shitter place, jog on you pleb.
@@D-D0G For one ….. you don't know me.....and with your attitude will never have the pleasure. I work in a dangerous profession that was held back for years because the old timers would not share their tricks and tips with the young up and comers that followed them. And yes....they are selfish, just as I am sure that you are, with your dweeb comment. I will not continue this conversation and disgrace what this man has done by taking the time to SHARE with others his knowledge and expertise. I hope that one day you can understand what your comment brings to this page.
I just want to say thank you Mr Bendi for putting up all these tutorials. I have always wanted to try my hand at striping and these videos have helped me tremendously. I just ordered a small kit tonight to get started
I can’t tell you what that means to me. 😍 get a brush, get some paint and start stroking!!! When I was young I’d stripe anything that stood still. I wanted it! Bad! Stay passionate! And you will be great!!!
The best honest video I see so far over 2 weeks about how to gold leaf plus Plus the details!!! Mucha suerte Hermano And God bless the good American people 💯❤️
TY for this. i was kinda scared to attempt gold leaf on a chopper build im about to take on. never worked with it. but now i think i am confident i can do just fine with it :) you are awesome.
Thought you might bring out the mahl stick to support your hand above the gold, nope. Have you ever tried clearing with Future floor polish, its an acrylic ? That garage , if yours deserves a tour. Cheers
2 coats of brush clear is not as durable as automotive urethane clear. ( which should be sprayed on ) if you drive this vehicle every day, in sun and snow and rain. Wash it and wax it . It will hold up for a little while. I usually do gold leaf on antiques and show vehicles. It will hold up fine in this circumstance. Thank you for watching
After seeing your work it made me realize two things. 1) It will take a lot of years and a lot of practice to get on that level 2) I wish I lived closer to where you are, so I could commission you to do some silverleaf on my motorcycle. That work is insanely great. I respect how good wasn't good enough. Adding in those extra layers made it that much better. I do have one question for you, if I may. You hand brushed on the Dux clear - Is that enough to wash, wax and buff afterward? I would be concerned about undoing all that hard work? Thanks in advance, and fantastic job.
Trust me. You can’t do this. Just keep working on it. It will get there. I still screw up sometimes. But im always trying to to be the best I can be. Thank you for watching .😎
You say Dutch Gold, I googled and found “imitation leaf” sometimes called Dutch metal. Is this the same thing essentially? Looks fantastic and great tutorial, to the point.
Such talent and I'm inspired to attempt this. Thanks for sharing and the 77 turned out beautiful. I think it'll take some practice on my part to even get half as good:) I'd like to do this technique on a furniture project I have in mind, re-creating antique advertising lettering. I especially like 1.) how you apply the gold leaf by using the paper on which it comes and 2.) the cotton ball technique.
You make this look so easy brother. Thank spent yesterday trying to gold leaf. Doesn’t look like this!!! Laugh. But getting better. I just wonder if you need to put something over the top coat of size as this car will be in the weather etc.
The best clear is automotive urethane. But that has to be sprayed . So this is one of the best clear you can do. I would give it a double coat. But understand, if it’s in the sun and rain , it will start to fade out eventually . Thanks for watching 😎
Im doing diy leaf on a hand gun. Can I use this process. If so do you have video on chemicals/paint prep? I ask cuz when you said you put the coat you mentioned you didn't thin it. I'd like to know the thinning process
I never did a gun. Im worried about durability. I would check another source for information. The clear I use is DUX quick dry sizing. I never thin it , it’s better used straight. I use it to put the leaf on and the same clear to top coat it. I hope this helps. Thanks
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. All my questions have been answered in one video. My biggest was how to protect it if I didn't plan on clear coating the work.
bowtiepower69 I always clear the leaf. Mainly because I work on vehicles or glass. There is some gilding that you don't have to clear , like church ceilings or statues. . But I'm sorry , I don't know how that's done. Thanks for watching
Looks great, Rick! Helpful video. A nearby Letterhead out in Elgin. My quick dry size is Luco. Do you know if Dux is pretty similar? The only other size I've used is LeFranc slow. I haven't done a lot of gilding. Thanks for posting.
I will never be even close to your talent and final job product, but I want to tray my fist attempt with golden lives on motorbike helmet. Normally I use this golden sheets on desserts , because I'm a chef but I love painting things as a hobby.
Wow, just wow!! Absolutely beautiful work!! You know you are watching a master when they are able to make the job seem easy. I am just experimenting with gold leaf and I learned a lot from your video. I only wish I was able to paint like you. Paint pinstriping and lettering used to be everywhere, now if you are lucky you have to drive to the next state to have someone stripe your car. Thanks for sharing your skills, I have subscribed.
I used "variegated leaf"...as well, one word, many don't know what "Dutch gold leaf " is..no criticism just saying. Also after 50 years in biz I would use 1 Shot white with a bit of boiled linseed oil to avoid buying size in a pinch, and a white backing gives a little Xtra to brilliance. Man.. I'm retired now but spent years pinstriping and lettering race cars and Big Rig diesel trucks. Thanks good work. Paolo
That is so cool and thanks very much for sharing. Question; If am inter-clear that is used paint flames, add decals and other, then finish the area with a urethane clear coat over the area? Since it contains "UV" inhibitors and provides a harder finish, would this work or have you done this. Some painters do this to finish when done.
I have never done that process. But , the lettering enamel I use can just about be cleared with any top coat. Even water base. Always try a sample if your unsure of the product. Thank you for watching 😎
😎northwest side. Harlem and Addison area. 16 district. I’m in the suburbs now, but I still go back for jeans and Jude’s & johnnys beef 🤪😁thanks for watching!
Will leafing over paint with a clear coat affect the longevity of the leaf? Is it safe to rough up the surface before applying? Will using the dux glue work as a finish or should/can you use clear coat? Thanks for the video! I'm thinking about doing custom work to my motorcycle!
I’ve only done leaf over clear coat. When you do your bike , you can paint the tank base coat clear coat urethane. Then wet sand it with600 grit , do your leaf and art work. Then re clear the tank with urethane clear coat and it will last longer.
Hi rick I started to search the almost 400 comments to find out the color of blue on the car?. I appreciate the tutorial -I am planning a silver leaf on my number panel on blue also. Again what color blue please. Regards
I’m sorry, but I did not paint the blue on the car. But off the top of my head i would say it’s ether marina blue ( a GM color from the 60’s )or Iroc Camaro blue from the late 80’s. Look at those colors, I think ether one is a great color. And a good background. Silver leaf with a black shadow and red or light blue outline would be killer. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😎
People do gold leafing on building’s ,but I do automotive . The process and sizing might be different.I use urethane clear if I want it to last. But there’s got to be a better way to do architectural work. try looking up gilding in architecture, they should help. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help. Thanks for watching
Afternoon, i have to do a custom paint job on a harley, using gold leaf. Problem is, I've never done that. What brand gold leaf do you recommend for bikes?
It will hold up fine, that vehicle will not see a lot of weather or abuse. I would not use that clear on an everyday vehicle , I would use an automotive urethane. But the enamel paint will be great. I use that to letter trucks and pinstripes thanks for watching 😎
I usually put 2 coats of clear on. Wait 24 hours in between coats. It can be waxed … but I would avoid pressure washing . I tell my clients not to pressure wash. Thank you😎
Obviously with proper precaution but will this gold leaf stay on metal or is it better to do a custom engraving and then put it on whatever you're trying to Gold Leaf newbie to this and would love to learn how to properly and how to make it with stand time any advice from anyone?
It will work on metal. But for durability you should spray automotive urethane clear over it. Brush clear does not have as much durability in the weather. Thanks for watching 😎
M yes you Can use imitation leaf. The leaf I used is Dutch gold . It’s more like a foil. It works the same as 23 carat , but cheaper. The brush you use should be a lettering quil. I use a “ luco “ or a “ langnickel “ or “ French master “. All great brushes. The sizing for the leaf is “ dux “ quick dry . Hope this helps. Have fun !
🤔I’m not quite sure. I’ve never done anything like that. Is it wood? Is it Formica? Granite? It will not hold up ,with the process I did on that car. I’m not sure if automotive clear would even hold up. I would do a test area ,no matter what you decide to do .Sorry, do some research and see what happens. Let me know 😁thanks for watching
Awesome job! Thank you for making it look much easier than it probably will be (for me). Btw, I had to watch the video twice, once for all the stuff in the garage, and the second time to actually watch your masterful work. Could you please share the links to the products you used?
So awesome man!!! Thank you so much for sharing your top shelf skill! I’d love to do this process on a race car That’s about to be retired. So beautiful and precious… Precious!😂😂😂
The glue ,or “sizing” is like a varnish. I use DUX quick dry sizing . The paint i use Ronan lettering enamel . Then I put a coat of the same Dux sizing over the top of the gold leaf for protection. Thank you for watching 😁👍
Thank you for watching. The name of the gold sizing I use is DUX. Quick dry. I use this to clear the leaf also, dont thin it out. The color of the blue outline is process blue lettering enamel by Ronan.
If I'm doing a larger surface area, can i spray clear as adhesion instead of brushing? I'm planning to use urethane paint as well since I'm doing it on a sidecar😅
I’ve never sprayed the sizing. You would have to thin it out, im not sure that would be good. I always use it straight. Use a 1” fitch to brush the glue, you can cover a lot of space with that. If you do spray it, do a sample first. Good luck. Thanks for watching 😎
@@rickbendi8709 thank you for responding! I'm still new in custom painting and I mainly use urethane as it's what I've proven to be the best. My work focuses on motorcycles. It's a bit hard finding detailed tutorials like yours so it's really a great help!
Painted some flames on car hood once. Artist friend of mine convinced me to use gold leaf on the flame tips. He showed me how. He didn't use adhesive. He put alcohol on the hood and put a piece of leaf on top. The alcohol dried up and sucked the leaf flat onto the paint. Trim with a razor blade and clear over it. It has been there for 22 years and still looks great. It was a small area about 3/8" x 1". Don't know how well that would work on a large area like those numbers.
Rick Bendi Thanks I’m getting ready to do a couple projects with gold leaf and would like to spray transtar clear over the entire panel once I’m done lettering it! Good to know thanks again
I’ve had a couple of jobs tarnish also. But only in the weather over time. I’ve had some show vehicles I’ve done that don’t see a lot of sun or weather still look good . (20 years ago. ) automotive clear with U V protection will probably help that scenario. Thank you for watching
To stick the gold on the tank, I use a product called “ DUX “ QUICK DRY SIZING. Then after the gold is on , I brush a coat of clear over the gold with the same product. I never thin this product. I use it strait out of the can. I hope this helps you. Thanks for watching 👍😎
That is a sweet old looking 1/4 midget for sure.if anybody really knows what kind of car that is.im from about 60 miles from the sprint car capitol of the world.nice tutorial on this.always wondered how Ryan from Counting Cars always did it.lol.the old Schlitz beer sign on the wall.
Wow.. Artwork is nice! Would be nice if you done this service for hire! I have a question. I just bought a 90+ year old shell cordovan razor strop, the top and the bottom had a debossed/recessed stamp and it was filled with all the original gold leaf. Unfortunately the strop was nasty and needed a deep clean, and I lost the gold leaf. My question is how durable would this be on a flexible piece of leather, if it were properly sealed? Thanks, Mike
Michael Shults I've never done that , but if you do it on the razor strop it should be fine . It does not flex that much like a leather jacket . Always try it on a sample piece first. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
I once had to do a mural on the inside of a dome. It was 35' wide and the corresponding height and depth. Four figures and a main figure. The only way to do it was with a projector. I mounted the projector on a flat surface connected to a ball joint on a solid photographers tripod for complete control while I traced it down. It seems to me this would be useful for complex lettering or patterns on surfaces that have two or more curves.
I’m not sure of a kit. Just get lettering quills no.‘s 2 ,4 , 6 , 8 , 10. That should cover most lettering jobs. I like the grey quills. They have more snap. The brown quills are softer , like for glass .get a couple of them. See if you like them. They have synthetic and real hair. I use real. Most brands are good. Langnickle, Luco , Mack, French Master. Grumbacher. Have fun. Thanks for watching
