Demonstration of tile grouting technique using correct technique, with tips for best practices. Grouting may seem scary, but it doesn't need to be. Forget the long, involved process they probably told you about at the home center. I've been doing it this way for two decades and the results are perfect.

The idea of leaving the grout to set up for 15 minutes is appropriate for very thin grout lines with unsanded grout. In that case, wiping immediately is likely just to pull the grout right back out. Even so, you can wipe more quickly than 15 minutes if you are skilled and careful about it. Today, most people are installing wider grout lines with sanded grout, and waiting for set up just isn't necessary. Just make sure you pack the joints well before wiping.

That's me. I am wiping the grout pretty much after I install it. I also use two buckets of water; one sponge for the heavy stuff and one to clean up afterwards that leaves pretty much no dry residue. Ironically. now 8 years later very thin grout lines (1/16") are the in thing. I actually like the thin grout lines.

Does it make a difference with non-sanded grout? 1/8 inch thick?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm Год назад
@lance Sanded grout will tend to stay put because the sand offers some structural support. Unsanded grout may come out a little easier, but the same technique applies. If you have 1/8" grout lines you should be using sanded grout anyway. That's the dividing line between sanded and unsanded, and you'll have better durability long term if you use sanded.

Oh let me add, this was the first time laying tile. It was time consuming, but I saved myself over 3500 doing this job myself. It's not a hard job, it's intimidating at first, but after you have all you measurements and layout, with the right tools and saws. Easy peezy.
@NoahHornberger
@NoahHornberger 6 лет назад
I agree, layed down the tile, now about to do the grout. My mistake was trying to avoid getting a real tile saw. My tiles would fit, except for 1 or 2 areas that would need a corner cut taken out. So I payed the $44 for a cheap tile cutter and it worked perfect. Everything went down easy after the grid was laid out. Seemed scary at first but was surprisingly easy. So get the cutter and do it right, it will look great. No need to hire it done if you can measure and have a t-square!!

Good question. When I'm using a 5 gallon pail I usually add a little water to the bottom first, just to avoid the grout powder sticking to the bottom. Then I add the grout and then gradually add water in as I mix with a drill powered auger. I turn the bucket over as I mix with the auger so I don't get dry pockets.

I don't normally feel compelled to comment on videos but I must say THANK YOU for this! I did about 100 square feet of 13" x 13" tile with 3/16" joints in about 90 minutes last night, using your method. I am using a sanded grout by Custom and there was a little bit of haze that came back (probably from not refreshing the water often enough) but I came back a couple hours later and it wiped up super easily. After hearing horror stories about how tough it can be to get rid of the residue, I was glad I saw your video and did it the easy way instead of the package instructions. I must say, I rather hated the process of tiling, but I actually enjoyed grouting. Thanks!

I wish there were a way for us viewers to reward the truly great videos. I don't mean the ones with the best production values, or the best 3-step process for whatever, or the ones done by the jack-of-all-trade guys who put on a good show, but are mostly faking their way through, or the ones by the handsome remodeling guys who show you just enough to make you fail and have to call them. I'm talking about guys who have spent decades doing the work in obscurity, who know the job in depth and take time to share the benefit of their many years. Those videos are rare and often require you to suffer through a lot of other videos with higher view counts first. This is one of the videos I'd like to reward. Thank you!

When you have very thin grout lines you may need to wait between wiping because otherwise the grout will pull out of the joint when you wipe. For most sanded grout lines today, though, my technique should work fine.
@ericjimenez4360
@ericjimenez4360 10 лет назад
Hi. Some of the other videos on grouting I've watched insist that after the initial pass with the float only, the grout should be allowed to dry for 15 to 20 mins before using the damp sponge technique. In you video you skip this step. Is there a difference?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 10 лет назад
You are referring to the old school method that for some reason persists today even when it is not necessary. The chemical formulations of grout have changed, so maybe many decades ago it was necessary to let the grout "set up" but today it is not. As long as you follow my advice closely you will be fine. Don't make the grout mix too wet, make sure you really pack the joints tight with grout, and make sure you wring out the sponge very well before wiping with a turning motion shown in the video. The next morning you may have a slight haze almost like talcum powder on the tile that can be wiped off with a damp paper towel. That's it.

May have to do with the mixing ratio. Wetter the grout, easier to fill but needs to dry so that it doesn't just wipe right out. Just a little difference in moisture will determine ease of use and best technique.
@svborek

Eric Jimenez as long as you don't wash out the joints you will be fine. Letting it dry that long means by the end the last tiles you are scrubbing to get the dried off of them

Hello! Great video! I've been disappointed with my grouting results, and this technique looks like it will fix my issues (mainly removing the color - using too much water). I'm about to grout a larger format tile back splash (4x16) with 1/16 spacing using un-sanded grout. Does the same technique apply, and / or do you have any additional tips for such an installation?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 9 лет назад
JPC437 The same technique will also work on narrow joints. Unsanded grout seems to dry more quickly than sanded, so don't get too far ahead of yourself. Be certain you've really packed the narrow space with grout. With narrow grout lines it may be more important to use the rubber float to pull away the excess. Relying too much on a sponge may lead to excess water and you may pull out too much of the grout. Pull the excess away with the float using a diagonal cutting action, then reach for the damp but not wet sponge.
@jpc4378
@jpc4378 9 лет назад
enduringcharm Got it. The manufacturer (Flextile, Premium Polymer Modified) specification is for 20-30 minutes set time before wiping (post float). Do you recommended wiping right away, or should I wait? To your point, my concern with waiting is that the stuff may dry quick. In one instance, I waited to long and ended up with uneven joints that I couldn't correct no matter how much I buffed them. On the flip side, in another instance, I wiped too aggressively, and the color washed out of the grout. Your technique would have helped me in this later instance. Looking for that middle ground! Any further comments welcome and appreciated!
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 9 лет назад
JPC437 Well, for narrow grout lines in the 1/16" range I typically do small sections (maybe 2x2 feet) at a time. Grout lines of that size are usually found in showers or kitchen backsplashes, so smaller sections at a time work well. I work in the grout aggressively with a hard rubber float, then "cut" the excess away. I never timed myself, but I'm sure it isn't more than a few minutes before I'm wiping with the sponge--a damp, not wet sponge! It's important not to mix the grout too wet either--aim a little more for peanut butter than for mayonnaise. All of this is subject to the project conditions, though. If I'm working in a dry winter heated bath I work a little faster. If the homeowner doesn't have AC and it's a sweltering August, I can slow down. Use your eyes and hands to judge, not your watch. As for the color washing away, I've never experienced that condition. All I can guess is that either you mixed the grout for too little time (use a drill and auger) or that you just had too much water in the sponge. Make certain you have a sponge designed for grouting and wring the life out of it each dip in the bucket!

One question, for a small bathroom floor project (25 sq. ft.) would having just one bucket of fresh water for sponge rinsing be enough? Thanks for the video!
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 11 лет назад
The sand in grout is there for strength in wider grout lines. 1/8" inch lines are probably right around the borderline between sanded or unsanded grout so I would go by the grout manufacturer's recommendation.
@JohnDoe-jq3qf

So why so much emphasis on spinning the sponge during the wiping operation?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 6 лет назад
By turning the sponge you are exposing clean sponge surface as you go, which results in a clean tile surface too. If you didn't turn the sponge you'd just be spreading the grout rather than removing it. Try it both ways and it will be evident.

Goddamn it. I started grouting using a tube of grout and a caulking gun, but everything about that was slow and tedious and messy. After the first tube, I realized that could NOT be how the professionals did it - it was just too much a PITA. Wish I'd watched this first.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 8 лет назад
The premixed "grout" in a plastic jar or tube really isn't grout. It's more of a watered down caulk, I guess, and pros don't use it at all.
@pyrotheevilplatypus
@pyrotheevilplatypus 8 лет назад
enduringcharm I switched to the type of grout you're using in the video, but the grout in the bucket keeps turning to Rick before I can finish - wasting about half of it. How often should I be adding water and re-mixing?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 8 лет назад
If you are using a powdered grout (like Tec or Polygrout brands) and thoroughly mixing it with water to a peanut butter to mayonnaise consistency it should last long enough in the bucket to do a floor or a shower. Are you mixing it too dry? Are you using plain water with no additives? Are you using a powered mixer? I usually mix up half a 25 pound bag at first and mix a little more if I need it. If the mix stiffens up you can add a little more water to "freshen" it up. It typically takes me around an hour to complete grouting a 60x30 shower and another hour or less to grout the floor. Are you taking excessively long with your grouting?
@pyrotheevilplatypus
@pyrotheevilplatypus 7 лет назад
It's kinda a playdoh-y consistency and I'm working on a room that's 20'x14'. And I'm not exactly speedy Gonzalez (probably because I was mixing too dry - I followed the directions on the bag). I'll try mayonnaise consistency tomorrow (third time's the charm?). Also does the rubbery/silicone grout (the type you use IN a shower, as opposed to floor grout) have a special name?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 7 лет назад
I'm assuming you are using a sanded grout? Try mixing a little bit wetter and recognize that five minutes after you stop mixing the grout will "set up" and become a little stiffer. If you mix ever so slightly on the wet side then it should be perfect by the time you get the bucket to the tile an start grouting. Make a habit of giving the grout a little stir in the bucket each time you reach in with the float. Sometimes the grout appears to be hardening but really it's just settling in the bucket and keeping it stirred up will prevent that. For caulk, you can get color matched silicone caulk (which is not paintable, by the way) or you can get a sanded silicone caulk to match the grout. The sanded grout has some texture but it doesn't generally last as long as plain silicone caulk.

Hi, I am wondering if the reason why, when using this technique, you're able to avoid the 10ish minutes-wait between grout application and wiping that others recommend is that your sponge is so dry? I like the idea of working in such small sections and then cleaning immediately -- makes so much more sense to me. Is there no risk in wiping down so soon? Thanks for an awesome video!

you must get paid by the hour if you do a few tiles at the time...Depending on the kind of tile you can do from 10-20-30 sqm before washing it with sponge
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 7 лет назад
This video was made for amateurs who are new the process, so I think small sections are wiser. When I work I grout the area that I can reach from my knees, then move the buckets to the next section. Depending on the shape of the room that area may be smaller or larger. In a typical bath with shower or tub/shower and floor the grouting takes two or two and a half hours, including clean up. For a larger or more complicated bath it may take a half day. The beauty of my system is that I never get up and go back on a previous section to clean up haze, etc. Once a section is done, it's done.

I used your technique yesterday, did everything you outlined in your video. Grout is still drying and looking actually pretty darn good. My grout was actually on the dryer side and was not real sure about its effectiveness. I tested a small area for strength, grouting was done about 12 hrs ago.....I would have to say, holding up great at this point. First time ever tackling tile flooring, thanks for the video and as far as I;m concern....Excellent advice. Thanks!!!!

Thank you SOOO much for your really easy and quick overview. I just needed something to make me feel a little more confident before diving into it. its been a long time since i've done it, but this time on my own. I literally just now finished grouting the floor in my soon to be gaming room ^_^ im not used to that much of a workout tho so i know my body's going to be hurtin tomorrow!

Yeah, tile work in general can be a workout. Every time I load up my truck with a pallet of tile for a bath or a kitchen I have to take a deep breath, knowing what's ahead for me!

As long as you are working the grout deep into the grout line and wiping diagonally so that the grout isn't pulled out of the grout line then you will be fine. For very thin grout lines using non-sanded grout you may find that waiting a bit makes the process easier, but most people today are not using that style of grout line. I've been doing it this way for at least a decade and I've had no issues personally or professionally. Other contractors I know who do tile use the same methods.

Good vid. I prefer the grout more on the wet side so it's easier to spread out. I also will smooth grout lines with the sponge then go back and wipe up the residue. After it dries for a day I'll go back over it with a vinegar and water mixture to remove any film left over. Then a good sealer a couple days later.

+Geoffrey Mazalin Acidity to clean the residue. Works pretty good if you did the sponge portion right and got it mostly clean.

Thanks so much for your channel! You are so thorough. I am currently taking down my 1920's shower walls. I am about to remove all of the thin wood slabs. Your video is only for shower surround, and I am wondering if you have any tips for me to try to incorporate the plastic you used for a set-in tub? I have to tile the front of the tub as well.. since I can't put plastic under it, any suggestions? :) thanks in advance!

After applying the grout should you wait 10 to 20 minutes before wiping it with water?
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 8 лет назад
No, that is not necessary. If you read through some of the comments there have been similar discussions. That was the traditional way of doing it but it doesn't buy you anything and with today's grout formulations you may even set yourself up for big trouble trying to remove grout that has already set up. Just do as I say in the video and you'll be in good shape.

This methods works perfectly! I have grouted many floors, and the traditional method, or following the instructions on the grout package, always results in my feet (toes) messing up the grout behind me as I sponge 15-30 minutes after applying. Who knew grouting could so simple? Thanks

I agree with the rest of those commenting here 'great video' wish I had found your videos before i started my tile job :( . I rented a manual saw at local big builder store, watched their videos online and told the rental person that I had 'no' experience doing tile his offer to help was 'let me know it turns out?' , yeah thanks. So 2 boxes of busted tiles and a video I had to dig for from a total other site saved me 'dont push the tile in the middle' it might cause it to bust !??. Any way thank you so much but now I have to grout my back breaking labor and my father in law bought the supplies before he left town 'because he knows all about laying tile' and he bought the stuff no pro would use :( the stuff in the plastic bucket :( wish me luck , on the other hand if it goes south Ill defiantly be bringing everyone to watch this video and READ the comments :) ,,,,,,, here goes nothin :(

Dude! Excellent primer. I did a bathroom a couple years ago, and used University of RU-vid then too. The advice was to let the grout set up, and it was a Royal PITA to get it off. I almost broke out the sander. Yours is a way better technique. I'm so glad I checked again before my current project. Thanks so much for the help.

This is a great video, and grout is the devil without the right help and advice. Everything necessary for grout work is included in this clip, but it's the clean up that can be intimidating. It'll take me around 7 swipes even with the right sponge and bucket, but that was because I was dragging it off the wall connection and smearing it. I was thinking I would see it on the sponge, and it doesn't always show up. Thanks for this clip.
@southeastwisconsinkayakfis8526
I used this technique with tec accucolor grout and it looked great at first but after it cured there was white residue on grout joints. I mixed grout very dry and used distilled water in the mix. How do I get rid of the white stuff coming out of the grout? I mixed it with a drill and let it sit for 10 minutes then mixed it again.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 9 лет назад
Tony Caduto You don't say what color the grout was, but I'll venture some potential things to think about. When you say the mix was "very dry" was it too dry? The water needs to be thoroughly mixed with the powder and if you went too dry it's possible the residue you are seeing is unmixed powder. The right consistency is difficult to judge from a video, I realize, but you want the grout to be something along the lines of peanut butter or mayonnaise. Of course, if you go too wet, you can get inconsistent color after curing too!Another question pertains to the thinset adhesive I assume you used for the tile. Is it possible that the residue you are seeing is either thinset that got mixed in with the grout (perhaps from reusing a bucket or paddle mixer) or from thinset that smooshed up in the joint and is showing through? Typically the thinset is either white or gray, so the color of the residue may be an indication.Once in a while I've come across old grout mix that has given me inconsistent mixing. Were you using fresh, unopened grout from a reputable retail store? Finally, if the residue doesn't come off and you have a real problem, don't despair. It's actually pretty easy to remove the grout (especially when it is new) and re-grout the problem area. I have a video to show you the process of removing the grout. Hopefully some of these thoughts will help you...
@southeastwisconsinkayakfis8526
Hi its a medium beige and the thin set was all scraped out really good. I did mix it to peanut butter consist ancy and I mixed it for over 5 minutes almost 10. It could just be the brand, I still have one more room to do so I may use something other than tec. The last room I did with this same color also had white residue and I ended up using grout dye of the same color which worked well.
@southeastwisconsinkayakfis8526
I will scub it with distilled water in the am and see it it washes off.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 9 лет назад
Tony Caduto Hm. I've used that brand before--it's a well known, reputable brand. If you had trouble before, though, was it the same bag? I have to say, I've never used distilled water. I don't know why that would be a problem, but I've never had an issue with chlorinated tap water or well water. The only other thing I can think of is that if you didn't wring out the sponge enough you could have been adding water as you wiped without realizing it. That could cause discoloration. I would suggest ditching the distilled water for the next time. I just don't see a need for it and I wonder if there was something in it that caused the issue. I do an average of maybe eight bathrooms a year with tile, and I always use tap or well water, whichever is available onsite.
@southeastwisconsinkayakfis8526
I did another room and the grout looks great except for the color it did the same thing and I wrung the sponge out really good. It all turned white when dry. This time instead of sealing I just used the tec grout colorant of the same color and now it looks great, the grout absorbed the colorant right in like a sponge.

im about to start my first floor grouting experience. 1/2" grout on Santillo Terracotta tiles.I just finished stripping and removing the grout after 30 plus years of use. Figure I will have at least 2 applications of sealer before I begin grouting. Nice simple viceo. Thanks
@ابراهيمالجبوري-خ7ق
This video is great simple accurate correct not overly complicated and I’ve got a lot of tile and this is generally how I do it although I’m not sure about the one swipe thing is he is but not bad. Also I would recommend changing the water for your sponge pretty frequently it gets dirty and leaves behind more Haze if you don’t change out the water frequently
